I asked myself, “Where do I fit into this parable? Am I the priest? Am I the Levite? Am I the wounded man? Am I the Samari- tan?” Now, let me ask you, “Where do you fit into this parable?” That’s a tough question isn’t it! Let me tell you where I fit: *Sometimes, I’m the priest, afraid to get my hands dirty. *Sometimes, I’m the Levite, afraid someone’s going to take advan- tage of me. *Sometimes, I’m the wounded man --- needing help and not knowing where to turn. *And sometimes, I’m the Samaritan --- going way out of my way to help. I suspect that you might be like that too --- a mixed bag --- sometimes good --- sometimes not so good --- and sometimes, like the wounded man, helpless even to help yourself, much less to help someone else. The next question is this, “What does this parable call us to do?” Does it require us to pick up every hitchhiker we see? Does it require us to stop every time we see someone with a flat tire? Does it require us to give a dollar to every indigent holding a sign that says, “Hungry! Will work!” I can’t answer those questions for you. I can only tell you what I per- sonally will TRY to do. I will try to mix a little common sense with my benevolence. I will try to avoid becoming the next mugging victim. But I will also try NOT to run so scared that I never help. I don’t think this parable requires me to stop and help everyone who appears to need help. But I do think it calls me to keep my heart soft --- to avoid letting my heart crust over so that I never feel the other person’s pain. Jesus calls me to care, and Jesus calls me to act. I don’t suppose I’ll ever do either one perfectly --- caring or acting --- but the more I have Jesus in my heart, the better I’ll live the Jesus-life. That’s true for you too. The more you have Jesus in your heart, the better you will live the Jesus-life. Faithfully, Jim A Message from our Pastor

Recently, as I was driving along the streets of Memphis observing all the hurt and heartache, I began to reflect on the parable of the Good Samaritan. I asked myself, “Where do I fit into this parable? Am I the priest? Am I the Levite? Am I the wounded man? Am I the Samari-tan?” Now, let me ask you, “Where do you fit into this parable?”That’s a tough question isn’t it! Let me tell you where I fit: *Sometimes, I’m the priest, afraid to get my hands dirty. *Sometimes, I’m the Levite, afraid someone’s going to take advan-tage of me.

Will work!”I can’t answer those questions for you. I can only tell you what I per-sonally will TRY to do. I will try to mix a little common sense with my benevolence. I will try to avoid becoming the next mugging victim. But I do think it calls me to keep my heart soft --- to avoid letting my heart crust over so that I never feel the other person’s pain. Jesus calls me to care, and Jesus calls me to act. I don’t suppose I’ll ever do either one perfectly --- caring or acting --- but the more I have Jesus in my heart, the better I’ll live the Jesus-life.That’s true for you too. BIBLE STUDY 6:15 PMSt. Luke’s Lounge

The Word of God for the People of God

Led by Bettye Jo Masters in September“How can I read God’s words in ways that better guide my walk and talk?” This study

will look at ways to study the Bible and learn some practical techniques to help those words stick in our every day life.

Bring your Bible!

Thanks Be to God!

In October, Sue Whitt will continue the study. Each Sunday morning after Harry reads the scripture, he says, “The word of God for the people of God,” and we respond, “Thanks be to God.” But, sometimes we are more

sincere in our thanks than at others. In the October Bible Study on Wednesday evenings, Sue Whitt will be leading a discus-sion about what to do with those scriptures that we find hard to accept. Readings will be from 1 Timothy, 1 Corinthians, and Romans.

SCOUT NEWSCub Scout Pack 40 had a couple of great recruiting events at some of the local schools and our Pack has grown to 54 scouts! We have scouts from the following Elementary Schools: Campus, Brewster, Grahamwood, Idlewild, Richland, Sea Isle, Shady Grove, Sherwood, White Station and Willow Oaks. Cub Scout Pack 40 attended Scout Day at the University of Memphis Tigers Football Game on Saturday Septem-ber 17th. We had 16 scouts and 32 family members in attendance at the game. We had the opportunity to go on the field and take a pre-game picture with all the scouts in attendance. Pack 40 had the privilege of being picked to present the colors with the ROTC. Our 8 returning scouts got to present the colors with ROTC and the remaining 8 scouts got to walk on the field behind the University of Memphis Tigers Cheerleaders and Tom the Tiger III (the real tiger mascot). What a wonderful experience to be on the field when the players walked on the field and see all the fireworks.Cub Scout Pack 40 is selling popcorn as a fund raiser this fall. Our goal is to sell $10,000 of popcorn so we can con-tinue to have such wonderful experiences for all our scouts this year. Please let us know if you would like to help support the Cub Scout Pack by phone at 901-230-9174 or email at [email protected].

This Sunday, September 25th, we will come together for one worship service at 10:50am with the aid of strings and pipes. Led by the St. Luke’s Chancel Choir, Wesley Bell Choir, Guitar Club, and String Orchestra, this worship service focuses on the praise and adoration of our heavenly Father through the transcendent gift of music. As mentioned in my last Epistle article, let’s work together to make this music season break records in attendance. This would be a perfect time to invite a friend or a neighbor to worship. St. Luke’s not only has a history of great music, but a current standard of quality in worship and music. October 23rd at Collierville UMC you will have the opportu-nity to hear several area Methodist choirs present anthems and come together as a whole and share a mass choir an-them. St. Luke’s Chancel Choir very much looks forward to participation in this event and hopes to see you there.

FALL RETREAT NOVEMBER 12 & 13

The St. Luke’s annual fall retreat continues to offer participants’ choices.

Choose one day or choose to stay over. Nelson Woods, a 45 minute drive just outside Millington Tn., is

again hosting the retreat, set in a quiet, private wooded loca-tion with a lake view. The Saturday only attendees or so called “daytimers” may ride the church bus departing St. Luke’s parking lot at 8:30 am and returning after dinner. Sign up at the Hospitality desk if you are riding the church bus. Maps will be available with the registra-tion brochure, (coming soon) for those who choose to drive. The program begins at 9am followed by lunch at noon. Rev-erend Dennis Neenan will focus on care giving, who they are and how to prepare to grow through the experience. The fol-lowing breakout sessions allows you to choose sessions that “speaks to you”. After lunch, different afternoon activities are also planned from learning water coloring, handicraft exploring, outside games and a labyrinth meditation experience as well as free time to just hang out and visit. An unforgettable traditional cast iron cooked dinner, for all, ends the “day timers” official day. The church bus leaves immediately after dinner. If you have your own transportation you may choose to stay awhile longer, please do. Folk who stay late or who sleep over, may choose to enjoy a log fire, roast marshmallows, sing and tell stories, and visit with old and new friends. Different board games are available, along with the historical endless bag of popcorn and a kids’ movie. The evening is traditionally pretty laid back. Sunday morning begins with a late breakfast allowing people time to pack and help clean up followed by a closing commu-nion service. We are packed and gone by noon. The accom-modations are modern and the sleeping rooms provide three single beds per room. Troop 40’s Scouts will also be there camping out and working on merit badges, as well. The retreat is focused as an intergenerational event.Come to relearn or learn approaches to calmness and readi-ness. Come for the rare opportunity to enrich already exist-ing relationships and/or build new relationships. Come to an environment that supports our continued effort to hear and respond to God’s love. Come!

On September 8, Highland Area Renewal Corporation, Inc. (HARC) held its seventh annual HARCAngel Awards (for Community Service) Banquet right here in St. Luke’s

Christian Life Center. Close to three hundred people were in attendance, with keynote speaker Dr. Rosalyn (Roz) Nichols. Meteorologist Ron Childers was the emcee for the evening, and entertainment was provided by Wings Gymnastic cheer-leaders and the Sherwood Elementary School Chorus. Dr. Victor Feisal was honored at the banquet with a new award given in his name. This award, given for linking The University of Memphis with the Community, is named for Vic, who served for many years as U of M’s Vice-president. Ce-cile Humphreys, Jr. received the 2016 honor. We are also happy to inform you that one of the HARCAngel recipients was St. Luke’s very own Music Director S.C. Toe, who combines worship leadership and higher education at the U of M. Samson is also conductor of the Memphis Youth Symphony. Congratulations and thank you for your service. HARC, is a 501(c)3 charitable non-profit organization char-tered in the State of Tennessee in 2007. Our mission is to enhance the quality of life in the neighborhoods along High-land Street in Memphis. We are especially active in urban gardening, and we donate produce to St. Luke’s food pantry and others in the area. We also work closely with University of Memphis, especially through the University Neighborhoods Development Corporation (UNDC), for which HARC serves as the “Livability” sub-committee.

Dr. Vic Feisal and S.C. Toe honored at HARC Banquet.

FORWARD IN FAITHSunday, Oct. 2, at noon following worship we will gather as a church family for a Round Table Discussion. This is an opportunity for YOU to participate in how you see and believe that St. Luke’s can move Forward in Faith. Following the announcement of our new Director of Community Connections we will share a light lunch and be guided in questions that can help us ALL find a place in the community that can build St. Luke’s into a church that makes disciples for the transformation of our community and the world.
