There’s a fledgling, non-landed na- turist group in Anchorage, Alaska called the Anchorage Naturist Meetup Group (ANMG). I started this group on the Meetup.com site in March 2010 in order for fellow Alaskan naturists to meet and socialize. As written in the group’s sum- mary, “From summertime sunning and hiking, to wintertime sauna sweating and hot-tubbing, some activities are sim- ply more comfortable in the buff. This is intended as a low-key, non-sexual social group for naturist-minded Alaskans.” The Anchorage Naturist Meetup Group is not the first such group at- tempted in the Last Frontier. Before or- ganizing the Anchorage Naturists, I met some Alaskans through Nudist Friends— though not without heavy screening of those looking for hook-ups rather than meet-ups—and then through a group on Tribe.net that had many members but no activity. There is also a small retreat in Wasilla two hours from Anchorage that is quietly trying to restart, hoping to use ANMG members as a base. Addi- tionally, a new bed and breakfast called Whispering Winds is now in the works in the quirky fisherman/artist community of Homer, Alaska. Closeness to nature is a big draw in Alaska, so it makes sense that the state would have some naturist history. Starting a naturist group in Alaska has its challenges, yet we’ve started anyway. When taking into account the weather and the unforgiving wilderness, the prime day and location for being na- ked isn’t always there. We are up against short summers with fickle weather, mos- quitoes, territorial bears and moose, and spiky and burn-inducing plants that are as big as and more prevalent than the bears and moose. So, I have found that when there is a sunny, 70-degree day— or a number of them in a row!—I want to live it fully and in my birthday suit. Another issue is that Alaskans who may be naturist-minded aren’t necessar- ily going to search for a group, or label themselves “naturist.” They just do in nature what feels right at the time. Also, some of us have positions in society that make it awkward to be overly public about our naturism. I’ve recently privatized our groupaccessshortlyafterournewAnchoragegroup generated some Internet buzz.AcolumnistfortheAnchorageDailyNewsstumbleduponusonMeetup,sawastorytoberesearched,andwroteanunexpect-ed,humorousarticle(“Hey,nudehikers,whataboutthebugs?”AnchorageDailyNews,May19,2010).Itwasablessingin away, sincewe got somemembersfromit.Yet,youneverknowifsomeoneis agun-toting, right-wing,SarahPalinconservative or a live-and-let-liveGird-wood granola cruncher who’d been na-kedinamountaintarnjustyesterday. Another concern is that managinga social group through Meetup is notfree. There isapriceof$15permonthfortheorganizer,yetmembershiptopar-ticipantsisfreeonthesite.TheANMGwill need to consider how to raise andallocate funds while keeping membersinterestedinbeinginvolved. We’ve gone on several hikes, helped theWasilla retreat get cleaned

up by removing some shards of glassfrom the sunning area, skinny-dipped,and enjoyed a beach picnic. With theexception of the picnic, activities sofar have drawn 2-3 people each time.Meetupshavebeenduringweekdaystoavoidthepublic,yetdaytimehoursarealsowhenmanymembersareworking.More evening and weekend activitiesareneeded. The afternoon “beach” picnic at-tracted nine of us, breaking any re-cordoftheTribegroup.Iusetheword“beach”looselyasswimminginthedan-geroustidalmudflatsalongCookInletis not an option, only sunning on therockysoil.Next touswasabarrierofboulders that reached out to thewaterathightide, convenientlyblockingoursectionofbeachfromcasualfoottraffic.Only a late arrival climbedover thoserocks to find us.Thiswas amost pre-ciousday. FutureANMGactivitiesincludein-homemovie nights and hot tub parties.
