Fitness Center Celebrates the TOTALLY AWESOME Grand Opening.Since its opening in May 1986, the Indiana University Health Ball Memorial Fitness Center has provided many employees with a quiet place to work out, receive !tness instruction or even get a massage. One thing remained constant: all classes and workout facilities were housed in the lower level of Maria Bingham Hall, where tight spaces and low lighting created a bunker-like environment for improving one’s physical !tness - until now!

Times have changed.

On Monday, May 21, an all-new and improved Indiana Uni-versity Health Ball Memorial Fitness Center opened its doors in the lower level of the South Tower, near Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation. The new facility features an enlarged workout space, with tall windows full of natural light, additional treadmills, elliptical trainers, ARC trainers, new LifeFitness strength ma-chines, free weights, plus all new shower and vanity areas in the locker rooms. Shower facilities for men and women have doubled in comparison to the old facility.

“The brand new space is located in a modern area of the hospital and o!ers an inviting place for a workout,” said Paula Tyler, service line leader, Orthopedics, IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital.

“Our new Fitness Center is a very welcoming place for our employees and their family members, and serves as a great enticement to improve their physical "tness,” Tyler said. “We also want to give due credit to our administration for making this endeavor a priority as part of our corporate wellness ini-tiatives like Living Well-Works! The timing of our grand open-ing also aligns nicely with the system-wide Employee Weight Loss Challenge, so getting "t is fresh in everyone’s mind.”

The new IU Health Ball Memorial Fitness Center features badge-entry access that is available to members 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Only those with an IU Health Ball Memorial or Blackford Hospital employee badge or family membership badge can obtain access to the workout areas.

Use of the on-site Fitness Center membership is an often-over-looked employee bene"t. Fitness Center sta! expects to see an increase in usage with the new location and equipment.

“Our single and family memberships represent a tremendous bargain for employees compared to a traditional gym membership,” said Sara Lynn, "tness coordinator, IU Health Ball Memorial Fitness Center. “Employees can purchase a single membership for as little as $10 per month, and their spouse, domestic partners or dependents can enjoy a family membership for as little as $16 per month.”Both Fitness Center members and non-members can also take advantage of a number of longtime "tness classes,

including step aerobics, toning, sculpting, spin, Zumba and Piloxing. These classes are o!ered at an additional fee but are discounted for Fitness Center members. Beginning in June, the IU Health Ball Memorial Fitness Center will o!er spin classes in the old Cardio room in Maria Bingham Hall. Massage therapy will continue to be o!ered in its Maria Bingham o#ce as well.

In April, the IU Health Ball Memorial Fitness Center began o!er-ing a new program: Personal Training.

Personal Training is an individualized exercise program teach-ing proper exercise techniques with an emphasis on each client’s personal goals. Ryan Ledman, ACSM-CPT, is an expe-rienced personal trainer who has worked with teenage to older adult clients to achieve a variety of goals, including weight loss, gaining strength, event training and more.

Hospital Appoints New Security Director.

Employees Invited to Provide Brand New Café with Unique Name.

Beginning later this summer, a newly remodeled and improved Indiana University Health Ball Memorial Hospital Cafeteria will be satisfying the tastes of patients, visitors and employees alike.

IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital employees will have the chance in June to assure that the all-new café re!ects their tastes in naming as well. In an e"ort to generate excitement over the Grand Open-ing of the new café, Dietetics has announced a contest among hospital employees to name the facil-ity. Several other IU Health hospital cafeterias have names which re!ect the culture, history or even local lore, such as IU Health Bloomington Hospital’s “Breakaway Café,” IU Health North Hospital’s “The Atrio” and IU Health Methodist Hospital’s “Beacon.”

“With our cafeteria and food-service areas up for remodeling for the #rst time in many years, we felt a naming contest provided an exciting opportunity for all employees to get involved and take pride in an all-new facility that we hope will exceed the expectations of our patients, employees and visitors,” said Christy Tunnell, director, Support Services, IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital.

A grand prize for the winning entry is being determined, as well as participatory incentives. IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital employees may submit nominations as often as they wish to [email protected] from Friday, June 1 through Saturday, June 30. Nominations will be reviewed by a naming committee and selected prior to the new café’s opening in late July or early August.

Get your catchy name submissions ready, and watch The Express and Pulse for remodeling and construction updates as the Grand Re-Opening draws closer.

Indiana University Health Ball Memorial Hospital hasannounced Cli" Sessoms as its new security director. Sessoms retired from a distinguished 25-year career with the Marion Police Department, most recently serving as the Deputy Chief of Police from 2004-2012. He will begin his new duties on Monday, June 4.

“We are pleased to announce the appointment of Cli" Sessoms as our new security director,” said Michelle Altobella, vice president and general legal counsel, IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital. “Mr. Sessoms has developed a reputation as a creative problem solver with experience in personnel and budgetary matters. He brings us a charismatic attitude to help transform our security operations at both IU Health Ball Memo-rial and Blackford hospitals.”

As security director, Sessoms will also oversee security at o"-site IU Health Ball Memorial facilities in addition to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital and IU Health Blackford Hospital.

“Moving to IU Health Ball Memorial will bring an opportunity to proactively focus on risk management and ensure that our hospitals, as well as our outlying facilities and physicians’ o$ces, are patient-focused and prepared for emergency situa-tions as opposed to simply enforcing laws and investigating crimes,” Sessoms said. “It represents an exciting change at this point in my career.”

Sessoms holds a Master’s Degree in Public Management, as well as a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Information Systems from Indiana University-Kokomo. He is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Va. Sessoms has been recognized as a two-time Crime Stoppers O$cer of the Year, a recipient of a Meritorious Service Award from the Marion Police Department, and received the 2006 Angel Award for his recovery e"orts following Hurricane Katrina from Slidell, La.
