the Fall Online Auction Is Almost Here!
Charlie is a one-year-old pug/bulldog mix filled with energy and spunk. He is a fun little guy who loves to play with the other foster dogs in his house and get into the kind of mischief expected of a puppy.
Charlie would be best with an experienced adopter proficient in positive training, who can help him with his anxiety when meeting new people, new dogs, and new situations. With slow and steady introductions Charlie is happy and friendly, but rushed greetings or unexpected situations cause him to be reactive. He does recover quickly with a confident handler to help him through these “scary” times.
His ideal home would have a fenced yard so he can play and run safely and be in a neighbourhood that isn’t too busy. His new family needs to be committed to exercising his busy little body and mind and to training him using only positive methods. This little guy will blossom in the right home! We are shying away from apartments and condos due to situations like elevators and unexpected activity that often frighten and spook Charlie.
Can you give Charlie the forever homes of his dreams?

WAgs And WIggles FOr Andrej!Thank you to Andrej Baca for taking some of the photos of our auction items. Andrej had not previously been involved with Speaking of Dogs Rescue, but he jumped right in when I went looking for someone to take a bit of the load off our regular auction photographer, the talented Chris Henkel.
Andrej has eight years of pro experience and has done photo shoots of all kinds. Instead of shooting in a studio, he travels to locations with his own backdrops, lighting, and props. You can see his work at www.concreteandglass.com.

Halloween and Thanksgiving are fun times of year, but they’re not without their hazards for pets.
Keep your dogs and cats inside on Halloween night, and keep candies and holiday foods out of your pets’ reach. Check out these other fall safety tips.
Montreal has passed its controversial pit bull ban, but the controversy likely isn’t over...
In response, the Montreal SPCA has launched a campaign for safer, kinder communities as well as a lawsuit to fight the new law.
In the run-up to Montreal’s vote on banning pit bulls, the Quebec Order of Veterinarians advised vets have
right to refuse to euthanize the dogs.
A study has shown that a way to a dog’s heart is actually through his heart, not his stomach!

I bet you’ve always thought that a way to dog’s heart is through their stomach, but here comes science to prove you wrong!
A recent study published in the journal Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience has shown that most dogs would choose a heartfelt ‘good boy’ or a gentle tummy rub to a tender morsel. Owners were directed to either praise their dog, or hand over a tasty treat, while the dog’s brain was being non-invasively scanned to see which caused more neural excitement. 87% of dogs tested showed an equal or greater response in their reward center to approval from their owner when compared to getting a snack.
A second test had the pups run through a maze. At the end of two different paths stood either the owner, or a waiting bowl of food. Surprised scientists watched on as once again most dogs chose to beeline to their owner rather than filling their bellies.
So, the next time someone tells you that your dog only loves you because you feed them, show them this article!

Furry FrIends 5k WAgs And WIggles!Thank you to everyone who supported Speaking of Dogs Rescue at the Furry Friends 5K. We don’t have the final total, but we know we raised over $5,000. Big thanks to Gael Ross, who collected the second-highest total of pledges (over $1,800) and won the grand prize of two round-trip tickets to anywhere West Jet flies!
Thank you to volunteers Paul, Jasmine (and Jasmine’s mom), Karina, Katie S., Linda K., Stacey, and Ian, who travelled to Burlington at what seemed like the crack of dawn. Thanks also to the walkers and to pledge collectors Trish F. and her husband, Gael, Steve, Katie C., Lorraine and Kim.
As an interesting side note, the world record for the fastest 5K with a dog was unofficially broken by Pro-Triathlete Jessey the Elf and his dog Hunter. Jessey and Hunter crossed the mats at blistering time of 16:54!
