Headteacher Update
Over the last couple of weeks of term, there have
been lots of memory making moments, with visits
from Father Christmas, Christmas parties, Secret
Santa Day, Christmas Fete and Christmas dinner!
Next week we are all very excited to perform the
Christmas shows to our families.
It has been a busy time for all of the parents who
have been involved in the organisation of events
with the BAC. We are so grateful for all you do
and the money raised makes a big difference to
the children’s education. The BAC are delighted
to announce the Christmas events have raised an
amazing £1709.35! The BAC would like to thank all
the parents and staff who have supported both
events. Just fantastic!
This term we will be saying goodbye to Mrs
Hobson in Year 4. Mrs Hobson came to Barnehurst
as a maternity cover and then stayed on when
the teacher she was covering decided not to
return to teaching. We would like to say thank
you to Mrs Hobson for all her hard work and
commitment to Barnehurst and wish her well. We
will be welcoming Mrs England, who is the new
permanent class teacher for Christopher Robin
class.
Finally, I would like to wish all of our wonderful
children and families a very happy Christmas and
a peaceful new year.
Best wishes,
Mrs Shields

Nursery
Reception
Reception children have been learning about
changes and exploring what happens when we get
old. The children have decided that they would like
to spend time singing at the local care home next
week as well as selling their Christmas decorations
at the Christmas show to raise money for Age
Concern.
Year 1
Year 1 are still busy at work putting together a
“Welcome to Barnehurst” video for any new
children and visitors. In preparation for this, the
children explored their local environment and went
on their own journey in a space dome.
Year 2
Year 2 have spent the term thinking about how to
make others happy by spreading joy. They started
off by conducting a survey within the local
community to find out how they could impact the
community. Since then, Year 2 have had numerous
opportunities to spread joy, such as singing in
community hotspots.
Children in Nursery have been exploring what
makes them special and unique and how it is
okay to be different. Children have discussed
diversity and celebrated how they are all
different. This was consolidated by the Story Teller,
John Kirk, who came in to tell stories from around
the world. They have explored different family
units and they have shared photos from home.
This term children have created a diversity tree
celebrating themselves in school and at home.

Year 3
Year 3 started off the term discussing issues such as
poverty and hunger. They looked at the provision for
the poor in the past as well as identifying some of
the poorest countries in the world. This led to an
assembly promoting the Harvest Drive and
electronic adverts being made. Year 3 set a target
of 1000 items to donate between two different
foodbanks and were please to say they smashed it
with over 1300 items. The children saw the impact of
their hard work after the two deliveries were made
and a group of volunteers had to come and collect
the remaining items.

Year 5
This term, Year 5’s topic has been ‘People and
Power,’ as part of our Global Citizenship curriculum.
They have been learning about democracy and the
project has been creating a Pen Parliament. This is
giving the children the experience of being a law
maker such as a politician. Year 5 determined a
criteria, which children would need to demonstrate
to be awarded a pen licence. Year 5 led an
assembly to share this criteria and are now holding a
panel once a week to award licences if the criteria
has been met. In order to deliver a quality assembly
and learn to have the presence of a politician,
children had the opportunity to learn techniques
from a fantastic storyteller.
Congratulations to the children who have been
awarded their pen licences so far!
Year 6
Over the term, Year 6 have explored concepts of
mental well-being and emotional awareness
through two core texts – ‘A monster calls’ and
‘Holes’. Both stories focus on two individuals who
face incredible pressure in their daily life and how
they eventually overcome those battles. Given the
increase in global awareness of mental health, this
has been a vital topic to introduce the idea of
looking after our own minds. We would be
extremely grateful if parents continued these
conversations at home, especially regarding the
impact that social media has on mental well-being.
Year 4
Year 4 have jumped deep into their topic of ‘plastic
- fantastic or drastic?’ The children have learnt
about how rubbish has changed over time and the
impact it has on the environment. Children
consolidated this by having the Bexley SWAC team
in to talk about the impact it has on animals and
what we can do to help. Children have spent the
last few weeks planning and designing eco
friendship bracelets and skipping ropes from one use
plastics and have written information leaflets to
share what they have learnt.

Sporting Update
We've had a typically busy first term of sport at Barnehurst - both our year 5/6 boys and girls football teams
qualified for the Bexley ESFA football finals (only one other school in Bexley managed this) and have made
unbeaten starts in their league campaigns. The boys have also made it through to the quarter finals of the main
Bexley Cup. During this time an amazing 61 goals have been scored with only 15 conceded - a massive well done
to Jack M, Oliver, Jack A, Kian, Kelly, Max Tu, Charlie, Max To, Bradley, Sophie, Willow, Ellie, Freya, Georgia, Chloe,
Abigail and Grace. A separate congratulations should also be made to Abigail D who has earned a place in the
Bexley District girls football team - the 6th year in a row Barnehurst has representation at this level following the
previous exploits of Freya D, Tayan R, Ruby W, Mya B, Ronnee J and Teddy C.
Barnehurst also had a successful day at the Bexley hockey championship in October, with Team 2 winning the vast
majority of their matches to finish 8th out of 18 and team 1 finishing 2nd; their only defeat coming at the hands of
the winners Old Bexley. Brilliant effort from Oisin, Bobby, Connor H, Abigail, Sophie, Chloe, Connor A, Kyle, Kenzie,
Bethany and Alyssa.
Well done also to the year 5 and 6 girls that attended the Dartfordians Rugby Festival in November - some
fantastic team play and tries scored, with a lot of mud involved! Annie-Rose, Mia, Lyra, Freya, Grace, Florie, Alyssa,
Abigail, Teegan and Ellie were even given hot dogs and their own rugby balls to take home, so a great afternoon
all round!

Pupil Governors
Following the Barnehurst election on Wednesday, the children have elected their Pupil Governors for the
year. We used the Governor election to help children grasp a deeper understanding of the general
election with candidate speeches and ballot boxes!
Congratulations to the children who were elected. The Governing Body and I look forward to hearing
your thoughts and ideas!

Wellbeing Ambassadors
Year 4 and 5 all had an opportunity to apply for the role of Wellbeing Ambassador for Barnehurst. The
Wellbeing Ambassador will have a voice in leading and promoting Wellbeing throughout the school.
They will encourage others to talk openly about Positive Mental Health and how to manage our feelings.
This morning the Ambassadors received training for their role from Pascale Berthellet, Public Health
Advisor for Bexley. The children will be working closely with Mrs Evans and we look forward to seeing
how the role develops over the year.
