Morning Worship, New Zealand Prayer Book

The Preparation

When anyone is united to Christ, there is a new world; the old order has gone, and a new order has

already begun. (2 Corinthians 5:17)

Great is the Lord and worthy of all praise.

Amen! Praise and glory and wisdom,

thanksgiving and honour, power and might,

be to our God for ever and ever! Amen.

Hear these words of Scripture.

If we claim to be sinless, we are self-deceived and strangers to the truth.

If we confess our sins, God is just and may be trusted to forgive our sins and cleanse us from every

kind of wrong.

Spirit of God, search our hearts.

Let us, in silence, remember our need for God’s forgiveness.

Silence

Let us confess our sins to God.

God of mercy, we have sinned against you and against others.

We have sinned in what we have done, and in what we have failed to do.

We are truly sorry.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for our sins, forgive us all that is past

and raise us to newness of life. Amen.

Almighty God, who pardons all who truly repent, forgive your sins, strengthen you by the Holy

Spirit, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Redeemer.

Amen.

The Lesson

A Reading from Ezra.

Ezra 4:7, 11-24

And in the days of Artaxerxes, Bishlam and Mithredath and Tabeel and the rest of their

associates wrote to King Artaxerxes of Persia; the letter was written in Aramaic and translated.*

(This is a copy of the letter that they sent):

‘To King Artaxerxes: Your servants, the people of the province Beyond the River, send

greeting. And now may it be known to the king that the Jews who came up from you to us have gone

to Jerusalem. They are rebuilding that rebellious and wicked city; they are finishing the walls and

repairing the foundations. Now may it be known to the king that, if this city is rebuilt and the walls

finished, they will not pay tribute, custom, or toll, and the royal revenue will be reduced. Now

because we share the salt of the palace and it is not fitting for us to witness the king’s dishonour,

therefore we send and inform the king, so that a search may be made in the annals of your

ancestors. You will discover in the annals that this is a rebellious city, hurtful to kings and

provinces, and that sedition was stirred up in it from long ago. On that account this city was laid

waste. We make known to the king that, if this city is rebuilt and its walls finished, you will then

have no possession in the province Beyond the River.’

The king sent an answer: ‘To Rehum the royal deputy and Shimshai the scribe and the rest

of their associates who live in Samaria and in the rest of the province Beyond the River, greeting.

And now the letter that you sent to us has been read in translation before me. So I made a decree,

and someone searched and discovered that this city has risen against kings from long ago, and that

rebellion and sedition have been made in it. Jerusalem has had mighty kings who ruled over the

whole province Beyond the River, to whom tribute, custom, and toll were paid. Therefore issue an

order that these people be made to cease, and that this city be not rebuilt, until I make a decree.

Moreover, take care not to be slack in this matter; why should damage grow to the hurt of the king?’

Then when the copy of King Artaxerxes’ letter was read before Rehum and the scribe

Shimshai and their associates, they hurried to the Jews in Jerusalem and by force and power made

them cease. At that time the work on the house of God in Jerusalem stopped and was discontinued

until the second year of the reign of King Darius of Persia.

The Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven,

is seated at the right hand of the Father,

and will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Invocation

My brothers and sisters, our help is in the name of the eternal God,

Who is making the heavens and the earth.

Eternal Spirit, flow through our being and open our lips,

That our mouths may proclaim your praise.

Silence

Let us worship the God of love.

Alleluia. Alleluia.

Psalm 42

V As the deer longs for the water-brooks,

R so longs my soul for you, O God.

V My soul is athirst for God, athirst for the living God;

R when shall I come to appear before the presence of God?

V My tears have been my food day and night,

R while all day long they say to me, "Where now is your God?"

V I pour out my soul when I think on these things;

R how I went with the multitude and led them into the house of God,

V With the voice of praise and thanksgiving,

R among those who keep holy-day.

V Why are you so full of heaviness, O my soul?

R and why are you so disquieted within me?

Page 10: The Fiftieth Convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Idahos3.amazonaws.com › ... › documents › 3243329 › ...FINAL.pdf · 3 Worship Booklet Convention of the Diocese of Idaho

10

V Put your trust in God;

R for I will yet give thanks to him, who is the help of my countenance, and my God.

V My soul is heavy within me;

R therefore I will remember you from the land of Jordan, and from the peak of Mizar among the

heights of Hermon.

V One deep calls to another in the noise of your cataracts;

R all your rapids and floods have gone over me.

V The Lord grants his loving-kindness in the daytime;

R in the night season his song is with me, a prayer to the God of my life.

V I will say to the God of my strength, "Why have you forgotten me?

R and why do I go so heavily while the enemy oppresses me?"

V While my bones are being broken,

R my enemies mock me to my face;

V All day long they mock me

R and say to me, "Where now is your God?"

V Why are you so full of heaviness, O my soul?

R and why are you so disquieted within me?

V Put your trust in God;

R for I will yet give thanks to him, who is the help of my countenance, and my God.

Repeat “Pour out, I will pour out”

Collect for Midday

all the peoples of the earth may be drawn to your uplifted love; for your kingdom’s sake. Amen.

already begun. (2 Corinthians 5:17)

Great is the Lord and worthy of all praise.

Amen! Praise and glory and wisdom,

thanksgiving and honour, power and might,

Silence

Let us confess our sins to God.

Almighty and merciful God, we have sinned against you, in thought, word and deed. We have

not loved you with all our heart. We have not loved others as our Saviour Christ loves us. We

are truly sorry. In your mercy forgive what we have been, help us to amend what we are, and

direct what we shall be; that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, through

Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.

Reading

Matthew 12:33-44

‘Either make the tree good, and its fruit good; or make the tree bad, and its fruit bad; for the

tree is known by its fruit. You brood of vipers! How can you speak good things, when you are evil?

For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. The good person brings good things out of

a good treasure, and the evil person brings evil things out of an evil treasure. I tell you, on the day of

judgement you will have to give an account for every careless word you utter; for by your words

you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.’

Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to him, ‘Teacher, we wish to see a sign from

you.’ But he answered them, ‘An evil and adulterous generation asks for a sign, but no sign will be

given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For just as Jonah was for three days and three

nights in the belly of the sea monster, so for three days and three nights the Son of Man will be in

the heart of the earth. The people of Nineveh will rise up at the judgement with this generation and

condemn it, because they repented at the proclamation of Jonah, and see, something greater than

Jonah is here! The queen of the South will rise up at the judgement with this generation and

condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth to listen to the wisdom of Solomon, and

see, something greater than Solomon is here!

Hear what the Spirit is saying to the churches.

Thanks be to God.

The Song of Mary Magnificat

V My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Savior;

R for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

V From this day all generations will call me blessed:

R the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his Name.

Page 14: The Fiftieth Convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Idahos3.amazonaws.com › ... › documents › 3243329 › ...FINAL.pdf · 3 Worship Booklet Convention of the Diocese of Idaho

14

V He has mercy on those who fear him

R in every generation.

V He has shown the strength of his arm,

R he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

V He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,

R and has lifted up the lowly.

V He has filled the hungry with good things,

R and the rich he has sent away empty.

V He has come to the help of his servant Israel,

R for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

V The promise he made to our fathers,

R to Abraham and his children for ever.

V Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:

R as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Collect for Evening

Gracious God, you have given us much today; grant us also a thankful spirit. Into your hands we

commend ourselves and those we love. Be with us still, and when we take our rest renew us for the

service of your Son Jesus Christ. Amen.

In darkness and in light, in trouble and in joy, help us, heavenly Father, to trust your love, to

serve your purpose, and to praise your name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Lessons

A reading from Deuteronomy.

Deuteronomy 34-1-12

Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is

opposite Jericho, and the Lord showed him the whole land: Gilead as far as Dan, all Naphtali, the

land of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the Western Sea, the Negeb, and the

Plain—that is, the valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees—as far as Zoar. The Lord said to him,

“This is the land of which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, ‘I will give it to your

descendants’; I have let you see it with your eyes, but you shall not cross over there.” Then Moses,

the servant of the Lord, died there in the land of Moab, at the Lord’s command. He was buried in a

valley in the land of Moab, opposite Beth-peor, but no one knows his burial place to this day. Moses

was one hundred twenty years old when he died; his sight was unimpaired and his vigor had not

abated. The Israelites wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days; then the period of mourning

for Moses was ended.

Joshua son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, because Moses had laid his hands on him;

and the Israelites obeyed him, doing as the Lord had commanded Moses.

Never since has there arisen a prophet in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to

face. He was unequaled for all the signs and wonders that the Lord sent him to perform in the land

of Egypt, against Pharaoh and all his servants and his entire land, and for all the mighty deeds and

all the terrifying displays of power that Moses performed in the sight of all Israel.

Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Churches.

Thanks be to God.

A Reading from I Thessalonians.

I Thessalonians 2:1-8

You yourselves know, brothers and sisters, that our coming to you was not in vain, but

though we had already suffered and been shamefully mistreated at Philippi, as you know, we had

courage in our God to declare to you the gospel of God in spite of great opposition. For our appeal

does not spring from deceit or impure motives or trickery, but just as we have been approved by

God to be entrusted with the message of the gospel, even so we speak, not to please mortals, but to

please God who tests our hearts. As you know and as God is our witness, we never came with words

of flattery or with a pretext for greed; nor did we seek praise from mortals, whether from you or

from others, though we might have made demands as apostles of Christ. But we were gentle among

you, like a nurse tenderly caring for her own children. So deeply do we care for you that we are

determined to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you have

become very dear to us.

Hear what the Spirit is saying to the churches.

Thanks be to God.

Sequence Hymn

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew.

Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Matthew 22:34-46

When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together,

and one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. “Teacher, which commandment in the

law is the greatest?” He said to him, “’You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with

all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is

like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the law and

the prophets.”

Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them this question: “What do

you think of the Messiah? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “The son of David.” He said to them,

“How is it then that David by the Spirit calls him Lord, saying,

Page 23: The Fiftieth Convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Idahos3.amazonaws.com › ... › documents › 3243329 › ...FINAL.pdf · 3 Worship Booklet Convention of the Diocese of Idaho

23

‘The Lord said to my Lord,

“Sit at my right hand,

until I put your enemies under your feet”’?

If David thus calls him Lord, how can he be his son?” No one was able to give him an answer,

nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.

The Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The Sermon

The Most Rev. Michael Curry

The Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made,

of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven:

by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,

and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son.

With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.

He has spoken through the Prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayers of the People

Following each bidding:

Deacon: Jesus, Loving, Liberating and Life Giving,

Response: Give us eyes to see and a spirit to follow you.

Confession of Sin

We come seeking forgiveness for all we have failed to be and do as members of Christ’s body.

Page 24: The Fiftieth Convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Idahos3.amazonaws.com › ... › documents › 3243329 › ...FINAL.pdf · 3 Worship Booklet Convention of the Diocese of Idaho

24

Silence may be kept.

In God there is forgiveness.

Loving and all-seeing God, forgive us where we have failed to support one another and to be

what we claim to be. Forgive us where we have failed to serve you; and where our thoughts

and actions have been contrary to yours we ask your pardon.

The Bishop stands and says

God forgives us; be at peace.

The Peace

All stand.

The Holy Communion

Offertory

Offertory Anthem: If ye love me Philip Wilby

If ye love me, keep my commandments, and I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that

He may abide with you for ever; E’en the Spirit of Truth. And ye know Him, for He dwelleth with you, and shall be

in you. I will not leave you comfortless. I will come to you. (John 14)

Representatives of the congregation bring forward the people's offerings of bread and wine, and

money or other gifts. The people stand while the offerings are presented and placed on the Altar.

The Great Thanksgiving

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Then, facing the Holy Table, the Celebrant proceeds

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father

Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. For by water and the Holy Spirit you have made us a new

people in Jesus Christ our Lord, to show forth your glory in all the world. Therefore we praise you,

joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever

sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

Celebrant and People

The people stand.

Then the Celebrant continues

We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in

creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and

above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be

incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have

delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of

error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

Page 26: The Fiftieth Convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Idahos3.amazonaws.com › ... › documents › 3243329 › ...FINAL.pdf · 3 Worship Booklet Convention of the Diocese of Idaho

26

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks

to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given

for you. Do this for the remembrance of me."

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said,

"Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for

the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me."

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

Celebrant and People

We remember his death,

We proclaim his resurrection,

We await his coming in glory;

The Celebrant continues

And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from

your creation, this bread and this wine.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the

Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his

sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness

of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where,

withall your

saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our

Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours,

Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come,

thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever.

Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread

The Celebrant breaks the consecrated Bread.

A period of silence is kept.

Then may be sung or said:

Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us;

Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

Facing the people, the Celebrant says the following Invitation

The Gifts of God for the People of God.

The ministers receive the Sacrament in both kinds, and then immediately deliver it to the people.

After Communion, the Celebrant says

Let us pray.

God of abundance, you have fed us with the bread of life and cup of salvation; you have

united us with Christ and one another; and you have made us one with all your people in

heaven and on earth. Now send us forth in the power of you Spirit, that we may proclaim

your redeeming love to the world and continue for ever in the risen life of Christ our Savior.

Amen.

The Blessing
