Northeastern Scale Lumber was founded in 1946 with a simple philosophy: to provide the finest model building materials possible.

Our founder, the late James Doyle, was an avid model builder who started designing model kits and cutting wood shapes for himself and others when he found they weren’t available anywhere else. His talent for precision woodworking was truly a gift. In many instances, out of frustration for product, Jim had to literally invent the machinery to cut wood to his exacting requirements. As a reminder to us all, Jim’s original drafting table still stands, a tribute to his superb design talent.

And now, several decades later, Northeastern Scale Lumber refuses to compromise the philosophy and tradition first started by Jim Doyle. All manufactured products by Northeastern Scale Lumber are built with the same quality, dependability and integrity, just as they were made, back in 1946.

About our wood

We start with the best trees. We select only the finest Basswood, Mahogany and Cherry lumber. Our Basswood is only selected and cut in a particular season to ensure proper color. Our FAS Pattern Mahogany is the highest grade mahogany available (virtually defect free), this is selected for its straight grain and constant color. All of our lumber is kiln dried to 6% to 8% moisture content. The process begins with rough timbers, through the method of jointing, planning and sawing, then we are able to generate smaller blanks which are then fed into molders to manufacture the scale lumber products enjoyed today. The out fall lumber is used to supply heat to the factory. Nothing is wasted, our saw-dust is used to manufacture animal bedding, or used for wood pellets.

Tolerances

All of our wood is accurate to 1/100 of an inch. All lumber is hand inspected for quality, dimension and color. Wood strips up to 1” wide are cut to precision dimensions, Sheets 2” wide or more are cut to close tolerance and are sanded smoothly on both sides. Because of the natural characteristics of wood and the tooling employed in cutting, most strips and sheets have one surface smoother that the other. Modelers are advised to select and inspect stock to take advan- tage of this feature. Lumber should be stored in a dry location, unheated cellars or garages should be avoided.

All of our machinery is custom designed and fabricated or has been modified by our staff engineers for ultimate precision and quality. Innovation has always played a vital roll at Northeastern Scale Lumber Company. Our design team is constantly modifying and improving existing products, and designing new products with fresh ideas. We welcome custom orders of any quantity and look forward to seeing new visions by our clients.
