WELCOME TO KNOX

Knox Church is a congregation within the Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa New Zealand. We aim to create Christian community in which people of all

ages, sexual orientations, cultural backgrounds and socio-economic situations are included as equally valued participants in our congregational life. We cherish our diversity, offering a safe place of belonging to any who wish to

explore their beliefs in an atmosphere promoting discussion, the development of healthy relationships and spiritual growth. We strive to be open to dialogue and shared experiences with people of other faiths. We enjoy worshipping the God made known in Jesus, endeavouring to do so in ways that are relevant to our daily lives, respect the integrity of creation, and make a positive difference

to our wider world.

A loop system for hearing aids operates at Knox.

Toilets are available through the door on the lectern side of the sanctuary.

This morning the Bible already has been placed on the lectern, so will not be

processed in. At 10 o’clock, with the congregation remaining seated, the minister approaches the Advent Wreath. Once he has read the Nativity Passage from Luke’s Gospel, he lights the Christ Candle. The service proceeds from there.

The Nativity: Luke 2: 1-14 The Lighting of the Christ Candle The Christmas Proclamation:

Behold, I bring you good news of great joy! GLORY TO GOD IN THE HIGHEST! Come, let us go now to Bethlehem, AND LET US SEE THIS THING THAT HAS COME TO PASS.

Without announcement, we stand to sing Hymn: Adeste Fideles John Francis Wade (c.1711-1786)

Organ Fanfare and organ solo verse

1. O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant, O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem; come and behold him born the king of angels; O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord!

2. God of God, Light of light, lo! he abhors not the Virgin’s womb; very God, begotten, not created: O come, let us adore him . . .

3. Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation, sing all ye citizens of heaven above. ‘Glory to God, glory in the highest’: O come, let us adore him . . .

4. Yea, Lord we greet thee, born on Christmas morning, Jesu, to thee be glory given; Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing: O come let us adore Him . . .

News reached our ears that something wondrous had happened. IT WAS GOOD NEWS FOR ALL THE WORLD.

Word came to us, that heaven’s glory had fallen into our life, THAT A SAVIOUR HAD BEEN BORN.

This we heard. SO, LIKE MANY BEFORE US, WE CAME TO SEE THIS THING THAT HAD COME TO PASS.

Mary and Joseph are here; SHEPHERDS AND KINGS ARE HERE;

Angels rejoicing are here - MANY VISITORS GATHER IN ONE ACT OF WORSHIP.

At the Bethlehem cradle WE SEEK OUR PLACE IN THE COMMUNITY OF CHRIST.

And here, O God, you receive us with love. YOU PLACE AMONG US, THE CHILD OF BETHLEHEM:

God of God, LIGHT OF LIGHT,

the gentle Lamb PROMISED FROM ETERNAL YEARS.

Bless our coming here, O God, with your joyful, peaceful presence, through Jesus, born this day, AMEN.

Hymn: Infant Holy Polish traditional carol melody

1. Infant holy, infant lowly for his bed a cattle stall; oxen lowing, little knowing Christ the babe is Lord of all; swift are winging angels singing, nowells ringing, tidings bringing, Christ the babe is Lord of all.

2. Flocks were sleeping, shepherds keeping vigil till the morning new saw the glory, heard the story, tidings of a gospel true; thus rejoicing, free from sorrow, praises voicing greet the morrow, Christ the babe was born for you.

Polish Carol, tr. Edith Margaret Gellibrand Reed (1885-1933)

Hymn: Humility John Goss (1800-1880)

1. See, in yonder manger low, born for us on earth below; see, the gentle Lamb appears, promised from eternal years: Hail, O ever-blessed morn; hail, redemption’s happy dawn; sing through all Jerusalem: “Christ is born in Bethlehem!” 2. Say, you humble shepherds, say what’s your joyful news today? tell us why you left your sheep on the lonely mountain steep: Hail, O ever-blessed morn . . .

3. “As we watched at dead of night, all around us shone a light; angels singing ‘Peace on earth’ told us of a Saviour’s birth.” Hail, O ever-blessed morn . . . 4. Holy Saviour, born on earth, teach us by your lowly birth; grant that we may ever be taught by such humility. Hail, O ever-blessed morn . . .

1. Hark! the herald angels sing glory to the new-born King; peace on earth, and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled: joyful all ye nations, rise, join the triumph of the skies, with th’angelic host proclaim, Christ is born in Bethlehem.

Page 9: The First Visitors - Knox Church, Christchurch · This Week: 25 December 2016 – 31 December 2016 Today 10.00 am Christmas Day Worship Next Week: 1 January 2017 – 7 January 2017

Hark! the herald angels sing glory to the new-born king. 2. Christ, by highest heav’n adored, Christ, the everlasting Lord, late in time behold him come, offspring of a virgin’s womb: veiled in flesh the God-head see; hail th’incarnate Deity! Pleased one earth with us to dwell, Jesus, our Emmanuel. Hark! the herald angels sing glory to the new-born king. 3. Hail the heav’n-born Prince of Peace! Hail the Sun of Righteousness! Light and life to all he brings, risen with healing in his wings; mild he lays his glory by, born that we no more may die, Born to raise us all from earth, Born to give us second birth. Hark! the herald angels sing glory to the new-born king. Charles Wesley (1707-1788)
