VFW Auxiliary
Department of Missouri
General Orders
September
This year so far has been a challenge. With the National Convention being
cancelled and not knowing what will happen next. I am proud, how the Auxiliary
has worked on, to meet the challenges that arise.
The Schools of Instruction were a big success! A great big THANK YOU to Janet
Barlar and Judy Northcutt for doing an outstanding job. Getting the information
out there was our prime concern.
All National Officers were elected and installed on July 24, 2020, Congratulation
to all the New National Officers and to our own Brenda Bryant for being elected
National Conductress and Lois Callahan for being elected National Guard.
It is important that you have gotten your dues notices out to your members.
Process them as soon as you get them. On new members make sure the
application is filled out completely and correctly. Our membership chairman Amy
Jo Lett has hit the ground running. At this writing (July) we are at 66.15%. WAY
TO GO! Keep up the good work. If you have members in need, due to losing
work, etc. help them out. Pay their dues out of your relief fund. If you have
elderly that are in assisted living quarters. Pay their dues. Amy Jo is planning on
doing u-tube documentaries on membership on Facebook for members only.
Watch for more information.
Make sure you check deadline dates. They are when, the information should be
in hand. Not the date you send it.
Have you donated to the Department Service Officers Fund? Please do so, as this
helps our Veterans.
Being that our Department convention had to be cancelled, we are extending the
Council of Administration meeting to start on Thursday afternoon at 1pm. This is
so Rowena can give out her awards from the 2019-2020 year. Rowena and her
team have done an outstanding job and have received many National Awards.
(Which are listed on a separate page). Also, the Department Commander and I
have planned a Family Freedom Festival on Sat afternoon. The C of A will be held
at the Hilton Garden Inn Independence 19677 E. Jackson Dr. Independence, MO
Phone number 816-350-3000. September 24 – 26th 2020. Banquet will be on the
26th, with a costume contest with Mickey Mouse and Friends as the theme. This
is tentative due to Covid-19.
Have you checked out the National Program Book? It is a great resource.
Auxiliary Presidents make sure you pass out the General Orders to all your
chairman immediately. Do not wait till the month is over. A chairman should
never say “No Report”. You report on what is in the General Orders and tell them
about what you plan for your chairmanship. Plan, Plan, Plan, make your Auxiliary
proud on your outstanding ideas.
September is Suicide awareness month. Talk to a Veteran. Look for the signs.
National Café for Sept. 10, 2020 has been cancelled.
Big Ten is in Columbus Ohio October 16 – 18 2020.
National Home trip October 22-25,2020 (Has not been cancelled yet but other
ideas are being discussed.) Currently, we think the bus is a no go. It is up to the
National Home if they want that many people there at one time. Sounds like it
might get cancelled. Watch out for more information.
National Presidents Visit April 24th – 26th, 2021. This will be at the Hilton
Independence. Regina Bryant is the chairman and has a lot planned for Sandi.
Please recognize September 11th Patriots Day, September 18th is POW/MIA
recognition day and Sept. 24th Gold Star Mother’s and Family Day.
Have you made your Health and Happiness donation? 10 cents per member. 25
cents per member gets you a citation from National. Now is the time to make
your Hospital donation.
My Special Project are the Tiny Homes. They have the homes done and a
community center built but still need help for our homeless Veterans.
On both the National and Department websites, you will find sources and
information to have a successful program. Contact the District or Department
chairman to help.
We have shirts and pins available. If you would like one, get them at the
Council meeting or send an order to me and I will send it to you.
Support our ways and means. This will help Janet Barlar next year.
Honoring Our Mission to Serve Veterans
“STAY HUMBLE WORK HARD BE KIND”
Respectfully,
Ella Edwards-Kirtley

September 2020 Promotional Material
There are four Patriotic Holidays in September – get creative and plan a way to celebrate each of the
holidays. Put an article in your local paper or hold a short ceremony and explain the importance of each
of the holidays to your community. Let me know how you recognize each holiday.
1. Patriot Day – September 11 – in memory of those killed during the September 11, 2011 terrorist
attacks.
2. Constitution Day and Citizenship Day – September 17 – commemorates the formation and
signing of the U.S. Constitution in 1787. Citizenship Day was formerly known as “I am an
American Day” and was promoted by the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service.
3. POW/MIA Recognition Day – third Friday in September (9/18/2020) – honors the commitments
and the sacrifices made by our nation’s prisoners of war and those who are still missing in action.
Honor former Prisoners of War and those Missing in Action by having a Missing Man Table
Ceremony. Instructions for the table setup and sample ceremony wordings are available on the
Resources section on Malta.
4. Gold Star Mother’s/Family’s Day – last Sunday in September (9/27/2020) – honors mothers and
families who have lost a service member in the line of duty or in support of military activities.
Special Note: Every Auxiliary that promotes patriotic holidays in their community and fills out an entry
form will be given a citation from National Headquarters. Forms are due March 31, 2021 and are
available at vfwauxiliary.org/resources.
Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award
The VFW Teacher of the Year award recognizes teachers for their outstanding commitment to teaching
Americanism and patriotism to their students. Examples of award-winning activities from past winners
include field trips to city hall, community volunteer projects, hosting veterans to discuss their military
experiences, and special projects that foster the development of democratic values and beliefs. Each
Post and Auxiliary can have three winners – one at each level: elementary (K-5), middle school/junior
high (6-8) and high school (9-12). Talk to school principals and parents about the awards and have them
nominate a teacher.

Teach Patriotic Traditions Teach children to honor and respect our flag. Visit schools, day care centers and youth group to help
children learn the Pledge of Allegiance or the first verse of the “Star-Spangled Banner”. Explain what the
colors, stars and stripes on the U.S. Flag represent. Recognize their hard work with a small patriotic gift.
On the Resources page in Malta there is a bookmarker template with the National Anthem on one side
and the Pledge of Allegiance on the other. Print them out on cardstock and give them to the students.
Flag Exchange Drive Have you seen the Flag Exchange Drive flyer in the resource section at vfwauxiliary.org? It’s a great way
to let businesses and families know about your flag collection day. The flyer says “Is your American Flag
torn and tattered? Not sure what to do? Contact us and we’ll dispose of it for you”. There is space on
the flyer to add your contact information. If your auxiliary can afford it, offer to exchange worn-out flags
with a new one. People who fly a worn-out or tattered flag probably don’t mean to disrespect the flag;
they just don’t know how to properly retire the flag. It’s our job to teach them. Flag Retirement
Ceremonies honoring our Flag serve as one of the most beautiful forms of respect for our country. For
more information on this and other Flag etiquette, visit vfw.org/community/flag-etiquette. Let me know
how many tattered flags you are able to properly retire.
Recognition of Outstanding Community Flag Display When a community member or organization takes the care and time to display our “Stars and Stripes”, it
reinforces patriotism to the entire community. Your auxiliary can recognize this display of patriotism by
presenting a certificate of appreciation from your Auxiliary. Certificates are available on the Resources
page in Malta.
What does Americanism mean to you?
Let me know what Americanism means to you by putting your thoughts into words and bringing them to
the Fall department meeting. It can be a poem, a few sentences or a full-blown novel. I look forward to
reading what Americanism means to you. Everyone who turns in something will be entered in a drawing.
AUXILIARY COMMUNITY OUTREACH
GENERAL ORDERS
September 2020
Our National Ambassador DIANE M. PENCAK says:
“Volunteering is considered a selfless activity where an individual or group
provides services for no financial or social gain to benefit another person, group or
organization.”
Here are some Benefits of Volunteering:
People of all ages and abilities have the opportunity to volunteer.
You can participate and have a positive impact whether you live in a
small rural community, suburb or big city.
Volunteering allows us to express our interests and excel in what we
like and do best.
Volunteering is renowned for skill development and is intended to
promote goodness or to improve human quality of life.
Volunteering often provides positive benefits for the volunteer as
well as for the person, agency or community served.
Volunteering is second nature for VFW Auxiliary members. It’s what we do, how
we do it, where we do it and why we do it - because it’s always the right thing to
do. I can be done by many or just one. I have many names. Everyone benefits
except the VFW or Auxiliary. What am I?
Need some ideas of how we can help in our communities?
Hunger/Homelessness: Soup kitchens, food pantries, homeless shelters,
farmers markets, backpack snack programs, toiletry care packages, Habitat
for Humanity
Career skills: GED tutoring, job coaching, mock interviews, business
mentoring, resume assistance
Elderly: Serve lunch to seniors, Meals on Wheels, senior dining club, pet
therapy for seniors, yard and garden care (mowing, raking leaves, pruning
bushes, etc.), housekeeping and laundry services
Health/Research: American Cancer Society, American Diabetes
Association, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Autism Speaks, Relay for
Life, Alzheimer’s Association
Nature: Organic greenhouse, community gardens, park maintenance
Animals: PAWS, local humane societies, animal rescue groups
MAKE SURE YOUR AUXILIARY HAS APPROVED A MOTION TO DO THE
AUXILIARY COMMUNITY OUTREACH EVENTS FOR THE ENTIRE YEAR.
We will be tracking Auxiliaries, members, and hours, NOT money spent. This is
for Service only, not money donated.

Hello Extension Chairmen;
The first thing I will ask of you is to change my phone number in your program book. My
correct phone number is 417-236-8112.
Have you been working hard helping your Auxiliary stay “Healthy”? Are you reviewing the
“Building on the VFW Auxiliary Foundation” guidebook? Are you going to the National website
at vfwauxiliary.org and finding your resources? Have you been working with the Membership
and Mentoring Chairmen? Have you made up your “Welcome Bags” for your new members
that you are helping get acquainted with our Organization? If you have answered no to any of
these questions, you need to get busy. Our year will be gone before we know it.
Some Auxiliaries are not able to have “in person” meetings with social distancing and are
zooming their monthly meetings to get the information out to our members. If this is your
situation, make it a point to call your new members and make arrangements to get or send the
new members their “Welcome Bags” and talk to them about what we are doing. Invite them
to zoom with you so you can talk them through the meeting so they will understand our
protocol. We are all in a new situation and we must all think outside the box to get our work
done and complete our mission to serve our Veterans and Members. We can do this!
I am so sad that I have not received any answers to my clue from the July/August General
Orders for the “Scavenger Hunt” at the writing of these General Orders. Please play along
with the Department Chairmen and send your answers to them. If you solve the puzzle on the
back of this paper you can find the answer to my clue. Send me your answer so you can be
entered into the drawing for a prize that will be given by our Department President Ella.
Thank you for all you are doing for our Veterans, Members and Our Auxiliary. Remember to
“Stay Humble, Work Hard and Be Kind” while we “Honor Our Mission to Serve Veterans”.

SEPTEMBER PROMOTION PROGRAM GOALS
Kathleen Ditch Hospital Chairman VOLUNTEER RECRUITMENT & RECOGNITION
Cell #: 314-882-7271 WOMEN VETERANS HEALTHCARE PROGRAM
email:[email protected] SUICIDE PREVENTION & MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES
VOLUNTEER RECRUITMENT AND RECOGNITION:
Volunteers are more important than ever; show your support by thanking them at your regular meeting,
luncheon or at your Christmas Party: presenting them with their pins and certificate they have earned this
year. A luncheon would be great to offer you could invite their family for the event. Thank your volunteers at
all meetings and let them know how much they are appreciated: they are enriching lives one veteran/family at
a time. Please follow all regulations due to the COV19 at all VA and non-VA facilities.
SUICIDE PREVENTION & MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES:
Educate yourself and others about the warning signs of suicide; make a positive difference in the life of a veteran or
service member. The crisis hot line number is 800-273-8255 press 1. We owe it to our Veterans to be with them when
their battle moves from the front lines to the home front. Help to alleviate fear, confusion and loneliness. Bring comfort,
joy and normalcy to our veterans; we should stand ready to answer a call our veterans will not make for themselves. I
have Tear Drop Pins if you are interested in contacted a local business to have some made to use for a fund raiser, let
me know and I will get one to you.
WOMEN VETERANS HEALTHCARE PROGRAM:
Women are the fastest-growing group of veterans: most underserved with in the VA Health Care System,
often mistaken for a spouse of family member. My goal this year is to see if we can supply the VA hospitals
with robes for women. If we don’t try we will never succeed.
I am asking all Hospital Representatives to check with their Hospital and see if their hospital provides a robe
for when women have an impatient stay at all VA Health Care System in Mo. Please let me know of the
outcome of your calls.
Please take a few minutes and visit the Research and Development web site to be informed of all the topics
that is listed in the Overview of VA Research on Women’s Health. researchdevelopmentva.gov

LEGISLATIVE PROGRAM September 2020
The August primary elections are behind us. Did you vote? I am hopeful that each of you reading this will answer with a resounding, “YES!” I am confident that you
chose your candidate carefully, always keeping our Veterans in your mind and in your
heart! So what’s next? Keep interacting with those candidates. Get out to candidate forums and ask questions. Contact the candidates by text or email. Ask them if they know about the Veterans Homes in Missouri. Will they be sure to be watchful to see that funding for those wonderful homes continues? Will they work to see that our Veterans get any benefits to which they are entitled? Even if a benefit is funded by the federal government, sometimes our state and local legislators can advocate on behalf of a Veteran needing help. These are great ways to be an ADVOCATE for Veterans. There are important dates coming up:
OCTOBER 7th is the last day to register to vote in the November 3 election.
OCTOBER 21st is the last day to request an absentee ballot, and it must be
returned by election day…which is…
NOVEMBER 3rd - ELECTION DAY!
If, for some reason, you are not registered to vote, PLEASE register now! The end of summer is a great time to have a registration drive. Contact your local clerk’s office and ask to be deputized to register voters. Have an event at your post. Ask a local grocer if you can have a table at the door to register voters. This is a great way to be ENGAGED in supporting Veterans’ issues. Remember to be INFORMED by reviewing the VFW Priority Goals. Subscribe yourself and others to the VFW Action Corps Weekly. Visit our website or the VFW website to get on board! In the program book I said you could earn extra points on your year-end report by sending me the name and contact information of your Auxiliary Legislative Chairman by July 1. Well…the program books didn’t go out as early as we hoped. So…send it by September 15 if you want 5 extra points on your year-end report. Our National Legislative Ambassador, Carmelita Jones, has an award for us, too. It is for the most outstanding training of members on the legislative process. Look for information about this award on the National website at www.vfwauxiliary.org. (There are three of me. We tell you how to be helpers for our Veterans. Can you find us?) I’d love to hear from you to know how things are going with the legislative program in your Auxiliary. Feel free to send articles and pictures along. I’ll save them to review at year-end. ***Remember to “Stay humble, work hard and be kind!” while Honoring our Mission to serve Veterans!*** Nancy Smith, Legislative Chairman, [email protected]

SCHOLARSHIP PROMOTION
SEPTEMBER 2020
It’s hard to believe that Summer is almost gone. Hopefully by the time this gets to our members schools will be in session and students are starting the task of getting back in the swing of things with extracurricular activities, and the thing they love, homework. We all know that students have a lot to think about when school goes back into session. With our Scholarship Program we can give them something to do that they will not only enjoy doing but can be rewarded for doing it. As I stated in the July – August Promotion if schools are not in session teachers and principals will be at the schools and you need to call and make an appointment to talk to them so students can be made aware of our program. Be sure and take some brochures with you so teachers can give them to students that are interested in entering. Read these brochures so you know the themes and deadlines. Don’t forget the home schooled and private schools. Remember to check back with the school to see if any help is needed. So here is a reminder of each Scholarship.
VOICE OF DEMOCRACY theme for 2020-2021 is “Is This the Country the Founders Envisioned?”. Open to students grades 9-12 by the October 31 deadline. They must be enrolled in public, private or parochial or be home schooled. This is an essay contest that has to be written and recorded on a CD or flash drive and be 3 to 5 minutes in length ( + or – 5 seconds). All entries should be sent to a local VFW Post within the student’s area.
PATRIOT’S PEN theme is “What is Patriotism To Me?” and is to be 300 to 400 typewritten words (+ or – 5 words). This contest is open to students in grades 6-8 and is due to the Post by October 31 and judging in the District deadline is December 15. They also must be enrolled in public, private, or parochial schools or be home schooled by October 31.

These past 5 months have been a very emotional time for all our Veterans and
their Families. Now more than ever is the time for all Auxiliaries to be supporting
our Veterans & Family program. This can be done in several ways.
Please remember any donations mailed to National Headquarters need to be
earmarked for Veterans & Family support program.
Unmet needs
Can you imagine being the spouse of a soldier on foreign soil. The rent is due or
the family automobile needs expensive work that the family cannot afford?
To learn more visit: https://www.vfw.org/assistance/financial-grants
Mental Health
In these trying times we need to be more aware of the Veterans & Military
Suicide Prevention, as well as Mental Health Awareness. A staggering 20
veterans commit suicide each & every day. Please remember to add the
Veterans Crisis number as a contact in your cell phone. That number is
800-273-8255, option 1.
National Veteran Service (NVS)
Always know who your Post Veteran Service Officer is. Your Post VSO officer is a
good place to start in guiding our Past & Present veterans to filing a needed
claim. Again, if mailing funds to National Headquarters to earmark for NVS.
Military Assistance Program (MAP)
Now is the time to be thinking about Adopting-a-Unit. If you haven’t already
Adopted-a-Unit, keep in mind Christmas is slowing sneaking up on us. Imagine
the smiles upon our soldiers overseas getting a package with all the goodies just
for them. Remember MAP keeps care packages circulating by covering the
postage cost. For guidelines to apply for MAP funds, contact the VFW Veterans &
Military support Office at 816-756-3390.
And please, I urge all Auxiliary & VFW members to take all precautions necessary
to stay virus-free.
