HUNTSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL
Fall has arrived at Huntsville High School, bringing new sports, new school units and new activities for local youth.
Several students from Huntsville have successfully been placed around the world through annual Rotary Exchanges. Students can gain insight into culture, language and traditions through these trips and many participants claim it is a life-changing expe-rience.
If you or a student you know loves to travel and try new customs, please contact Sue Fawcett for information and an applica-tion at 789-5594.
Huntsville High has approached a stretch of spirit activities for the year. The Hal-loween dance will take place on Thursday, Oct. 29 and the semi-formal dance has been scheduled for mid-December. Both
dances require a student card in order to be admitted. These cards will be sold until the end of the week at $15 each or $40 with a 2009-2010 yearbook. If student cards are not purchased this week, they will be sold in the library for $20. Encourage students to bring their money in as soon as possible.
Me to We, a school humanitarian associa-tion, will be putting on the Halloween dance for the school, charging a fee of $10 admit-tance or $1 off for every non-perishable food item up to $5. Students can potentially get into the dance for $5 with five canned food products.
Me to We has also launched their “Hal-loween for Hunger” campaign within the school, a competition between classes to see who can bring in the most food items. All canned food will be donated to a local food bank to support those in need. Hunts-ville High School is very proud of all the work Me to We does for the community.
On Nov. 19, student parliament will be
running a school board-initiated Day of Kindness, a day to promote kind behavior throughout all schools within Trillium Lake-lands District School Board. Activities will be run in the morning to spread the word of positive behavior.
Later that day, students have the oppor-tunity to participate in the “Vow of Silence.” Huntsville High School students will be joining thousands of people around the world who are making a statement about children’s rights by saying nothing at all.
By staying silent for 24 hours, students will raise awareness and collect donations that will give a voice to children silenced by oppression, war and poverty. It has been a very successful endeavor in the past.
The school year shows no signs of slowing down as students balance studies, sports, work and a social life.
As younger students prepare for trick-or-treating, students at Huntsville High School prepare for Halloween social gatherings,
special assignments and the constant threat of cold weather.
The fall highlights many school sports including rugby, soccer and cross country amongst many others. The cross country team will travel to the Muskoka-Parry Sound chamionships next week to compete with nearly 400 youth in each age group. The team has been training for several weeks rain or shine and is looking forward to com-peting in Woodbridge. The senior girls’ bas-ketball team competed in a premier tourna-ment over the weekend, notably beating a high-ranking team.
The girls played very well and are eager to play their next game in the upcoming weeks. The senior boys’ soccer team remains unde-feated except for a single game lost to Parry Sound. Boys’ volleyball will also be starting up over the next few weeks. Huntsville High looks forward to the budding athletic talent that will reveal itself as we enter a new sea-son of sports.
