African Music Experience

On Monday 25 February Steve Rivers from Unbeatable Energy came to school to demonstrate African djembe drums and to give the children the chance to learn different drumming techniques and rhythms. The resulting music was so

infectious, many children couldn’t resist the opportunity to dance along!

Through the drumming experience,

children were able to get an insight into the sounds, beats and energy of African village and tribal life.

This taster was also the launch of the Junior School’s chosen charity, which will be sponsoring an African child.

The Fortnight That Was…. 25th February—8th March 2013

As indicated in The Pitsfordian, this is the first edition of our new Pitsford Post, a fortnightly newsletter that will be emailed to all parents and downloadable from our website. We will include news snippets and details of forthcoming events, along with the occasional fun item.

One such fun item in this issue is a Quartets game. It was actually created for the Christmas holiday but we were not able to distribute it widely before we broke up so we have included it for those of you who like quizzes. So far we only have one correct answer so get your

thinking caps on!

Thank you for bringing it in to show the school!

Romans Invade Pitsford

On Thursday, the pupils of J3 were

transformed into Romans! Dressed

in Roman or Celtic costume

(complete with shields and swords)

they first spent time finding out

about Roman headstones, before

using Roman Numerals to make

their own.

The pupils have certainly had a lot

of fun on this Roman project but

they have also learnt a great deal

too.

Then using some Latin words, the class wrote a menu for a Roman 'cena' , meaning dinner. The young 'Romans' were then able to sample their proposed 'cena' whilst reclining Roman-style on the floor on cushions

On Friday, the class again donned their outfits and parents were in-vited to watch their assembly which

explained the Roman invasion of Britain and the opposition the

Romans faced from Bodicea's

army.

For Fox Hunting Mr James Barrington spoke in favour of fox hunting, saying that it was a humane way of maintaining the countryside. He pointed out that alternative methods of controlling foxes- shooting and snaring are actually more cruel. He also discussed how politics has been caught up in the debate. A good discussion ensued with views expressed on both sides of the issue. For over 100 years, right up until 1939, Pitsford Hall, now part of the school, was home of the Master of the Hounds of the Pytchley Hunt. Robert Tickle

Against Animal Testing Animal Aid is an organisation that supports animals’ rights and their welfare by protesting peacefully and legally. They argued the point that vivisection: the testing of products, medicine and operations on live animals, interferes with the rights of animals and suggested that alternatives such as testing on humans and stem cell testing are more effective. The class then watched a video showing suffering and deliberate cruelty, further emphasising Animal Aid’s point. After this, the students were able to ask questions and challenge and debate Animal Aid’s views. It was a very informative presentation and Lower Sixth General Studies would like to thank Lee and Ian. Megan Heaton-Harris

Sixth Form General Studies

The Sixth Formers receive a weekly General Studies lesson which helps to ensure they receive a broad education and are able to make their own informed opinions. Over the past couple of weeks, they have had talks from Animal Aid on Animal Welfare and then to offer an alternative opinion, James Barrington came to visit the school, speaking in favour of fox hunting.

Overall an excellent performance against bigger squads, both physically and numerically as we only had a squad of 9 instead of 12.

Ryan Marshall, James Smith, Maitin McKiernan, Cai Mackman, Shaun Oliver, Nathan Piper, James Whitaker, Oliver Fox, Eddie Hudson.

Fab results! Well done everyone who played.

Planning Ahead The Year 9 received a talk by Wendy Davies from the Inspiring Futures Foundation this week, to help them make their decisions regarding GCSE options.

This is always an exciting time for pupils as it is the first time that they will have made any real decision about where their future education or career pathway may lead. As part of the process, the year group have already researched career ideas via the Ku-dos careers database which the school subscribes to. Pupils are reminded to keep their log in details for this safe, as they will undoubtedly want to consult this at a later date.
