From the Principal Devil Ark Fundraiser Many of our children were thrilled to meet some baby Tasmanian Devils last week and to hear from Dean, a keeper from the Australian Reptile Park. In a wonderful show of generosity, our school raised $708 to support the Devil Ark project. Well done! Devil Ark is located high in the hills of the Barrington Tops and is the largest conservation breeding program for the devil on mainland Australia, working to save these iconic animals who are at serious risk of extinction from the highly contagious devil facial tumour disease. Thank you to the Cepak and Smart families for driving this fundraiser and to all of the families who donated cakes for the cake stall. Parent Helpers and Volunteers’ Breakfast In recognition of the valuable contribution to Galston Public School from our parent helpers and volunteers, we would like to invite all who have helped and volunteered at the school in any way during the year to join us for breakfast hosted by the teachers. This includes helping in the classroom, library, sport, scripture, special days, transporting students, computers, excursions, canteen and P&C. 2019 School Captains, House Captains and Library Monitors We have now concluded nominations, voting and selection of School Captains and Vice-Captains, House Captains and Vice-Captains and Library Monitors. Well done to all of the Year 5 students who nominated themselves for a leadership position. A letter will shortly be mailed home to the families of the children who have been elected or selected to fill a leadership role for next year and the students will be inducted at our Presentation Assembly on Thursday 6th December. I would like to thank Kim Alsdorf, our P&C President, who assisted as our parent representative with counting the votes for our School Captain and Vice-Captain positions. 2019 Classes Planning for 2019 classes will commence later this term. The number of classes in our school is determined according to the Department of Education’s staffing formula. Class groupings are constructed based on this allocation, the number of students in each grade and the needs of all students across the school. Our best laid plans often need to be amended if our numbers change at the beginning of the year.

Teachers will be collaboratively placing students in classes, taking many factors into consideration such as academic ability, attitude and commitment towards learning, as well as emotional and social needs. Student friendship groups are one of many considerations. As you would be aware, class time is learning time and our teachers want the best possible learning environment for your child and all of the children in each class. Please be aware that all students will soon have the opportunity to write down the names of six friends and the teachers will take this into consideration when forming classes.

Forming classes is a thorough process that involves considerable time, sensitivity and care. It is not a process about one child; every child is important. Every child is placed in reference to a bigger plan of how students, classes and teachers come together for optimal learning, all bound by the Department’s staffing allocation and the number of classes in our school. I know that many of you value the hard work and time that goes into this process.

Please be aware that requesting a particular teacher that you would like your child to have, or not have, will not be necessary. We are yet to finalise the classes/grades that teachers will be taking next year, and teachers will not necessarily be teaching the same grade/s as they are currently teaching. All of our teachers work very well together, undertake extensive professional learning each year and collaborate with one another to develop effective and differentiated teaching and learning programs for our students.

With this in mind, we would like to know of any factors that may affect the placement of your child in our 2019 classes. Whilst I cannot guarantee that we will be able to meet your requests, we will consider the information provided and, if possible, find a satisfactory solution. Please write a note to the Principal via the school office. Notes will be accepted up until Friday 30th November. Now is the time to let us know any relevant information, rather than at the beginning of next year when balanced classes have formed across the school. To minimise disruption and to retain balanced numbers, changes will not be made to classes once they have been formed in 2019. Bushfire Preparation & Planning - Old Towel Donations Needed Our designated on-site evacuation point in case of bushfire is the school hall. We need to block the areas around the large door with towels to prevent as much smoke as possible from entering the building. We are seeking donations of old towels that we can use for this purpose. If you have an old towel that you can donate, please send it in to the school office. Thank you. Hamper Donations Thank you to the families who have donated items for the hampers to be raffled off for our Carols Night. If you have not done so already, please consider donating. Congratulations Hannah B A big congratulations to Hannah B from 5-6M who has recently been announced as one of only two dancers from her age bracket in Australia to be selected to compete in the finals of the Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP) competition in New York next April. YAGP is the world’s largest student ballet scholarship competition and is widely recognised as the world’s premier scholarship program for young dancers aged 9-19. Each year, over 10,000 dancers participate in YAGP competitions and auditions in more than 25 locations in North America and international locations including Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Paraguay. Approximately 1,200 students are hand-selected each year by the YAGP panel of judges to proceed to the Finals in New York City, where they are seen by the directors and representatives of the world’s leading dance academies. What a wonderful achievement, well done Hannah and good luck!

Chloe’s Garden Thank you to Mrs Crofts, Mrs Turrell and Mrs Taylor for doing a big weeding and pruning tidy up of Chloe’s Garden at the front of the canteen building. Thank you also to Mrs Crofts and Mrs Nadwie for the beautiful butterfly and lavender hedge paintings on the side of the building. Congratulations Mr Finch Well done to Mr Finch who last week was re-elected to continue in role of President of Beecroft PSSA. Many of our students thoroughly enjoy participating in Beecroft Zone swimming, cross country and athletics carnivals, as well as our weekly inter-school sport during Term 3. These are just some of the sporting opportunities provided by Beecroft PSSA. Mr Finch brings a wealth of PSSA experience and expertise to the role.

BFT Thank you Well, well Galston you are amazing! Yesterday our fundraising day was an absolute success, we raised over $2000. The children and families in Cambodia will be very surprised when all their charities arrive, this will happen at the end of January when I arrive in Siem Reap. This visit will see a playground being built in a remote village and our charities being dropped off to families in need.

Thank you to all the Stage 3 children and some of the Year 4 students from 4-5P, for helping their leaders supply the fruit for our Fruit Salad party. The leaders spoke very confidently about how our lives are very privileged compared to the children in the villages of Cambodia. Thank you to all the children and families who donated money towards buying supplies to help those families in the remote villages of Siem Reap.

Sharon Pearce – 4-5P

News From 3-4S We have been so busy in 3-4S this year and are really looking forward to the next few weeks, there is so much happening! We have loved the Cricket Clinics and think we are getting better every week. We have now mastered the skills of taking a catch, calling between the wickets, hitting the ball into the gaps and communicating with our team. In Maths we have been working on division and multiplication, as well as decimals and fractions, and we’ve even learnt all about hundredths!

In English we have been looking at books by Shaun Tan, our favourites are ‘The Lost Thing’ and ‘Rules of Summer’. We have written our own rules to follow in summer and we have tried to find our lost monster. We have also enjoyed creating BTN clips about Shaun Tan. One of the things we have been most excited about this term is coding the robots as we have been developing our STEM skills. Did you know that coding a robot can be as simple as four coloured markers and some paper?

The thing we are most excited for, though, is camp! We are so excited to try all of the activities and learn some new skills with our friends. Thank you to the parents who have helped us during the year, we really appreciate the time you have dedicated to our class! Claire Sundin – 3-4S P&C News Carols Evening Hamper Raffle We are happily still receiving donations for our hamper raffle at the Carols Evening. There are still a few weeks to donate, please take items to the school office. Donation ideas include: Christmas decorations, biscuits, Christmas-themed lollies, other lollies/chocolates, unwanted (new) gifts and new books for children. We would also love donations of baskets to package the hampers in. Please remember when donating food items to double check the expiry date: do not donate out-of-date products please. Tickets for the hamper raffle have been sent home. If you require more, there are some in the school office. Our dinner menu is now on Flexischools. We ask that when ordering for the Carols Evening, you order everything you intend to order under the name of just one of your children (if you have multiple at school), to help us locate all of your order quickly on the evening. Do please feel free to order dinner for the extended family if they are coming to watch. We are also still selling raffle tickets. If you do require any more please see Mrs Morgan in the office. Chloe’s Front Garden and Mural The Robertson and Alsdorf families would like to offer a very big thank you to Belinda Nadwie (and her assistant Belinda Crofts) for her gorgeous purple butterflies above Chloe’s garden. We would also like to thank Belinda Crofts, Leisa Turrell and Kris Taylor for their work on the garden to bring it back to how it should be. I know Chloe would be looking down and thinking how pretty it all looks. XXXXX Kim Alsdorf – P&C President, [email protected] Canteen News Friday 30th November and Monday 3rd December Lunch + Counter Sales Please lodge all orders through Flexischools.com.au by 9.15am.
