The Glinka World Soil Prize
To keep up the momentum generated by the International Year of Soils & boost
awareness on the importance of Healthy soils for a healthy life
Objectives
• To honor individuals or organizations whose activities and leadership have contributed, or are still contributing to the promotion of sustainable soil management and the protection of soil resources as specified in the revised World Soil Charter, thereby improving the well-being of populations;
• To raise awareness of policy makers and the general public about possible solutions to tackle acute national and local problems as relates to soils, and to encourage all stakeholders and soil practitioners to engage in field-oriented work, with direct contributions to the preservation of the environment, food security and poverty alleviation.
Outline • The award of the World Soil Prize should take place during the annual
World Soil Day celebrations (5 December);• The Laureate will also be given an opportunity to deliver a keynote
during the opening of the corresponding Global Soil Partnership Plenary Assembly;
• Media coverage will be assured in connection with the annual delivery of the Prize;
• The World Soil Prize is to consist of a USD 15,000 award and Glinka Medal.
2016 – 2018: financial support by the Russian Federation
From 2019: to mobilize resources via the Healthy Soils Facility (sustainability of the prize)
Eligibility procedureNominees should:
• Have made outstanding achievements in implementing the principles and recommended actions of the revised World Soil Charter (June 2015) and be consistent to one of the five pillars of the GSP.
• If related to purely scientific or policy formulation and implementation work, such activities should preferably have had a proven impact at field level.
Due attention will be paid over the years to ensure appropriate balance among the Laureates with regard to geographical regions and main soil
disciplines
