PrefaceYou may be surprised to learn that over the last decade a revolutionary

scientific research project took place that led to major advances in how toproducewhatseemslikemiraculousresultsinyourlife,andextraordinarylevelsofmeaning and happiness. This bookwas part of thematerials developed forresearch participants in that project. More details about these studies can befoundinAppendixII.

Theprojectbeganbyexamining theeffectsour thoughtshaveon reality. Idon’tmean this in the traditional sense,where our thoughts overtly determineour choices and actions. Rather we explored things like the placebo effect,psychokinesis, power of prayer, mental effort, process and outcomevisualization,andsoforth.

Theprojectexaminedtheresearchliteratureacrossawiderangeofacademicand scientific fields, including: physics, chemistry, biology, religion,psychology, and medicine.While examining the religious research (power ofprayer, for example), a series of projects was undertaken that would changeeverythingforboththeproject…andyou.

We encountered the New Thought movement though recent books on the

topic,suchasTheSecret[1]

,andtracedthesematerialsallthewaybacktotheirbeginning in the late 1800’s. These books were part of the self-help market.Afteragoodhard look,wenoticed thatalmostnoacademic/scientific researchhadbeendoneonthevastnumberofproductsthatcomprisethepublicself-helpand personal growth markets. Because these materials seemed related to theproject,aninitialsetofsophisticatedexperimentswassetuptoseeiftherewasanythingtotheclaimsbeingmadebytheproductproducersandauthors.

Whatcamefromthisoverthecomingyearsrevolutionizedthewaypersonalgrowth, meaning, happiness, and ultimately advanced spiritual topics such as‘enlightenment’areunderstood.Theresults, ifyoulet them,will transformthequalityofyourlifeinwaysyoucurrentlycannotevenimagineaspossible.

a four-part continuum/model took shape, as seen below, and we learned thateveryonehasaspecificlocationonthismodel.

Itturnedoutthatthevastmajorityofpeople(90+%)areonthefarleftsideofthismodel,inthe‘Symbolic/EgoicSelf’portion.Chancesareyouareoneofthem, and if you are you’ve probably discovered that most of the personalgrowthmethodsavailabletoyouarenotveryeffectiveatproducinglastingwell-being(happiness,meaning,fulfillment,manifestationetc.).

The“GodFormula”

Through our research (conducted by theCenter for the Study of Intent), aformulawasuncovered forakeyportionof themodel thatwassoeffectiveatproducingwhatseemedlikemiraclesinpeople’slivesitbegantobereferredtoas the “God formula” among participants and researchers. This book outlinesthat formula, and is the finalversionof thehighly successful trainingmaterialthatwasusedwithresearchparticipants.

It’simportanttonotethatnospecificgodisimpliedbythisterm.Infact,ifyou’re not comfortable with the idea of ‘God’ that’s okay. The formula iseffectiveregardlessofpersonalbeliefs,aswe’veseenfromthewidevarietyofpeoplethathavebeeninvolvedinourresearch.Thenicknametheformulawasgiven resulted from its amazing effectiveness, not any underlying dogma. Itemergedfromstandardacademicresearchmethods.Thereisanoverviewoftheproject’sfindingsinAppendixI,whichmighthelpyoutomoreclearlyseethebenefitsofusingit,aswellaswhereitfitsintoouroverallresearch.Irecommendyouflipaheadtoitbeforereadingon.

Introduction

Therearemanyvariationsofself-helptypetechniquesavailable.Whenyou

thinkabout it,millionsof theseself-helpandpersonalgrowthtypebookshavebeen soldover the last 100+years, yetwidespread transformationofour liveshasnotresultedfromthem.Why?

Certainlytheredon’tseemtobeanylackoftestimonialsthatareputforthbythe product producers in this space. Likewise, it is relatively common to findpeoplewho are excited about the changes amethodmade in their lives. Still,widespread transformationhasbeen elusive.Our research looked into this andrevealedthatitisacomplexarea,andthatthereisalottoit.

Itturnsoutthatwhatworksforonepersonoftendoesnotworkforanother.Evenmoreinterestingisthatwhatmightworkforyouatonepointinyourlifewill probably not be effective later on, simply because you or yourcircumstances have changed. Our extensive research revealed that it is highlyunlikelyonemethodcanworkforeveryone.

Towardstheendofourresearch,weassembledabookthatcontainedwhatweconsideredtobeafull rangeofeffectiveoptionsandtechniques, inaformthatwaseasyforourresearchparticipantstounderstand,quicktoread,andthatcould be used effectively in their lives right away.You are reading a slightlyedited version of that book. If you’re looking for a bunch of fluff andinspirationalstories,youwon’tfindithere.Thisisacondensed“how-to”bookthat has been proven to work over and over in a very wide cross-section ofpeople’slives,allaspartofanacademicresearchproject.

Weused this text forour researchandbecame, toourknowledge, the firstscientists to successfully experiment with these concepts. The result was thediscovery of a series of techniques that lead from everyday consciousness toincreased daily happiness and satisfaction, and finally to enlightenment andbeyond(yes,thereisabeyond!).Thepartoftheresearchthatusedthisbookisnow concluded, and we are currently working on the final part of themodel/continuum (the far right side). This book looks at three primary components that combine to form acomplete system of person growth, and an assortment of techniques for eachcomponent. While I can provide the components, how they need to cometogether for maximum effectiveness will be uhnique to you. It is likely thatyou’ll need to experimentwith various combinations of these techniques untilyoufindtheonethatworksbestforyou.

Thismaysoundunusual.You’reprobablyusedtoreadingbookswheretheauthorsasserttheyhavetheoneanswerforeveryone.AttheCenterwetestedanenormousnumberoftechniquesbutdidn’tfindasingleonethatwashelpfultomore than a handful of individuals…when itwas beneficial for anyone at all.However,welearnedthattherearearelativelysmallnumberoftechniquesthatcan be combined inways that are highly effective. You just have to find theuniquecombinationofthesetechniquesthatworksforyourightnow.

Whatyouhold inyourhands is thedistilleddownwisdomfromallof thattesting. We were able to successfully identify core components from themethodsthatprovedthemselvesinourresearch.Whatwecannotdoistellyouhowtocombinethosecomponentstogetthemtoworkbestforyou.Peoplearesimplytoodifferentforthattobepossible.

So,you’llhavetojointheteam,beyourownscientist,andexperiment!Thegood news is that we’ve spent an enormous amount of time and moneynarrowing down the possibilities for you.My suggestion is to takewhat is inthese pages and follow your intuition.Make a choice from each of the threecomponents and test your first combination for two weeks. Two weeks isplentyoftimetodetermineifitisworking.Ifyouhaven’tseenresultsattheendofthattime,changeoneofthecomponentsandtryagain.Mostofourresearchparticipantswereabletousethisbooktofindthecombinationthatworkedforthemquitequickly;Isuspectthesamewillbetrueforyou.

Changes,Growth,AndCommonplace‘Miracles’

Whenyoufindthemethodthatworksforyou,andfollowit,itwillproducechangesinyou.Simplyput,you’llgrow.Thisgrowthwillalteryourplaceonthedevelopmental continuumwe uncovered, and thismeans that themethod youusedtoproduceitwillbecomelesseffective.You’llneedtoexperimentagaintofind the best combination of components for your new level of development.This isawonderfulsign! It showsyouare learning tomasteryourcapabilitiesand direct your life to achieve both your goals…and lasting inner peace andfulfillment.

Tomaximize your effectiveness, you’re essentially looking for two things.First,andmostimportantly,youmusteitherfindatechniquethatworksforyouorconstructonebasedontherecommendationscontainedinthisbook.Second,youmustmakesurethat it isactuallysomethingyouwilldo.Itdoesn’tmatterhoweffectiveatechniqueisifyou’renotwillingtotakethetimetoapplyit.

Thelatteristhemostfrustratingaspectoftheresearch.Myexperienceisthatpeople will look very hard for a technique that works, but often not apply itconsistentlyonceitisfound.Or,theypracticeitveryconsistencyandgetusedtothe‘miracles’itproduces.Astheybecomeincreasinglyaccustomedtothe‘flow’their lifehassettledinto, theyforget that thetechniqueiswhatgot themthere.When the (now taken for granted) flowgoes away, they start trying to find itagain using the technique that most recently worked. Save yourself thisinconvenience and try to remember that you are enjoying results because youfoundaworkingtechnique.Thebestwaytocontinuetoliveinthe‘flow’istopracticeit.

AWordOfCaution

Itmaysurpriseyoutolearnthatstayingwithonetechniquefortoolongcanactually hinder your progress. These techniques generally produce personalgrowth that moves you beyond the effectiveness of your original technique.Growthrequiresforwardmovement!TheCenter’sresearchhasshownthatwhatworksforuschangesaswegrow.

When you find the right combination of methods that work for you,inevitably thiswillproducepersonalgrowthandthemethodthatgotyoutherewill stop working. Because you’ve probably waited your whole life to find atechniquethatproduceswhatseemslikemiraculousresults,you’llbeinclinedtostaywiththe(nowfailing)method.

Themostlikelyresultofthiswillbeyourqualityoflifespiralingdown.Thegains you previously experiencedwill fall by the wayside and you’ll becomeincreasingly frustrated.When you start to see your ‘miraclemethod’ fail, it isveryimportantforyoutobeginexperimentingagainuntilyoufindthenewonethatworksforyou.

Inreality,fewpeopleseemtodothis(eventhoughtheyarewarned)beforethe spiraling down process begins. Over the years I’ve noticed that they tellthemselvestheyarejust‘inaslump’or‘outofsync’orsomethingsimilar.Thefactistheyhavegrownandtheirtriedandtruemethoduptothatpointwillnotworkforthemagain,excepttoreducetheirqualityoflife.Whenyoureachthispoint, you simplyhave to start exploring and find thenew technique thatwillcarryyoutothenextlevel.

WhyUseTheTerm“PowerofIntent”?

The most commonly used public term for the information in this book is“PowerofThought,”whichexpresses the idea thathowwe thinkand feelcanproducedramatic impactson theworld.Thisbookwaswrittenforandused inacademicresearch,whichusesalotofacronyms.PowerofThoughtshortenstoeither “POT” or “PoT”… both of which are unfortunate from a ‘politicallycorrect’standpoint!Thephrase“PowerofThought”alsocarriesoveracenturyofbaggagewithit,andwefelt itwasbest toexcludeitfromourresearch.Foreachofthesereasons,wechosearelatedtermtouse:“PowerofIntent.”

Throughoutthetextyou’llseenumbersthatcorrespondtonotesattheendofthe book. The goal was to provide a carefully selected range of high qualitymaterials(someacademic,somemassmarket)thatyoucanusewhenyouwantmore informationona topic.Given thevastamountofmaterialavailable, I’vetriedtokeeptheendnotes,andthusthereferencesection,downtoamanageablesize. I did this in severalways.For example, I chose to limitmyexamplesofreligionprimarilytoChristianity,andofspiritualsystemstoHuna.IchosethesebecauseeachcontainedmaterialthatIcoulduseinseveralplaceswithinthetext.Whileanymajorreligioncouldhavebeenused,Ifeltthatmorereaderswouldbeat least partially familiarwithChristianity than anothermajor religion such asHinduism.

WheneverpossibleI’vealsotriedtouserecenttextsthatillustratethepointsbeing made. This is especially important for scientific texts because they aremore likely to be up to date. I also favored texts and articles that I felt hadexcellentreferencesections,whentheywereavailable.Thisallowsyoutoselectabookyouareinterestedin,readit,andhavemanyfurthertextstoexplorethatitusedassourcematerial.Thisseemedmorepracticalthanprovidingalistof50bookstoillustrateeachpoint,whichIfeltwouldprobablyleaveyouscratchingyour head and confused about where to begin.When I selected texts withoutthesetypesofreferencesections,IdidsobecauseIfeltthattheywereamongthebest available on a topic.Whilemanyothers couldhavebeen listed alongsidethem, again, I felt itwasbest not to confuseyoubyproviding too longa list.Note thatwhenyousee“ibid”written inanendnote, itsimplymeans that theresourcehasbeenlistedindetailinapreviousnote.

Itisveryrareforabooklikethistoincludereferences.Manymassmarketpowerofintenttypebooksoftenalludetobeingsupportedby‘science’,butfewprovide references to back up their claims. Likewise, although they generallydrawfromeachother,itisunusualtoseereferencestoothermassmarketbooksinthem–probablybecausetheyareviewedascompetition.MyhopeisthatI’vemadeitveryeasyforyoutomoredeeplyexploreareasyou’dliketolearnmoreabout,ormaybejustfindsomeadditionalclarification.Someof thereferencedmaterials areonline,others canbeobtained fromyour local libraryororderedfromabookstoreorwebsitesuchasAmazon.com.

Ifyou’relikeme,youdon’twanttohavetosiftthroughabunchofchapters

beforeyougettothegoodstuff.Mostauthorsfeelthattheyhavetowarmyouup.Forabooklikethis,they’dprobablystartbygivingyouallkindsofstoriesthatprovideexamplesofpowerofintentatworkintheirlives.I’llworkinsomeofthatlater,butlet’sbeginbygivingyouthewholepicture.

After examining hundreds of power of intent (and other related personalgrowthandself-help)typebooksandmaterialsthatwereonthemarket,itturnedout thatvirtuallyallof themfitwithinasimpleformula.Mostof thematerialsonly involved part of the equation, but a few did provide the whole thing.Throughourresearchwelearnedthatitwasveryhelpfulforpeopletolearnthisformularightupfront.Itcanbeexpressedwiththefollowingequation:

V+E+R=MLooks pretty simple doesn’t it?Well, so does Einstein’s famous equation

E=MC2!InrealitytheaboveformulaisnowherenearascomplexasEinstein’s,butthere’sstillquiteabittolearnaboutitandwhatmakesitwork.We’llbeginby briefly looking at the components in this chapter, and then give each theirownchaptersoyoucanlearneverythingyouneedtoknowaboutthem.

“V” stands for visualization. If I say “Don’t imagine a blue house,” whathappens?Ifyou’relikemostpeople,apictureofoneimmediatelypopsintoyourmind.Thatpictureisagoodexampleofvisualization.

Some people don’t think they are good visualizers. If you’re one of them,you’reprobablysaying“Ididn’tseeastinkin’bluehouse!”That’sokaybecausetherearemanywaysaroundthisthatIcoverlater.Don’tfret…youcandefinitelystillusetheformula!

Visualizationisawayofexpressingwhatyouwant.Forwhateverreason,itseemstobeaneffectivemeansofgettingyourdesiresacrossandhavingthemreturn toyou.Thereare awidevarietyofbeliefs aboutwhy thismightbe thecaseandhowtobestmakeitwork.We’llexploremanyofthesesothatyoucanfind the best fit for you. For now just think of visualization as how youwillcommunicateyourdesires.

“E” stands for emotion. Emotion seems to be the energy that drives theprocess.Ironicallyitcanbegoodorbademotion.InthisbookIrecommendthat

youusegoodemotions, becausenegativeones canbe roughonyourbody.[2]

Whatgoodisgettingwhatyouwantifyouaren’thealthyenoughtoenjoyit?Youmenreadingthismaybetemptedtostopreadingatthispoint,especially

ifyouliveinaWesternnation.Thesecountries,includingtheU.S.,oftenraisetheir men to deny and suppress their emotions. Fear not, we’ll get this stepworking for you! Before you know it you’ll be sobbing like a baby… JustKidding!

Therealityisthatthere’sprobablyasignificantdifferencebetweenthewayyou’ve been taught to think about emotions and how we’ll use them forpowering the formula. You don’t have to worry about jeopardizing your‘manliness’inordertousetheformulatoachieveyourdreams.Ipromise.

The “R” refers to release. As we’ll see, there are two primary schools ofthoughtforthisportionoftheformula.Somefeelitisbesttotryandcompletelyforgetaboutwhatyouaskforafteryougeneratethevisualizationandempower

itwithemotion.[3]

Othersbelieve thatyoushouldcontinue touse the formula

again and again until what youwant hasmanifested.[4]

There are even someespeciallytrickyfolksthatdoboth.Don’tgethunguponthis,it’sreallyjustamatteroffindingtheonethatworksbestforyou.

Asyoumighthaveguessed,“M”isformanifestation.Manifestationisjustafancywayofsayingthatwhatyouwantshowsupinyourlife.

Rightaboutnowyoumaybethinking,“Isthatit?!?”Youmaybetemptedtosetthebookdownandgiveitatry.Byallmeansfeelfreetoifyou’dlike.But,theupcomingchapters,whichareshort,arefilledwithvaluabletipsandsecretsthatcanimproveyouroddsofsuccessimmeasurably.

Beforewegettothat,therearetwoveryimportantthingstoconsider.First,it’sagoodideatoknowwhatyou’dliketomanifest,orwhatchangesyou’dliketomakeinyourlife.Youmaybesurprisedathowchallengingitcanbetofigurethisout.We’llworkonitinthenextchapter.

Second, it’sverybeneficial foryou to learnhow to enter aproper stateofrelaxation. The formula has proven to bemuchmore effective if you can putyourselfintotheproperphysicalandmentalstate,andrelaxationplaysamajor

roleinthis.[5]

Mostpeoplethinktheyhaveaprettygoodideaofwhattheywantwhentheystartworkingwith the formula, however somedraw a blank.While these twogroupsmay seem like total opposites the reality is that they often havemuchmore in common than either suspects. From teaching the formula again andagain, I’vefound that thecleareryouareaboutwhatyouwant, thegreater thechancesofyoursuccess.

Aswe’llseesoon,thisclaritycantakemanyforms.Itisnotnecessarilytruethatmoredetailsleadtogreatersuccesswiththeformula.Howeverbeingabletoexpressaclearintentinthedirectionofwhatyouwantisimportant.Oneofthebenefitsofusingtheformulaishowadeptyoubecomeatfiguringoutwhatyoureallywant!

I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase, “Be careful what you ask for, you just

mightgetit!”[6]

Well,aftermakingtheformulaworkforyou-you’regoingtohaveanewappreciationforthissaying.Myguessisthatalmosteveryonegoesthrough this at first. Themore carefully you initially examinewhat you thinkyouwantanddistillitdowntowhatyouactuallywant,thebetteroffyou’llbe!Inthebeginningitcanbedifficulttotrulyknowwhatthatis,evenifyouthinkyou’veknownforyears.Thischapterisdesignedtohelp.

Peopleoftenaskiftheyneedtoaccepteverythingthatcomestothemfromusing the formula, even if they later decide they don’t want it. For example,maybe you’re at a sporting event sitting on the world’s most uncomfortablebleacherseatandyoudecidetousetheformulatomanifestacushion.Ashortwhile later the person behind you, possibly annoyed that you are squirminguncomfortablyandblockingtheview,offersone.Theproblemisitlookslikeithasbeenlyinginthetrunkofthisperson’scarforyears,soakinginoil(liketheotherexamplesinthebook,thisisatruestory…).

When a situation like this manifests, first be thankful for the offer. It’salways a good idea to express gratitude when a manifestation occurs. Next,congratulateyourselfbecauseyoudidmanifestthis!However,unlessyouwanttothrowawayyourpantsafterthegameyou’llprobablywanttopolitelyturnitdown.

Itwouldbehelpful ifyou’dstoprightnowandwritedowna listof thingsyouwant.Iknowyouprobablywon’t,nomatterhowmuchIbeg,becausemostpeople (includingme, typically) just keep on reading when they come acrossrequestslikethis.Theyfigurethatthey’llreadthebookandthencomebackanddotheexercises.Soundfamiliar?Donethatafewtimeshaveyou?Howabouthumoringme and doing it just this once? It’s really important because if youreadthenextparagraphbeforedoingthis,yourlatergoalsettingwillprobablybelesseffective.Anyoldscratchpaperwilldo…

...Now, lookatwhatyou’ve justwrittendown.Does it talk aboutphysicalthings (house, car, jewelry, vacation, job…) or does it talk about emotionalthings (happiness, harmony, joy, love, peace…)? You may have encounteredotherauthorswhosaysomethinglike,“Youdon’treallywantthatnewcar…you

wanttheemotionsthenewcarwillbringyou.”[7]

Wellthatmaybetrue,butifyou’re likeme you probably still want the car. Nonetheless I do believe it isimportant for your list to have both physical and emotional (even spiritual)items.Ifyourlistisheavyinasinglearea,it’sprobablyagoodideaforyoutodosomethinkingaboutwhatmightbemissing.

Manypeopleinitiallyapplytheformulaonlytophysicalthings.Whilethisiscertainly fine,with experience youmay begin to realize that this can actuallyprevent you from getting something much better that you didn’t think waspossible ormaybe even realize existed. One simple and quickway to try getaround this is to add some additional intent such as, “This or somethingbetter…”whenapplyingtheformulatoaphysicalitem.

If you primarily have an emotion-based list, there are some things toconsideraswell.Amajorissuewithnotthinkingaboutthephysicalisthatitisdifficult to address your overall quality of lifewithout it.There’s nothing thatsaysyoucan’texperienceallthepositiveemotionslistedpreviously,butstillbehomelessandhungry.While it’swonderful thatyou’ve includedemotions,myadviceistobegintothinkabouthowyou’dliketoshapethephysicalaspectsofyourlifeaswell.

Another benefit this has is that it makes you much more specific. Oftenemotions are generalized, but visualizing a new home requires focusing ondetails.You’llprobablyfindthatfocusingonphysicalleveldesiresleadsyoutoa much greater realization about what you do and don’t want, includingemotionally.

Forexample,althoughyou’dlike“love”this isavaguegoal.Visualizingahomemay lead toother realizations regarding thespecific typesof loveyou’dliketohaveinyourlife,howyou’dlikethemtomanifest,andsoforth.Maybereceiving love from your spouse and kids is important. Or maybe expressingyourloveforthemincertainwaystothemiswhatyoufeelyouneed.Yougettheidea.Visionsofahomecanbringthingslikethisup.Beingspecificmakesthismuchmore possible and helps ensure that youmanifest exactlywhat youwant.There’soneothercategorythatyoumightwanttoaddinifitdidn’tshowuponyourlist:servicetoothers.Youdon’thavetowishforworldpeace(franklythisisaprettyadvancedvisualizationtoshootfor!),butovertimeI’velearnedthatitisagoodideatoincludealtruisticitems.Onethatisalmostalwaysonmylistis

increasedcharitablegiving.[8]

Chapter3RELAX!Willyou?

Yoursuccessusingtheformulaisdirectlyrelatedtohoweffectivelyyouareabletofocuswhileworkingwithit.Amajorkeytothisisbecomingasrelaxedas possible before you begin.Research has shown that each of us has a finite

amount of attention.[9]

Ifwe’re dividing our attention between different taskswebecomemuchlesseffective.Inarelaxedstateyouaremuchmorelikelytokeepyourfocusonthetaskathand.

One scientifically proven way to relax is through a technique known asprogressive relaxation.This techniquehasbeenaround sinceat least1930.Asyoumightexpectwithanythingthatold,therearequiteafewvariationsofit.IcoverseveralbelowandIrecommendthatyoutryoutasmanyasyoucan.Oneofthethingsyou’llnoticeaboutthisbookisthatIpresentavarietyofwaystodo things. Some will probably feel more ‘natural’ to you than others. Byexperimenting,youcanfigureoutwhichversionofeachstepin theformulaisbestforyou.

The major difference in the way progressive relaxation can be practicedrelatestowhetherornotyoutenseupyourmuscles.Toperformtheprocedure,generally you start at the feet and systematicallywork yourway up the bodyrelaxing muscles as you go. Some people like to actually tense the muscles,othersprefer tosimplyfocusonthemand‘will’ themintorelaxing.Youdon’thave toalwaysdo this thesameway.Forexample, I startedout tensing them,butovertimehaveshiftedtojustfocusingonthem.I’vedonethissomuchthattoday I can lie down and almost immediately have my whole body becomerelaxed. Then, I do a quick scan from toe to head looking for any areas oftension thatneed tobe released.Thereareusuallyat leastacoupleofpocketsrequiringattentiontofurtherrelax.Asalways,dowhatfeels‘right’foryou.

In my mind, this would feel like the warmth and light of the sunsurrounding,penetrating,andrelaxingallofthemusclesthatittouched.Asonearearelaxed,I’dmovetheballupmybodytothenextarea.Thiscanbeaveryeffectiveprocedure ifyou’rehavingdifficultymentallyrelaxingyourbodybutdon’twanttousephysicaltensing.

After you’re donewithprogressive relaxationyou canuse another kindofvisualization to relax even further. An added benefit is that this gives you amental warm up for the visualization portion of the formula, which you’ll bedoingnext.Try to imagineyourselfdoingsomethingyoufinddeeplyrelaxing.Forsomepeoplethismightbeawalkinthewoodsorlyingbytheocean.Othersmight find a recreational activity like fishing relaxing. It’s okay to change thevisualization you use as long as it is very relaxing andmakes you feel good.Whenyouvisualize, try tomake the imagined situation as real as possible byinvolving all of your senses. There’s much more on this topic in our nextchapter.

Chapter4Visualization

Before we begin discussing the first component in the formula, let me

reiteratetheimportanceoffindingwhatworksbestforyou.Likeeveryone,youhaveyourownpsychologicalmakeupanduniquesetofneeds.Someversionsofatechnique,likevisualization,willprobablyworkbetterforyouthanothers.Inmyexperiencethebestwaytodeterminethisistoexperimentandseewhatfeels‘right’ toyou.Whenusing the formula,you’ll find itveryhelpful to tune intohowthingsfeel.We’lltalkaboutthismoreinthenextchapter,butfornowjustpayattentiontowhatlevelofmentalandemotionalcomfortisassociatedwithaparticularpartoftheformula.

Eachpartoftheformulawillhaveseveraloptionsforyoutoplaywith.Yourgoalistofindthecombinationthatworkbestforyourightnow,andnoticewhenitbecomeslesseffectivesoyoucanmakechangeswhenneeded.Froma“V”orvisualizationstandpoint, thereareessentiallytwomajorchoices,eachofwhichhastwohighleveloptions.

First,visualizationscaneitherbebasedonthedesiredoutcomeorthepathtothe goal. Which you use will most likely depend not only on what youexperiment with and find works best, but also upon the situation you areattemptingtoeffect.Second,visualizationscanbeeitherhighlydetailedor leftmorevague.AsalwaysI’llincludemycommentsoneach.Youshouldtrybothandseewhatfeelsmorecomfortabletoyou.Anotherwaytothinkaboutthisistofocusonwhatfeelsmore‘natural.’

Inrecentyears,therehavebeensomesurprisingdevelopmentsfromvariousacademicresearchersregardingportionsoftheformula.Severalrelatetotheideaof visualization and expressing intent. A wide range of researchers such as

William Braud[12]

(Institute of Transpersonal Psychology), Jeanne

Achterberg[13]

(Saybrook Graduate School), Robert Jahn[14]

(Princeton

University), William Tiller[15]

(Stanford University) and Glen Rein[16]

(QuantumBiologyResearchLab)have looked into themind/matter interactioneffects. Each of these researchers, and many more like them, claim to havedemonstratedeffectsexperimentally.Youcanfindmoreinformationaboutthisresearchintheendnotesprovidedatthebackofthebook.

BePositive,FocusOnthePresent

Therearesomerecommendationsregardingvisualizationthatarepracticallyuniversalinpublicbooksandmaterialsonthistopic,butthatdoesn’tguaranteethey will work for you. Two of the most popular are to construct yourvisualizations so that they are based in the presentmoment and to keep thempositive. Tomake your visualizations in the present moment, you simply seewhatyouwantasalreadybeingrealforyou,rightnowasyouvisualize.Manyauthors say if you make an affirmation or visualization for some time in the

future it will tend to remain in the future.[17]

Given that you’re using theformulatomanifestthingsinyourlifenow,that’snotveryhelpful!

Onthesubjectofmakingthempositive,ifyourgoalistogetoutofdebtyouwouldvisualizeyourselfasbeingdebtfree.Alotofpopularliteraturesuggestsyoushouldavoidnegativewords.Forexample,manysaythat“Wedon’thavedebt,”wouldeffectivelybeinterpretedas,“Wehavedebt”becausethenegative

word “don’t” is not heard by the subconscious portions of your mind.[18]

Though this is not well supported by modern psychological research, I dobelievethatit’sbettertoconditionyourselftothinkusingpositivewords.So,Isuggestconstructingyourvisualizationsandgoalswiththisinmind.

Taken together these two concepts suggest that when constructing yourvisualizationsyoushouldonlyusepositivethoughtsandintent,andyoushouldseewhatyoudesireasalreadybeingyours. It’s important tonote that,despitethe popularity of these ideas, they represent just one of view of whatvisualizationcanbe.

We’ll be adding to these two concepts and trying to paint a slightlymorecomplete picture, starting with this version that involves basing yourvisualizations in the present moment. Using this method, perhaps the mostimportantthingisthatyouinternallyexperiencewhatyoudesireascompletelyandpositivelyaspossible,whilestillkeepingyourbodyrelaxed.

Onewaytodothis is totrytoactuallyexperiencewhatitwouldbeliketohave your goal accomplished. There are two ways to do this. First, you canvisualizeyouraccomplishedgoalfromthe‘outside’asacompletedscene.Thiswouldbevery similar to lookingat apictureorwatchingamovie that starredyour completed goal. Depending on the goal, your completed scene ormoviemightevenhaveyouinit!Formostpeopleitisbesttovisualizethisin3D.Youmightexperiencethisbylookingdownfromabove;orfromwithinthemidstof

it;fromtheoutsideleft,right,front,orback;oranothervariation.You’dtrytoexperiencehowthe‘totality’ofthisversionofrealityfeelsforyou.

Another technique is it unfolding right before your eyes, just as youdo ineverydayreality.Hereyouwanttoexperienceyoursensesjustasyouwouldiftheexperiencewasactuallyoccurring.Yourgoalhere is to internally simulatehow you would actually be experiencing reality if your goal had alreadymanifested.

Let’slookatanexample,andtieinhowtoframethingspositively.Supposethat you want to be debt free. You would close your eyes, go through theprogressive relaxation steps, and then try to reproduce an internal state that isyourbestguessforwhatyouwouldexperienceifyouweredebtfreetoday.Partofthiswouldbehowyoufeelemotionally,whichI’llcoverinthenextchapter,butitgoesbeyondthat.

Youmightexperienceloggingontoonlinecreditcardaccountsandseeingazerobalance.Youmightrememberbacktopayingoffeachcardinfull.Thingslikethiscanbeimportantbecausefilingforbankruptcycanalsowipeoutcreditcard debt and we want to do it positively. Along those lines, youmight alsoremember back to how the money just seemed to magically appear and keptarrivinginverypositivewaystomakethisgoalareality.

Thoseofyou thatwant touseamoredetailedvisualizationmightenvisionspecificways that themoneyarrived,howyouwereable toeasilyadhere toabudgetandsoforth.Thistypeofgoalmayalsoleadyoutorealizethatyoudon’tjustwant tobedebt free,but ratherwant tohaveenough incometobeable topurchasewhatyouwant and remaindebt free.Distinctions like this shouldbeexpectedandit’soktoadjustyourgoalsandvisualizationsastheyarise.

BeRealistic,FocusOnThePath

The secondmajorway of visualizing involves focusing on the path itwilltake to attain your goal, rather than seeing it as already realized. In the late

1990’sShelleyTaylor’sgroupatUCLA[19]

researchedthedifferencebetweenthese two types of goal-directed visualization, calling the first outcome-basedsimulationandthelatterprocess-basedsimulation.Foraboutaweekbeforetheirmidtermexam,collegestudentseithervisualizedhowtheywouldfeelaftertheyfoundout theygot agoodgradeon theirmidterm,or theyvisualized thepaththeywouldtaketogetagoodgrade(suchasdevotingstudytime),orboth.Thegroup of students that visualized the process significantly outscored the groupthatjustvisualizedapositiveoutcome.Thegroupthatvisualizedbothoutcomeandprocessscoredaboutthesameasacontrolgroup.

So,thereisactualscientificevidenceagainstthe‘default’publicly-heldviewthatyoushouldalwaysvisualizetheoutcomeandnottheprocess.Infact,whenallavailablestudiesarelookedatamorecomplexpictureemerges.Forexample,sometimesthereisnowaytovisualizeapathtosomethingbecauseyousimplyhave no idea how to accomplish it. In this case outcome simulation is oftenbettertouse.Theviewinthepsychologyliteratureisthateachoftheseeitherareoraren’teffectivebasedonthecoping,emotionalregulation,andotherbenefitsyouderivefromthem,aswellastheextenttowhichtheymatchtheproblemathand.

What’s relevant here is that, again, the bestmethod to use depends on thepersonandthecircumstances.AsIsaycontinuouslythroughoutthisbook,it isimportantforyoutoexperimenttolearnwhichwillworkbestforyou,rightnowatthismomentinyourlife.Thatmaybetovisualizetheoutcomeyoudesire,orthepathtoit,orboth.Youreallydohavetoexperimenttofindout.

TheLotteryAndTheStockMarket

WhenIsharedtheseconceptswithmyfather,thefirstthinghedidwastrytouse them on the stock market. When it didn’t work, he assumed that thesemethodswouldneverworkforhim.OvertheyearsI’velearnedthatthistypeofthingisprettycommonforpeopletodo,andisgenerallynotwhatyoushouldtry

whenyou’refirstlookingto‘prove’thattheformuladoesordoesn’twork.[20]

Likemostthings,theformulatakespractice.Intoday’shecticworld,chancesareeventherelaxationstepswilltakesometimeforyoutomaster.

Attempted manifestations that involve systems where a large number ofpeoplearepumpingintheirownintentareprobablynotthebestplaceforyoutostartpracticing.Peoplewhohavestockoroptionsgenerallywantthemtomoveinacertaindirection.Somearehopingitwillgoup,othersthatitwillgodown.Youcanseehowtheirconflictingdesirescouldeasilycanceleachotherout,orproduceamuchgreatereffectforonedirectionortheother.

There’s also a larger sea of people who don’t directly own stock but areplacing intent towards each public company. These might be analysts,employeesofthecompany,competitorsofthecompany,andsoforth.Notonlyisthatalotofintent,it’salotofconflictingintent.Chancesareyou’renotgoingtobeabletomakemuchofadentinitwhenyou’rejuststartingout,butyoucantry. Trying is always fun, just be realistic about your chances of pulling offsomethingsodifficult.Itwouldbeashametogetdiscouragedbeforeyouhaveachance to realize the amazing impact that the formula canmake in your life.Otherpeople’sdreamsanddesirescanbeverypowerfulstumblingblockswhenitcomestopowerofintent!

ResponsibleUse

It is important to realize you cannot use the formula without taking oncertainresponsibilities.Oneofthecorestepsintraditionalformsoftheformula,suchas theHAritefromthePolynesianspiritualsystemknownasHuna, is to

carefullyconsideryourrequesttoensurethatitdoesnoharm.[21]

Whileitisnotpossible to consider every consequence, youmightwant to keep this inmindwhen planning your goals. You can, for example, add the intent to minimizeadversely affecting others to your visualizations. Some spiritual and religioussystems that have traditionally incorporated all or part of the formula evenincludeadditional intent that thingshappen“for thehighestgood”ofeveryone

involved.[22]

There are no shortage of ways for you to achieve your goalswithoutsomeoneelsehavingtopayapriceforthem.

As mentioned, thistraditioncontainsa ritualcalled theHArite that isverysimilar to the formulayou’re reading here. A great Western adaptation of it comes from long-time

practitionerVaughnBoon.[24]

There are several commonlyheardviewpoints regarding the importanceofdetailedvisualizations.Somesuggestthatthebrainand/orsubconsciousportionsofourmindcannotdiscriminatebetweensomething that is realandsomethingthat is imagined, provided it is imagined with sufficient detail. From thestandpointofthebrain,moreandmoreevidenceforthisseemstobebuildingup

fromneuroscientistslikeJeffreySchwartz.[25]

Schwartzisaresearchprofessorwhoisonthevanguardofusingfunctionalmagneticresonanceimaging(fMRI)toshowthatmentaleffort/forcecanproducephysicalchanges in thebrain.Heandotherdistinguishedresearchersareat thecenterofaparadigmshift that istakingplaceinneuroscience.

Others argue that the subconscious mind seems to have quite a bit ofsuggestiveevidencebehindit.Themostcommonlyheardconceptregardingthesubconsciousmind fromapowerof intent standpoint is that it is some sortofdatabank we cannot directly and fully access with the conscious parts of our

mind.[26]

Portionsofitaresaidtocontrollargelyinvoluntaryfunctionslikeour

breathingandheartrate.[27]

Becausethesetypesofcontrolsseemtobesimple

regulationcycles,somebelievethisishowthesubconsciousmindoperates.[28]

Essentially these people argue that the subconscious stores patterns (habits,beliefs,andsoforth)thatareconstantlyplayinginthe‘background’andhaveastrongeffectonourreality.

Some examples of this are found in research relating to hypnotherapy.[29]

Therearealsoquiteafewspiritual traditionslikeHunathatsuggest thekeyto

influencingrealitywiththemindliesinthecomplicityofthesubconscious.[30]

Even todaypsychology researchershave ragingdebatesover concepts like the

Anotherargument for thebenefitsofdetailedvisualizationcomes from theconceptknownas the ‘lawof attraction.’This is onemodern extensionof theNewThoughtmovementthatoriginatedinthelate1800’sandearly1900’s.Theidea, quite simply, is that what you think becomes real and that there are avariety of contributing factors that can make this more effective. Notsurprisinglypeoplewhobelieve this concept typically stress the importanceofcarefullyselecting thoughtsandvisualizations.Whenyou look into thehistoryof this movement and the people who originally advocated it, the evidence

seemsspotty.[32]

But,theseideashavepersistedinawidevarietyofforms,and,inlargepartourresearchintoandtestingofthemiswhatledtoustouncovertheformula.

Needless to say, aside from theCenter, therehasbeenvery little scientificinterestinexaminingconceptslikethis.Anexhaustivesearchcanturnupsomepotentialexamplesofit,though,inthingslikecertaininterpretationsofquantum

physics.[33]

It’s important to be reminded that these types of scientificresearchers typically don’t cross the line into linking their conclusions toconceptssuchasthe‘lawofattraction.’

Justaswiththesubconsciousmind,wecanfindmanyreligiousandspiritual

traditions thathintat concepts related to the lawofattraction.[34]

These ideashavealsobeenpopularfordecadesinthepublicpersonalgrowthandself-help

literature.[35]

The ideahasbeen re-popularized in recentyearsbyTheSecret,

and ina seriesofbooksbyEstherandJerryHicks.[36]

At thevery least, it isinteresting that somany different sources and traditions converge around thisconcept.

Thebestwaytothinkaboutdoingahighlydetailedvisualizationistotrytodeeplyimmerseyourselfinyourcurrentenvironment.Takeamomentandlookaround.Considerallof the things thatyounormally tuneout.Nowcloseyoureyesanddothesamewiththesoundsaroundyou.Payattentiontoeachofyoursenses in turn.Whatdoesyourskinandbodyfeel like? Ifyou’resittingdowntherewillbeadifferencebetweentheareayou’resittingonandotherareasofyourbody.Therewillalsobetemperaturedifferencesbetweenareasthatareandaren’tcoveredbyclothing.Youhaveatasteinyourmouththatyou’reprobablyignoring as you read this. Your current location is bringing you smells thatyou’veprobablybeentuningout.

Theideaistobecomeawareofasmanydetailsaboutthepresentasyoucan,andincorporateeachasclearlyaspossibleinyourvisualization.Ifyou’retryingto visualize a new car using this method, you should try to include as manydetailsaspossible.Manyyearsago,a friendofminewho taughtHunaclasses

gave me a very good example of detail oriented visualization.[37]

He haddecidedhewantedanewcar.

He set about carefully constructing a highly detailed visualization.He sawthecarsittinginhisdriveway.Hevividlyimagineditwithalltherightoptions,colors,andeverythingelsehewantedinthiscar.Healsoincludedthedetailsoftheday.Thewaythesunlightlooked,theoutsidetemperature,thebirdssingingand other environmental sounds, and the time of day he came home anddiscoveredit.Heevenincludedwhathewasthinkingandfeelingashefirstsawthecarsittinginhisdriveway.

Notlongafterhecompletedperforminghisversionoftheformula(theHArite)hecamehometofindtheexactconditionshe’dvisualizedincludingthecarin his driveway. It even had a temporary license plate showing it had a newowner! While carefully inspecting it he suddenly realized that although hisvisualizationwasquitethorough,therewasonethingheforgottovisualize…hisnameon the title!As it turnsout, the carhad just beenpurchasedby a friendwho was visiting his roommate. Although his exact visualization came true,downtothelastrequesteddetail,attheendofthedayhedidn’tgetwhathetrulywanted from the situation.Thiswasoneofhis first testsof theHAriteand itserved as a powerful lesson! In case you are wondering, he didn’t repeat thevisualizationaftermaking this ‘minor’adjustment. Instead,afterall thiseffort,hedecidedthathisgoalwasmisplacedandthathedidn’tneedthis typeofcar

Details?WhyBother?

There are plenty of people who see stories like the previous one asproblematic. They tend to place less emphasis on getting every specific detailrightandmoreongettingacrossthecorenatureofwhattheywant.“Afterall”,theyargue,“howcanyoupossiblybecomeawareofallthesensoryinputfromyourcurrentenvironment?Mostpeoplecanonlyremainawareofsmallamountsofitinanygivenmoment,sohowmuchmorethanthatcantheyreasonablybeexpectedtovisualize?”

Of course, there are people who can become aware of a huge number ofdetails.Ioftenfindthisistrueformathematiciansand,perhapsnotcoincidently,the car story above involved a personwith amathematics background.Othershavemoredifficultyaddingalotofdetailtotheirvisualizationsandsomeevenhavedifficultyvisualizingatall.LikemostpeopleI’msomewhereinbetween,butIcantellyouthatthemajorityofpeopleIknow(includingme)saythatthemore you practice visualization the better you get at it. It seems to be one of

thosethingsyoucanbuildupwithexercise.[38]

Usingtheformulacanbeverygoodpractice.Unlike standardvisualization itprovidesvery tangible feedbackregardinghowwellyou’redoing.

You’reprobablywonderingwhatyoushouldfocusonifit’snotdetails.Thereality,ofcourse,isthatyouwillalwaysfocusonsomelevelofdetail.Itcanbehelpfultolimitwhatyoudovisualizetowhatismosteffectiveforyou.Thenextseveral sections will discuss this in more depth but let me give you a quickoverviewfirst.

Like everyone else you view the world through your own filters, sobecomingawareofthesefilterscanbeveryhelpful.Asmentioned,visualizationisused tocommunicatewhatyouwant.Frommyexperience it seems that thecloser you can match the way your mind is normally used to receive andrecognize information fromoutside stimuli, themoreeffectiveyouruseof theformulawillbe.Itseemsasthough,at least inpart,youaretryingtoconvinceotherportionsofyourselftoacceptyourvisualizationinputasthesameas(orascloseaspossibleto)normalexternalsensoryinput.Forthisreasonitisimportantthatyoudonotslowdownorspeedupyourvisualizations,butratherexperiencethemat ‘normal’ speed.Researchhas shown that this ismoreeffectiveand, if

youthinkaboutit,thismakessense.[39]

PracticingSportsWithVisualization

Quite a bit of athletic training research demonstrates the power ofvisualization.Studiesshowthatathleteswhopracticeintheirmindscanimprovetheirperformanceasmuchormorethanwhentheyperformtheactualphysicalactions.Thismay seem incredible if it’s the first timeyou’rehearingabout it,

butthisresearchhasbeenwidelyacceptedandusedforanumberofyears.[40]

Many times I’ve shared this information with my friends who participate insports and received great feedback on the effectiveness of the technique for a

widerangeofsports,evenbowling![41]

The benefits of properly executed visualization do not end there. Mentalpractice can even produce increases in physical strength! In a 1992 studyparticipants who only used visualization achieved a 22% increase in strength

versusa30%increaseforthosewhoactuallyexercised.[42]

Anumberofother

studiesexistthatsuggestsimilareffects.[43]

Onceyourealizethatpracticingmentallycanevenimprovethingslikeyourbowlinggame,it’snotlongbeforeyoutrytodiscoverotherthingsitmightworkfor.Littlehintsintheacademicresearchlikethisprovideexcellentsuggestionsfor what’s possible. If you consider this along with Schwartz’s research that

shows physical brain changes can occur through mental effort[44]

, and otherresearch such as visualization possibly being able to affect the bio-indicators

(brainwaves,galvanicskinresponse,heartbeat,etc.)ofothersatadistance[45]

,

theoutputofrandomnumbergenerators[46]

,andsoforth…theevidencereallybeginstostackup.

FavoriteSenses

Chancesareyouhaveadominantwayofprocessinginformationthatrelatesto your environment. In recent decades technologies such asNeuroLinguisticProgramming (NLP) have been developed that, in part, take advantage of this

fact.[47]

If you know that you primarily process information visually, youshould probably use thatmore thanother sensory inputs in your visualization.You’dwantto‘see’moreofwhatyouwantandfocuslessonothersensessuchas touch and hearing. There are exceptions to this. For example, if you’reworkingon improvingyourskiing thenasenseofhowit feels togodownthehillmaybemoreimportant,evenifyouareavisuallyorientedperson.

Oneofthebestwaystofigureoutthesensesyoufavoristosimplypaymoreattentiontoyourwordsandactions.Doyouderivemorepleasurefrompaintingsormusic?Doyouusephraseslike,“Iseewhatyoumean”(visual),“Ihearyou”(hearing)or“Ifeelforyou”(touch)?Youmightalsowanttothinkaboutwhatthemosteffectivewaysarethatyoulearn.Isitbylisteningtoalecture,orseeinga diagram on a board? Or, do you only learn when you write lots of notes?You’ll find that there aremany clues that allow you to understand how yourbrain processes and uses information. If you’re having difficulty pinpointingyourownprocess,havesomeoneelsereadthisandthenobserveyouforawhile.Iguaranteethey’llbeabletohelpyoufigureitout,andyoucandothesameforthem!

A few practice visualizations can also teach you quite a bit. A good startwouldbe to closeyour eyes and imagine something like sittingon abench inyourfavoriteparkonabeautifulsummerday.Asimpleexerciselikethiscangoa longway towardshelpingyou learnmore aboutyour current filters.Asyoubegin your practice session, pay attention towhich senses grab your attentionfirstandhowmuchinputiscomingfromeach(i.e.:2/5visual,1/5auditory,1/5touch,etc.).Youcanapplywhatyoulearnbyusingthesameproportionswhenyoucreateyourvisualizations for the formula.Manypeople find thismix justcomestothemnaturallyastheyvisualize,youmaybeoneofthem.

Atsomepointduringthesepracticesessions,youmayalsowanttoconsiderfocusingonincreasingtheinputfromeachofyoursenses.Therearethreegoodreasons todo this.First, it allowsyou topracticeandbuildmorecapability inthat sensory area. Second, it allows you to simply see how you experienceincreasesinthatsense.Third,academicresearchsuggeststhismaybebeneficialtoyouroverallabilitytovisualize.‘Mindfulness’andotherformsofmeditation

seem to produce a greater awareness of the present moment, and have beenlinkedtomoreeffectivevisualization.

Ifyoustartoutwith1/5auditory,spendafewmomentsinyourvisualizationtryingtoincreasewhatyou’rehearing.We’relimitedinthenumberofthingswecanfocusonineachmoment,soyoumaywanttocloseyoureyes(thusreducingthevisualinput)duringyourvisualizationinordertofocusmoreonthesoundsaroundwhereveryou’reimaginingyouare.Remembertoremainrelaxed.Don’tpushit.Asalwaysseekwhatfeels‘better,’‘right,’or‘natural.’

Whatyou’retryingtodetermineishowmuchyoucanvisualizeatonceandstill remain focused and relaxed. Pushing your visualization beyond what iscomfortablecancauseyoutodoubtyourselfandyourabilitytosuccessfullyusetheformula.Ifthishappens,justeasebackintowhatfeelsnatural.Onceyoufindwhat’scomfortable,makeamentalnoteofwhathappenedandhowyoubroughtyourselfoutofit.Thiscapacityiswhatyouhavetoworkwith,atleastinitially,increatingyourvisualizations.Remainconfidentthatitisjustrightforyouandexactlywhatyouneedatthistime.

WhatToActuallyVisualize

We’vetalkedalotaboutvisualization,butsofarhaven’tcoveredwhatyoushouldfocusonwhilevisualizing.Hereagain,thereareseveraldifferentschoolsof thought.Let’s sayyouhave togiveapresentation toagroupofpeople.Atleastone‘supersuccessful’powerofintentadvocatesuggeststhatyoumentally

visualizeasmuchofthepresentationaspossible,andseeitgoingverywell.[48]

Otherssuggest that ignore theprocessandfocusonyourdesiredoutcome.[49]

Asyousawpreviously,myadvice is toplaywitheachof theseandseewhichworksbestforyou.

Using ‘end result’ type goals and visualizations allows you to reach foroutcomes that you have absolutely no idea how to accomplish. Not knowinghowitwillunfoldallowsthedetailstobefilledinasyouprogresstowardsthem.It is similar to the concept that is seen inmany religions such asChristianity

whereadherentsareencouragedtoturnthingsovertoGod.[50]

Another benefit to taking this approach is that it doesn’t limit the path toyourdesiredoutcome.Ifyouvisualizetheprocessthatyouwanttooccur,you’reexcludingawiderangeofpossibilities,includingmanyyoucan’tforesee.Itcanbe much more rewarding to leave the path open and place an intent in thevisualization thatdescribes thecharacteristicsofwhatyou’d like toexperiencealongtheway.

To continue the car example, youmight visualize the car as already yoursandincludea‘rememberingback’feelingregardinghowitarrived.Thisfeelingcouldbeasenseofgratitudeforalltheamazingandpositiveexperiencesthatledtofindingit,howrapidlyitcame,howjoyoustheexperiencewas,andsoforth.Youshouldhavealreadydecidedonthetypesofemotionsandexperiencesyouwantinyourlifewhiledecidingonyourgoals,sojustplugtheminhere.Somemightwantactionandadventure,otherspeaceandtranquility.

Whateveryouwant,myrecommendationistobesureyouindicatethatyouwant it to arrive in a positive and beneficial way. This is an importantstipulation, as the formula itself seems to be neutral regarding how things aredelivered.A friend ofmine once used a version of the formula tomanifest aspecificamountofmoney.Whilehereceiveditashortwhilelater,unfortunatelyitarrivedintheformofaworkman’scompcheckfromaninjuryhesufferedat

his job.[51]

Obviously you want to try to avoid things like this! I generally

include the intent that things arrive “in a positive way, as I define it” in myvisualizations.

Evenifyoudiscoverthatyoupreferoutcomeorientedgoals,somethingsdolendthemselvestoprocessorientedgoals.Thepreviousdiscussionofpracticingsportsmentallyisanexcellentexamplethatissupportedbyscientificresearch,aswas themidterm test example.Otherexamples include things like speakingengagementsandmeetings.Mentallyrehearsingthesemomentbymomentwithvisualization seems tomake a big difference. I’ve done a lot of teaching andhavealsousedthismethodtorehearseentirecourseswithgreatsuccess.

The contrast between these approaches also leads us to an additionalconsideration:shouldyoufocusonshort-termorlong-termgoals?Asyoumightsuspect,therearepeoplewhoarguethisbothways.Somerecommendcreatingalist ofgoals that representwhatyouwouldultimately like tohavemanifest inyour life,othersfocusmoreonshort-termgoalsandbuildupto the long-term,

somefocusonboth.[52]

Itdoesn’ttakemuchtositdownandwritealistoflong-term goals and timelines and tuck it away, if you want to try a very simpleattempt at long-term manifestation! As with everything else, I suggest youexperimentandseewhatworksbestforyou.

EverythingChanges

Something interesting that I’ve noticed over time is techniques that didn’twork for me 15 years ago might work well today. Each of us is a dynamicsystemthatchangesovertime.Thesechangesseemtoincludedifferentwaystheformulacanbeimplemented.Letmegiveyouanexample.

Around1990Iborrowedabookfromafriendthatwasessentiallyablendof

Hunaandsomeotherspiritualpractices.[53]

Thebookcontainedaspecificsetofvisualizationsthatseemedwellsuitedtoachallengethatwasinmylifeatthattime,soIusedthem.Theydidn’tworkformeatall.OvertheinterveningyearsIencountered the methods again on several occasions, sometimes from peoplewhowereusingthemsuccessfully,andIperiodicallygavethemanother(alwaysunsuccessful)try.

In2006IwaslisteningtosomeaudioCD’sfromawell-knownNLPtrainerand during a section of his training learned he was using this type of

visualization.[54]

I respected this person’s work, so I decided to give theconceptsyetanothertry.ThistimeIfoundthattheyworkedgreatforme.ThisisoneofmanyexamplesIcouldgiveyouthatshowstheimportanceofremainingopenandconstantlyexperimentingwithdifferentwaysofapplyingtheformula.

Chapter5Emotion

Publicbooksandothermaterialsthatrelatetopowerofintentofteninferthat

emotion is the power source behind the formula. At this point I don’t thinkanyonereallyunderstandswhyitmayworkthisway,orevenifitdoes,butthereseem to be a lot of theories. It does seem likely that providing a sensory richvisualization thatmatches your normal filters (see the previous chapter) alongwith the corresponding emotionsmay provide a realistic and complete picturethatyourmindcanaccept.

Another way to use emotionwith the formula is to focus on positive and

pleasurablefeelingswhilevisualizing.[55]

AccordingtoCandicePertandotherleading researchers key sections of our brain have significant numbers ofreceptorsthatareassociatedwithpleasure,suchasthepre-frontalcortexwhere

much of our higher thought occurs.[56]

Visualization activatesmany of thesesameportionsofthebrainandit’snotoutofthequestionthatgeneratingthesetypesofemotionscouldassistinenrichingthevisualizedstates.

MakingThemPositive

Becauseyouare focusingonwhatyoudesire theemotionsyouuseshouldgenerallybepositive.Whilenegativeemotionscanbeusedsuccessfullywiththeformula, theyaren’tespeciallyhealthy foryouemotionallyorphysicallyand I

don’t recommend them.[57]

There are well-known individuals like JoeMcMoneagle who are known for using negative emotions such as anger, butMcMoneagle also notes that this was probably a contributing factor to him

havingmultiple heart attacks, beginning at age 39![58]

I recommend that youconsiderfocusingonpositiveemotionsduringyourvisualizations.

ActuallyFeel

It’s important tonote thatyoudon’t justvisualizeyourselfashaving theseemotions.Youneedtoactuallygeneratethemwithinyourbodywhiledoingthevisualizations.Ifwearetryingtoconvincesomelevelofourmindthatwhatwewantiseitheralreadyrealorhighlydesirable,itiseasytoseewhythiscouldbeanimportantcomponent.TheCenter’sresearchshowedthat theemotionalpartof the formulaappears to relyonyouphysically experiencing theemotions asyou do your visualizations. This may be difficult for those of you who aredetachedfromyouremotions.

Ifyouhavedifficultyexperiencingemotionspayattentiontowhatproducespositivefeelingswithinyouasyougoaboutyourday.Justbecauseyou’renotfocused on your emotions doesn’t mean you aren’t actually feeling happy,excitedandsoforth.Whenyounoticeoneoftheseemotionalstates,analyzethesensations it produces andwhere they are locatedwithin your body.Thiswillallowyou to increasingly reproduce theemotionalstatebysimplyreproducingthosesensations.

Youcanalsoreachbackintoyourpastfortimeswhenyoufeltthesetypesofemotions.Perhapsitwaswhenafavoriteteamwonabiggame,orduringyourwedding.Weall havemanypositive emotional experiences that canbedrawnfrom. Take a few moments and try to discover yours. If you really havedifficultyinthisareaitmightbeagoodideatopickupabookfromtheactingworld.Actorshavetobeabletocallupemotionsondemandforascenethatistotallyimaginaryandthisisskilltheyhavelearned.

Needlesstosay,theeventthatproducesthepositiveemotiondoesn’thavetobereal.Wecanallthinkofthingsinourmindwhichproducedifferentemotions.This is another useful example of theV+E portion of the formula.When youhave a thought that produces an emotional response you’re probably alsoimagining something that produces that response. It could be something assimple as looking forward to a vacation andwhat you’ll be doing during thattime.

Onceyouhavegotten in touchwithemotions inyourcurrent,previous,orimaginary experiences it becomes much easier to generate them on demand.Oftentheeasiestwayistojuststartpracticinghowtheymakeyoufeel.Formethisoftenrelatestomybody.Eachemotionfeelsdifferentinmybody.Somearefaster, others slower. Some feel light, others heavy. There are all kinds ofattributes that you can focus on that can help define them.Over time practice

allowsyoutobeabletoexperienceanemotionalstateasawholeandreproduceitassuch.Manyofyouarealreadyabletodothis.

If you’re really having difficulty with this you might consider using apopular technique fromNLP to ‘anchor’ the feeling.Asimpleexampleof thismight be to rapidly touch your thumb and forefinger together while you areexperiencingtheemotion.It’sprobablyagoodideatousemorethanonethingwhichproducestheemotionsfortheanchor,sothatyouanchortheemotionsandnot justaspecificmemory.Once theanchor is inplace,youshouldbeable totouchyourforefingerandthumbtogetherrapidlywhilenotthinkingaboutanyoftheseexperiencesandhavetheassociatedemotionwellupwithinyou.

GetReal

AsI’vementioned,usingpositiveemotionisonlyonewayofincorporatingthis portion of the formula into visualizations. Another way of using the “E”portionoftheformulaistogeneraterealisticemotions.Thesemay(ormaynot)still be positive, butwould bemore specific. The idea here is to generate theemotions you believe would be experienced if the situation was actuallyoccurring.Goingback to the car example from theprevious chapter, basicallyyou’dwanttoaskyourselfwhatemotionsyouwouldbeexperiencingwhenyoureceived the car, or as an owner of the car, depending on your visualization.Howwoulditactuallymakeyoufeel?

One car related visualization is to see yourself as the owner of the car:drivingit,washingit,andsoforth.Foreachofthesevisualizedsituationstrytofocusontheassociatedemotions.Forexample,youmightfeelveryhappyandcontentwhiledrivingsuchaniceautomobile.

You might also consider visualizing (safely with your eyes open!) whiledriving.Overlayyourvisualizationanditsaccompanyingemotionsontopoftherealityofdrivingyourcurrentvehicle.Seethehoodofthecaryoudesireasyoulookoutthefrontwindow,feeltheemotionsyoubelieveyou’dbeexperiencingifyouwereactuallydrivingthatcar,andsoforth.

If possible, youmay even be able to rent this type of car to add physicalrealitytoyourvisualization.Thisallowsyoutogetinthesametypeofcarandexperienceittactilelywhilegeneratingandfeelingtheemotionsthatmatchyourothervisualizations.Youcanuseanyoftheabovealongwiththeoptionsyou’dprefer,thevariouscolorcombinationsyou’dfindacceptable,thepricerangeyouwouldbehappywith,mileage,andsoforth.

You can also use physical reinforcement with process-based visualization.Thismayincludetakingphysicallevelstepsthatwouldbenecessaryifyourgoalwas currently unfolding. For example, if your goal is to obtain a new car butyou’re not financially able to, this might include going to the car dealer,gatheringliterature,takingatestdrive,engaginginnegotiations,andsoforthasifyouareactuallygoingtopurchaseit.

ReinforcingResonance

Whilewecan’talwaysrentorgaintemporaryaccesstowhatwe’retryingtomanifest,my feeling is that it’s very helpful to try.Our research showed thatthereseems tobesomething to theconceptofgroundingyourgoals in reality.Youmaynotbeabletodosomethinglikerentthecaryouaretryingtomanifest.Anotherwaytopracticethisistobeawareofthingsthatcomeupwhichseemtobe related to what you want. When you notice them feel grateful that yourmanifestation is happening. As with any emotion involving the formula, youshouldactuallygeneratethisemotionwithinyou.

Thepreviousexample isespeciallyeasy todo ifyourgoal isemotional. Ifyourgoalsincludecertainformsofhappiness,forexample,simplybeonguardforwhentheymanifestinyourlife.Whenyounoticethem,reallytrytogetintothem,enjoythemandbegratefulforthem.I’vefoundthatthemoreIdothis,themorefrequentlytheemotionwillmanifest.

Continuingwiththecartheme,letmegiveyouamorephysicalexampleofthisprinciplethatIbetyou’veexperienced.Howmanytimeshaveyouboughtorbecome interested in a typeof car,only to startnoticing the same styleof cararound you much more as you drive? From what I can tell, this happens topractically everyone. Some believe that these carswere always there and youjustweren’tnoticing them.Othersbelieve thatyou’vecomemoreclosely intoresonancewiththattypeofcarandareattractingmorefrequentencounterswithit. Just as this canhappenwith thenumberof cars it also seems toworkwithemotionsandjustabouteverythingelse.

Aswithmanyoftheotherthingsinvolvingpowerofintent,thereisn’tmuchscientificevidencesuggestinghowthismightwork.Ifyou’reinterested,youcanlookupwhatsomeoftheleadingthinkershavehadtosayaboutsynchronicity.[59]

Anotherinterestingresearchareaisthepsychologyofluck,whichishighly

relatedtotheconceptofsynchronicity.[60]

TheprimaryresearcherinthisareaisRichardWiseman.Afteryearsofresearch,Wisemansummarizeshisfindingsasfollows:

“Lucky people generate their own good fortune via four basic

principles.They are skilled at creating andnoticing chance opportunities,make lucky decisions by listening to their intuition, create self-fulfillingprophesies via positive expectations, and adopt a resilient attitude that

transformsbadluckintogood.”[61]

His assertions are bolstered by the fact that he seems to be able to take

people who insist they are very unlucky, and make them feel lucky. WhenWiseman’s research and claims are examined, there appears to be very littledifferencebetweenhisdefinitionofluckandsynchronicity.

AttheCenterwedeterminedthatthereseemstobesomevaliditytotheideathatwhatwe’retryingtodoisconvinceourselvesthatwhatwedesireisalreadya reality. This appears to have the ability to impact what we attract andexperience.Onepossible reason for thismaybe that it increasesour everydayawarenessofoccurrencesthatmightleadtowhatwedesire,asWiseman’sworksuggests.

His research also suggests the significance of connectivity. It shows theimportance of varying your routines and the impact this can have on creatingadditionalopportunitiestoconnectwithhelpfulpeopleandevents.Manywritersinthepowerofintentmarketplacetrytotakethisfurtherbyreferringtoconceptswithinmodernphysicsthattheyfeelsuggesteveryoneisinterconnectedatsome

level.[62]

Evensomeacademicwritershavealludedtothispossibleconnectionofphysicsandpowerof intent typeconcepts,butat themoment it’sprimarily

justspeculation.[63]

In areas like thiswhere rigorous research is lacking, thebestwecando isexamine the popular (non-academic) literature, try to find some clues buriedwithin academic research, and conduct experiments. This is exactly what theCenterworkedveryhardtodo.Bygivingyoualloftherelevantinformation,aswell as observations on how we and others have experimented with thesetechniques, you shouldbe able to easilyplay aroundwith themand findwhatworksbestforyou.

Entanglement

There isaprinciple inquantummechanics referred toasentanglement thatmay also relate to the previous concept. Many physicists don’t accept thatentanglement is a relevant concept at themacro level of our everyday reality.Among the most qualified quantum physicists that number goes down evenfurther.Within that crowd there are essentially twogroups.One that hasbeentrained to use the mathematics involved for direct application, and a muchsmaller group that bothworks themath and theorizes aboutwhat it allmightmean.Among the lattergroup there are some respectedphysicistswhodonotruleouttheideaofentanglementworkingatmacroaswellasquantumlevelsofreality.

Thebasicconceptofentanglementisthatoncetwothingscomeintocontact

witheachother, they remain linkedat adistance.[64]

This iswhereEinstein’swell known phrase, “spooky action at a distance” comes from. Quantummechanicsfocusesonthisfromaverymicro levelofreality,suchaswith twoelectrons. However, macro level experiments have been performed in recent

yearsthatcertainlyseemsuggestiveofentanglement.[65]

A good experimental example from outside of the physics community isCleveBackster’sgroundbreakingworkthatappearstoshowyourcellsareableto communicate at a distance. He took living cell samples from researchsubjects,usedvery sensitiveequipment tomeasure their electrical emanations,and discovered that these readingswould become agitated from their baselinewhen the person they came from was going through something stressful orhighlyemotional.Even if thepersonwashundredsofmilesaway, therewasa

near instantaneouseffecton thecellsClivewasmonitoring.[66]

Wecould saythatthecellsandthebodytheycamefromwerestillentangled.

How does this relate to the formula? Perhaps only indirectly. From myexperienceitseemslikeoneofthethingswe’retryingtodoisbecomeentangledwithourgoals.WeuseV+Etoestablishastrongconnectionwithwhatwewantandthensupplementitwiththingslikemycarrentalexample.AttheveryleastIsuggestthatit’sanotherveryhelpfulwayforyoutothinkoftheV+Eportionoftheequation.

Don’tWorry,BeHappy

As you’ll recall, the other perspective on how to use emotion within theformula stresses the use of a positive (instead of realistic) emotion withvisualization.Let’stakeeverythingwe’velearneduptothispoint,anddiveevendeeperintothisconcept.Itdoesnotrequirethatyoumatchtheemotionsofthesituationyouarevisualizing.Inthepreviouschapterwediscussedtheideathatyou could make your visualizations very detailed or less so. We also talkedabouttheoptionofmakingthemprocessorientedoroutcomeoriented.

The use of positive, rather than realistic (which may also be positive),emotions is very helpful for less detailed visualizations that are outcomeoriented.Whenyou’reusingmoredetailed,processorientedvisualizationsit isprobablybest tomatchyouremotionstowhatyouwouldactuallybefeelingifthevisualizationwerereality.Thisaddstotheaccuracyandrealism,whichisthewholepointofgoingtoallthatextraeffort.

Let’s look at an exampleof a less detailed, outcomeorientedvisualizationand its accompanyingemotions.Perhapsyouhave just formedanewbusinesspartnershipandyourgoal is tohaveitproduceacertainamountof incomeforyou eachmonth.Youmight create a visualization inwhichyou seeyour newpartner handing you a check for that specific amount. For the emotionalcomponent of your visualization you might generate feelings of elation orexcitementwhenthecheckishandedtoyouand/orwhenyoulookatitandseeyour name on it and the amount. You might even carry this further byvisualizing yourself joyously jumping around and even standing in a circle offriendsand familywhoareequallyexcited.Youmight seeyourselfgoaroundandgivethem‘highfives’aspartofyourexcitement.Itispossiblethatthisaddsafeelingofapprovaltothevisualization.

This example showshowyou can incorporate elements that could becomerealalongsideones thatwill likelyneverhappen.Yourbusinesspartnergivingyouacheck,youlookingatit,andsoforthwouldbeanexampleofsomethingthatmightactuallyhappen.Ifacheckisnotinvolved,youcouldeasilysubstituteseeing yourself looking at a payment line in your online bank account or anyother way that you might conceivably receive the money. Your friends andfamilystandingaroundinacircleasyoureceivethecheckandgivingyouhighfiveswillprobablynothappeninactualreality.Howevertechniqueslikethiscanbe used very effectively with less detailed visualizations both to stressimportanceandincreasetheenergyandemotionallevelofthevisualization.This

particularvisualizationisclearlyexpressing,inageneralway,whatishopedforandempoweringitwithstrong,positiveemotion;whichisexactlywhatonetriestodowhenlessdetailedvisualizationsareused.

The emotion you employ with a visualization like this should fit yourpersonality.Iknowsomeone,forexample,whousescontentmentandasenseof

accomplishment instead of excitement.[67]

It’s justwhatworks better for her.Weallhaveourownnaturalwaysofrespondingtosituations.Ifyoudecidetousethistypeoftechnique,I’drecommendthatyouexperimentemotionallyforwhatseemstoworkthebestforyou.Justremembertokeepitpositive(ifatallpossible)!

EmotionalState=Progress

There’s another interesting way to use emotion with power of intent. InrecentyearsthishasbecomeincreasinglypopularbecauseoftheHicks’books.[68]

Inadditiontoemotionbeingusedasthe“E”portionoftheformula,itcanalsobeused to tellhowyou’reprogressingwithyourmanifestation.Thebasicideaisthatemotionscanbeatwowaycommunicationtool.Whiletheformulauses them toempowermanifestation, theycanalsobeused to seehowyou’redoingwiththeformulainrelationtoyourgoals.

Takeamoment,closeyoureyes,relax,andthinkofoneofyourgoals.Justdothevisualizationportion,don’ttrytogenerateanemotiontogowithit.Justgoaheadandgivethisatryrightnow…

Chancesareeventhoughyoudidn’tgenerateanemotion,oneormorearosewithin you. The basic principle is that the more positive this emotion is, thecloser you are to manifesting your goal. An uncomfortable emotion can belettingyouknowthatyouhaven’tyetconvincedyourselfthatyourgoalsshouldbecomeareality.

This is a very simple check that anyone can perform. Very often thisnaturally occurs between the moment you first do a visualization (“V”) andwhenyoubegintogenerateyourdesiredemotions(”E”).Beingawareofwhatthatgapfeelslikeemotionallycanbeveryhelpfulingaugingwhereyou’reatintheprocess.

As with the other parts of the formula, there are competing schools of

thoughton“R”(release).Onegroupstronglybelieves thatonceyou’veplacedyour intent (V+E) you should put what you want out of your mind until itmanifests.Theotherbelieves thatyoushouldcontinuetousetheformulauntilwhatyoudesirecomestopass. In thischapterwe’ll lookmoredeeplyat thesetwopointsofview.

As with the other differing viewpoints in this book, each of theseperspectivesisvalid.Youshouldexperimentandseewhichworksbestforyou.There are successful formula practitioners on both sides of the fence, andstraddlingit.

Certainty=Belief+Expectation

It’s often expressed that the most important part of the “R” process isachievinganinternalknowing/beliefthatwhatyou’veaskedforisalreadyyours.TheV+Eprocessfocusesonseeingitasyoursrightnow,butthe“R”partoftheprocessiswhatsolidifiesthisfocusasabelief.Whetheryoujustdotheformulaonetimeormanytimesforagivengoal,thesuccessfulcompletionofthisstepinvolvesdeeplyfeelingandexperiencingthisexpectation.Upto thispointyouhavedefinedyourgoal,createdapresent-timevisualizationforit,andembodiedthe appropriate emotions while holding the visualization in yourmind.Whenusingtheformula,youtransitiontothisstepbylettingV+Efadefromyourmindand generating/experiencing a deep sense of certainty that what you desire isalreadyyours.

SetItAndForgetIt

One view holds that you should set your intent and not think again aboutwhatyouaskedforuntilitmanifests.Whilethiscanbedifficultforsomepeople,theconceptitselfisreflectedinarangeoftraditions.Insomesensethe“Amen”at theendofaprayer ismeant toserve thispurpose. Itbasicallysays,“Thankyou, this communication is now concluded.” Other spiritual practices containsimilarmethods.“Sobeit”and“Itisdone”areothercommonreleasephrases.Whensayingthingslikethis,thegeneralideaistoplaceastrongclosingintentthatwhatyouwant tohaveoccur isalreadydoneandon itsway.This typeofexpectation is something seen inmost types of release and you’ll find severalexamplesofitinthischapter.

Anotherexcellentexampleofthistypeofreleaseoccursovertime.I’veseen

manysituationswherepeoplecreatealistofgoalsbutforgetallaboutthem.[69]

Years later they find the list while cleaning the house (for example) and arestunnedathowmanyofthethingshavecometrue.Inmostcasestheyhadverylittle,ifany,memoryregardingwhatwasonthelist.

TurningItOver

At its core, releasing involves ‘deciding’ to mentally and emotionally letsomethinggo.Forsomepeoplethisisthemostdifficultpartoftheformula.Forothers it’s the easiest. If you find it difficult to believe you can achieve yourgoal, this stepmaybe a challenge for you. I don’t recommend trying to forceyourselfintobelieving.It’sverylikelythisforcingwillsimplykeepyoufocusedonyourdoubts.

One thing you might try is to ‘turn it over’ and put it out of your mind.Dependinguponyourbeliefsystem,thismaymeanturningtherequestover(orsurrenderingthesituation)toGod,theUniverse,thecollectiveconsciousnessofhumanity,orwhateverelseyoumaybecomfortablewith.Honorwhateveryourbeliefsare;beliefcanbeapowerfultoolforthisstepoftheformula.

If this typeof thingdoesn’tappeal toyou,youmayfinditmorehelpful tosimplyadoptareleasedattitudeabout itall. Insteadofallowingyouremotionsand desires to keep you focused on what you want, try to simply but deeplyconvince yourself that “maybe thiswillwork, ormaybe itwon’t” and just goabout your day without dwelling on it. This is actually one of my favoritemethodsofrelease.IoftentrytogettoaplaceofdeepinternalreleasewhereIcangenuinelybelieve that, “If it happens, great! If not, that’s ok too.”Thingsseemtocomeveryquicklywhenthisisinternalized.

Release…Repeat

Anotherviewpointregardingreleaseisthat,whileyoushoulddoitattheend

oftheformula,itcanbebeneficialtousetheformulamorethanonce.[70]

Someadvocate repeating the formula until what you desire manifests. One possibleissuewiththisisthatit iseasytoaccidentallyintroduceslightchangestoyourvisualizationsorgoalsfromonerepetitiontothenext.Infact,overtheyearsI’vecometowonderifthe‘totallyforgetaboutit’versionofthetechniqueisactuallyasafetymechanismtopreventconflictingintentfromaccidentallyaffectingtheprocess.

Whenmostpeople thinkaboutwhat theywant, theyoften thinkabout it innegativeways.Thiscanincludesimplynoticingtheyhavenotyetreachedtheirgoal. Because the formula seems to be based in part on the fact that we’reconvincingourselvesthatwhatwewantisalreadyareality,thiswouldbeadealbreakerforthewholeprocess.Theconflictbetweendoingtheformulaundertheassumption that what you’ve asked for is already a reality, and then laternoticing that it isn’tmay have some sort of cancellation effect. So toomightslightchangesinyourvisualizationorintentfromonerepetitionoftheformulatothenext.Whatbetterwaytopreventthisthantotellpeoplethattheyhavetogetgoodatputtingitoutoftheirmindsandonlydotheformulaasingletime?Oncetheydo,presto…nomoreconflicts!

Thedownsideofthisapproachisthatreinforcementseemstobehelpfulforsomepeople.Doingtheformulaonce justdoesn’tseemtoworkwell for theseindividuals. Like everything else this may change over time but for some,possibly including you, this is true right now.So, repeating the formula againandagainuntilwhatyouwantcomestopassprovidesthisreinforcement.Ifweareinfactworkingtoconvinceourselvesthatwhatwedesireisalreadyareality,to some extent it makes sense that this might take more than one use of theformula.

Repeat,Repeat,Repeat…

I’mnotsurehowrealisticitisforyoutobeexpectednottothinkaboutwhatyou’re trying tomanifestafteryou’vecompleted the formula.Mostofushavepretty undisciplinedminds.Maybe if you’vemeditatedor performed intensivementaltrainingforanumberofyearsthisisn’tanissueforyou,butfortherestofusitcanbeachallenge.Thismeansweneedtofindaneffectivewaytodealwithit.

Ibelievethatthebestwaytoaccomplishthisitistwofold.Forstarters,trytoremain conscious of what you’re trying to manifest and actively prevent anycancelling or negative thoughts about it. Eugene Maurey has a very simple

methodthatI’veusedforyearsinthisregard.[71]

Simply say “Cancel. Cancel.” in your mindanytimeyoudetectsuchathoughtasyougothroughyourday.

I believe this accomplishes two things. First these types of thoughts areusuallyemotionallychargedwhichmeansthattheyfollowtheV+Eportionsofthe formula.When they pass from your mind, they get released. All thoughtpatterns, includingnegativeones,seemtofollowtheformulaformanifestationunless they are interrupted. To make matters worse, the negative emotionsinvolvedinthesetypesofthoughtsareoftenmuchstrongerthanthoseassociatedwith a person’s positive thoughts. Fear, anger, and so forth are very powerfulandpresentinmostpeople’slives.Becauseoftheimportanceofemotionsintheformula,thismayensurethatnegativemanifestationsreceiveanadvantageoveryourpositiveonesunlesstheyareactivelycanceled.

Second,the“Cancel.Cancel.”methodclearlylabelsthepreviousthoughtasnotdesired.Thosewhobelieveinthesubconsciousmindfeelthatthisplaysanimportantroleintheformula.Thesepeoplebelievethatthesubconsciousmindlooks to the consciousmind to tell itwhat to think and how to feel, and then

storesthisinformationinpatternformforthelong-term.[73]

Ifthisturnsouttobe the case, there would be tremendous value in having labeled the negativethoughts with “Cancel. Cancel.” Regardless of if this is true, from myperspectivethemostimportantthingisthatthistechniqueimmediatelyinterruptsthenegativethoughtpattern.Thisisimportantbecausethelongeritpersiststhemoredeeplyitmaytakeholdinthebrain,makingitmorelikelytoreoccur.

Let’sreturntothequestionwhichstartedthissection,andexploretheother

itemwhich canhelp thoseof uswith less than fully-disciplinedminds. If youcan’t immediately and fully release after a single use of the formula for aspecificgoal,youwillneedtouseitmorethanonce,andpossiblycontinueuntilyougetwhatyoudesire.Ikeepsayingthingslike‘getwhatyoudesire’butbesureyouremembertoalsoincludeintentsuchas“thisorsomethingbetter.”Youhavenoideawhat’souttherethat’sbetterthanwhatyou’reaskingfor,soleavethedooropensoevengreaterthingscanflowtoyou.

There are quite a few different perspectives among those who believe inusing the formula more than once for a specific manifestation. Some, forexample,believethatyoushoulddoitonceaday,usuallyeitherinthemorningjust after waking up or in the evening just before going to sleep. Othersrecommend that you use the formula both times, because each of these timeperiodscaninvolvealteredstatesofconsciousnessinwhichyou’remuchmorerelaxed.

Your life is probably very busy. You may wake up at the last possiblemomentandnothavetimetoadequatelyrepeattheformula.Or,youmaybetootired before going to bed.Whatever the case, it’s important not to stress overthings like this. Just do your best to stick to whatever schedule, if any, youdecide to adopt. One thing I’ve found helpful is to simply remember theimportanceofwhatyouaretryingtodo.Thereareveryfewotherthingsduringthecourseofourday thatcanproducesuchdramaticeffectsonourqualityoflife.Ifyouarriveattheendofthedayandaretootiredtoworktheformula,takeamomenttoreviewwhatyouspenttimeonthatdaythatwaslessimportantandcanbeeliminatedinthefuturesoyouhavetheneededtime.

Considertheexampleofaworldclassfinancierwhoraisedhimselfupfrom

utter poverty and is a strong power of intent advocate.[74]

He practices hisversionoftheformulawheneverhehasasparemoment.Thisisagoodhabittogetintoandtryexperimentingwith.Itonlystandstoreasonthatifwe’retryingtoreinforcewhatwewant,themoreweapplyitthebetterourresultswillbe,aslongaswearemindfulofconflictingintent.Thisissimilartolearninganynewskill,themorewepracticethebetterwegetatit.

Fromanotherperspective,however,repeatingtheformulaforaspecificgoalalso reinforces it.Themore thingswe can do consciously to alter the internalbeliefswehold,thebetter.Someofthethingsmentioneduptothispointare:

It’sgenerallytiedtotheconceptofexpectingwhatyou’veasked for to come into reality.Becauseyouknow it ishappening,youhavereasontobegratefulthatithasalreadymanifestedinyourlife.Theideaistoactuallygenerateandfeelitjustasyouwouldifwhatyouareaskingforhasactuallyoccurred.

Maurey’s outstanding book has a great starter exercise that I highly

recommend.[76]

Theessential ideais tobegineachdaywithavisualizationofyourself at the end of that day reflecting on what a fantastic day it’s been.Anotherway todo this is to simply seeyourself at the endof theday feelingvery happy, content, excited, or whatever other emotion or emotions mightequatewith the kind of day you’d like to have.Needless to say you can alsoexpand thissimpleyeteffectiveexerciseandvisualizeyourselfat theendofaweek,month,year,andsoforth.

I’vesharedthisexercisewithpeopleforyears.Itwaschosenforthissectionof the book because of the amazing feedback I receive about it. The exerciseleavesthedooropenforgreatnewthingsinyourlifebecauseitdoesn’tinvolvebeingspecificaboutwhatthedayholdsforyou.Youronlyintentisthatyou’vehadagreatday,howeveryouwoulddefineit.Myfocusisonimprovingqualityof life, andover theyears I’ve come tobelieve that thismaybe theverybestexercise for beginners in this regard. That’s not to say thatmore experiencedpractitionersshouldn’tpracticeit.It’ssuchasimplewaytoimproveyourqualityoflifeforthatday.

WhenIperformthisvisualizationbeforeIgetoutofbed in themorning, Isee and feelmyself lying inbed that eveningoverwhelmedwithgratitudeandaweforalltheamazingandpositivethingsthathappenedtomethroughouttheday (V+E). Then I openmy eyes and begin my day, immediately takingmymind off the visualization (R). It probably only takes 10 seconds or so eachmorning,buttheresultsareextraordinary!

HowLongShouldISpend?

Youmay find yourself wondering just how long the process should take.There’snogoodanswertothis.Somepeoplewillcompletethewholeformulaina flash, literally just a few seconds, for each of their goals. Then use the formula on them one time and put the notebookawayuntilyoudecidesomethinginthatsetofgoalsneedstobechanged.Atthatpoint, take out the notebook, make the change, and do the formula again forthose goals. You don’t need to write anything down to use the formulaeffectively,thisisanoptionalstepthatseemstoleadtoincreasedeffectivenessforsomepeople. Itgivesyou theopportunity to really think throughwhatyouwant,whichmostofusneedtodomuchbetter.

Youcanalsousetheformulaforshortandmid-termgoals.Long-termgoalscanmakeyoufeelthatyoumightnotgetthethingsthatareimportanttoyouinthe short and mid-term. Short-term goals/visualizations are ‘in the moment’typesofsituations.

On a recent plane ride, a large muscular Russian gentleman was in themiddleseatnexttome.HewasveryfriendlybutIdecidedtousetheformulatovisualizeanendresultwhichallowedhisseattobeemptysoIcouldspreadoutabit.Not long after, the person in the aisle seatmoved to another row and theRussian gentlemanmoved to the isle.While you can plan ahead and use theformula to create situations like this in advance,wecan’t thinkof everything!Mostofuswon’t thinkof themajorityofsituations thatariseeachday,so theformulacanbeveryhandyforthesetypesofshort-termneeds.

Anothershort-termexampleisusingtheformulatogetagoodparkingspot.Many people I know use the formula to visualize great parking spots whiledriving to their destination.One friend ofmine did this but kept only gettingspotsthatwouldproduceparkingticketsorotherhassles.Eventuallyheshifted

his visualization toprotect against these typesof occurrences.[78]

It’s justmypersonal observation, but I attribute situations like this to some sort ofmentalpatternthathedidn’trealizewasoperatinginthebackground.Forsomereasonhe may associate a good parking spot with potential problems, and since hisvisualizationdidn’tinitiallyaddressthat…hegotthem!

Mid-term goals are things that are planned for and desired in advance butusually don’t fall into the category of long-term life goals. For example, youmighteventuallywanttoretiretoMadrid,Spainafteryourkidsaregrownandoutof thehouse,but in themeantimeyou’djust likeanicerhouseinNewark,NewJersey.ThenewhouseinNewarkwouldbeanexampleofamid-termgoalandtheretirementvillainSpainwouldbealong-termgoal.

Keepinmindthisisjustonewayofdoingthings.I’monlyprovidingthisasanexample;pleasefeelfreetoexperimentanddowhatisbestforyou.Itcanbea good idea to keep a separate notebook for yourmid-term goals, which youupdateandchangefrequentlyasyoudiscoverthingsyoudoanddon’twant.Trytobeconsistentinlookingateachitematleastonceadayanddoingtheformulafor it. Notice how this differs frommy recommendation for long-term goals.Mid-term goals can be done all the time unless you are someone who hassuccessusingtheformulaonlyonetimeforeachofyourgoals.Youcanusetheformula on them when you have available time, like when you’re driving orbeforeyougetoutofbedinthemorning.

Chapter8ReviewingTheSteps

Althoughthisisasmallbook,itispackedwithinformation.Thisisagreat

pointtostopandreviewthemajorhighlightsforyou.Toworktheformula,youfirst need to decide what you want. Generally it is best to think through anddefineyourshort-,medium-andlong-termgoals,buttechnicallyyoujustneedasinglegoaltobeginusingtheformula.Evengoalselectionissomethingforyoutoexperimentwithandfinetuneformaximumeffectiveness.Goalscanhaveaphysicalfocus(likeacar),anemotionalfocus(likelove),orboth.Theycanalsobehighlyspecific(averyspecifictypeofcarorlove),veryvague,oranywhereinbetween.Startwiththetypethatfeelsthebestforyouandexperimentwithitfirst.Remembertobecarefulnottomakeyourinitialexperimentstoobroad,orwiththingsthathavealotofconflictingintent…likethelottery!

The second step in the formula is relaxation. This step is important, butgenerally not one you need to spend much time experimenting with. If youalreadyhaveafavoritemethodofrelaxation,certainlyfeelfreetouseit.Ifnot,youcantryphysicallyorientedprogressiverelaxation(flexingonemusclegroupata time, then releasing it, systematically fromyour feet toyourhead)or justvisualizing/willing the relaxation of each muscle group without any physicalaction. You can also try other techniques, like deep breathing, scanning yourbodyandlookingforareasoftensiontorelax,andsoforth.Themostimportantthingistojustrelaxyourphysicalbodyasdeeplyaspossible.

With your goals and themethod of physical relaxation decided upon, it istimetoselectthecomponentsoftheformulaitself.Inotherwords,whatyouwilluseforV,E,andR.Forvisualization,thereareseveraloptions.First,youmustchoosebetweenusingoutcomeorprocess-basedvisualization.Youcanalsouseboth. Outcome-based visualization involves forming a mental image of whatyour desired outcome would look like. Process-based visualization involvesimagining yourself doing the steps leading up to your goal.To combine themboth, you can simply use process-based visualization and include an endingwhereyouseetheoutcomeashavingbeenaccomplished.Or,youcancreatetwoseparate visualizations and keep your process and outcome visualizationsseparate.

You also need to choose the level of detail youwill incorporate into yourvisualization. This will be partially guided by the level of detail contained in

youroverallgoal.Ifyoupickedavaguegoal,itwillbedifficulttouseahighlyspecificvisualizationwithit.Ifyoupickedaveryspecificgoal,youcanchooseto use any level of detail when you construct your visualization. As always,allow your intuition to guide your initial experiments and, remember, if theoptionsyouchoosehaven’tworkedafterthefirstcoupleofweeks,changethem!

Youroptionsforcreatingtheemotionalpieceoftheformularevolvearoundwhetheryouchoosetoincorporatepositiveorrealisticemotion(s).Eithercanbeused with any type of visualization. For example, an outcome-basedvisualizationcanbepairedwitheitherapositiveemotion(suchaselation)thatthedesiredgoalhascometopass,ortherealistic(presumablypositive)feelingsyouwouldexperienceifyourgoalcametrue.Thesameistrueforprocess-basedvisualizations. If you think about it, process-based visualizations paired withpositiveemotionareverysimilartoaseriesofoutcome-basedvisualizationsallstrung together.However, this isverydifferent ifyouareusing realemotions.Consider theUCLAstudyexample. It isveryunlikely that studentswhowerevisualizingthemselvesspendinghoursinthelibraryastheirdormmatespartiedawayonaFridaynightwouldpairanemotionofelationwiththeexperience.Inthiscase,theemotionsforthatpartofthevisualizationmightbemixedintermsofpositiveandnegative,andprobablynotrelatetoexcitement!

Finally, there are several decisions you have to make for the releasecomponent.Theserelatetohowmuchyouwillrelease,andhowyouwilldoit.If you choose to only do the formula once for a goal, obviously therewill beonly one release for the formal part of the formula itself. However, aswe’vediscussed, you may have difficulty keeping the desired goal out of mind,necessitatingadditional releasingas it arises.Alternatively, youmaydecide todo the formula several times, or more, for each goal, which will obviouslyinvolve releasing each time. To some extent the frequencywill relate to howwellyoucankeep thegoaloutofyourmindand theeasewithwhichyoucanbelieveyourmanifestation ishappening,sosomepeoplewillneed todomuchlessongoingreleasingthanothers.

The other aspect of releasing is how to actually do it, how to let go.Oneway,ofcourse,istosimplyputitoutofyourmind.Ifyou’reabletodothis,itmakesreleasingveryeasy!Anotheroptionistocreateafeelingofcertaintythatit will happen, using forced belief and expectation. You can also just ‘turn itover’ifyoubelieveinGod,yourhigherself,orsomethingelsethatmakesthispossible.Ifyouhavebeentrainedwithawordorphrasethatcomesasareleaseattheendofaprayerormeditation,thiscanbeuseful.Examplesinclude“amen”or“sobeit.”

I do a great deal of speaking. Sometimes at academic conferences, other

timesforthepublic.OftenI'lldobothonthesametrip.VeryearlyonIlearnedthatpeopleatmypublictalkswantedtoknowwhatwelearnedinasimpleform,andespeciallywantedtoknowhowtoimmediatelyapplyit.Includingacademicresearchdetailsinapublicpresentationwasasurefirewaytomakemostoftheroomfallasleep.

Most of the reviews for this book on services like Amazon areoverwhelminglypositive.Theresearchinthisbooktookalotoftimeandcostagreat deal of money, and it is wonderful to see it having a major impact inpeople's lives. One thing that I've noticed in the handful of less than positiveAmazon type feedback is that peoplemention theywanted to seemore of theacademicdetails.

Thishasbeenahugesurprisetomebecausepeopleoutsideoftheacademicworld never seemed to care about it in any way before. This section is anadditiontothefirstreleaseof thebookandinit Idiscussabitmoreabout theresearch...forthosewhoareinterested.Ifthat'snotyou...feelfreetoskipit!

The premise of the research conducted for this book was that significantclaimswerebeingmadeintheself-helpandpersonalgrowthmarketsbyawiderange of authors. I noticed that no one within the academic researchestablishment was looking into these claims, and felt they warrantedexamination.

Webeganwithanexhaustiveliteraturereviewoftheavailablepublications.We could discard many methods right away, because established academicresearchcontradictedthetechniquesbeingadvocated.Thosethatremainedweregrouped into categories. The most popular one or two methods from eachcategorywereselectedfortesting.

Theresearchwasconductedwithgroupsofbetween10-20individuals.Theinitialmethodologywastohaveeachgrouptestasingle,different,methodfor3months.At the end of the first period of testing itwas clear that some of themethods had not produced any changes. Other methods/groups seemed toproduce individuals that were going through very negative emotions in their

lives, which started during the research period. Others in these groups hadachievedthegoalsestablishedforthetest.Mostsawnochange.Wenotedtheseresults and began a second round of tests, which produced roughly the sameresults,andthenathirdroundofgrouptesting.

After the third roundof testing, it seemedclear that theadverseeffectswewereseeing inapercentageof theparticipantswas likely tobea resultofourexperimentalmethodologyandthemethodsbeingtested.Forethicalreasons,westoppedanyfurtherresearch.Bythispointwehadasubstantialamountofdatatoanalyzeandwebegantodothisindepth.

Asweanalyzedthedatawebegantonoticeapattern.Wedeterminedthat,whenagrouptestedamethodthatappearedtoproduceeffects:1-3participantswouldseebenefits,3-5wouldseenochange,and3-4participantswouldhavean,oftensignificant,reductioninwellbeing.

Wewouldoftenreusegroupsfromonetestingroundtothenext,oratleastkeep several group members from test to test. Participants for these types oflonger term experiments are very difficult to come by and this is a commonpractice. Because of this we were able to notice that if an individual had apositiveresultwithonemethod,s/hedidnothavepositiveresultwithanyothermethodsthattheywereassignedinothertestingrounds.

Wethoughtaboutthispattern.Themethodstestedwereverydifferentfromoneanother,andwebegan towonder if therewassomekindofpsychologicalmatching process occurring. Sowe called back in asmany of the individualswho had experienced positive results as possible, and began a new test roundthataskedthemtostartusingthemethodthatseemedtohaveproducedpositiveresultsagain.Itturnedoutthatmanyofthemhadbeenalreadydoingthissincewe terminated the previous round of testing, and they had continued toexperiencepositiveresults.Fortherest,withonlyacoupleofexceptions,theseindividualsallhadpositiveresultswhentheyagainstartedusingthemethodthathadpreviouslyworkedforthem.

Next we spotted a pattern in our notes that suggested that we coulddetermineifapersonwasgoingtohavepositiveornegativeresultsafteronlyacouple of weeks of using a method. This allowed us to resume our groupresearch,astwoweekswasnotlongenoughtoproduceseriousadverseeffects.Usingtwoweektestwindowsalsoallowedustoworkthroughahighnumberofmethods.

As individualshadpositive results, theywerepulledout from theirgroupsandaskedtocontinuetousetheirworkingmethodfromthatpointforward.Overtime,webegantonoticethatsomepeoplewouldhavethesesuccessfulmethodsstopworking.When thisoccurred,weadded thepersonback intoa testgroup

(whentheywerewillingtocontinuewiththeresearch),untiltheyfoundanotherworkingmethod.

Overtimethis,thispatternoccurredenoughtoallowustorealizethatpeoplewere changing in consistent patterns.
