Franklin Street Bridge
Public Meeting
Thurs, July 6th at

At the Michigan City
Senior Center
The Franklin Street Bascule Bridge is a Scherzer Rolling Lift Bridge in Michi-
gan City. It spans over Trail Creek and was opened in 1932. Although the bridge has received routine mainte-
nance, many elements of the structure are approaching the end of their ser-viceable design life. This meeting will present information from various in-
spections, investigations, and analyses of the bridge and the surrounding envi-ronment. Comments, suggestions and
recommendations from citizens will help properly identify the preferred
method for future design and construc-tion (which include: 1) do nothing 2) Alternative alignments 3) Two differ-
ent rehabilitation options 4) New
structure options.
Please plan to attend this informative meeting to help shape our bridge in the
future. No need to sign up.
We have T-Shirts

Gardening Group Wed, July 26th at 12noon
The Gardening Group continues with Master Gardener instructor
Dennis Brittain.
Director’s Corner “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there.” This quote is often attributed to Alice in Wonderland, although that is not quite accurate. The actual interchange with the Cheshire Cat went
like this:
“‘Cheshire Puss,’ she began, rather timidly, as she did not at all know whether it would like the name: however, it only grinned a little wider. ‘Come, it’s pleased so far,’ thought Alice, and she went on. ‘Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?’
‘That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,’ said the Cat.
‘I don’t much care where—’ said Alice.
‘Then it doesn’t matter which way you go,’ said the Cat.
‘—so long as I get somewhere,’ Alice added as an expla-nation.
‘Oh, you’re sure to do that,’ said the Cat, ‘if you only walk long enough.’
The phrase itself was written by George Harrison (of the Beat-les fame) in a song but is believed to have been taken from the exchange above between Alice & the Cheshire Cat. It’s an interesting thought that I can derive two different meanings depending on how you look at it. One meaning says if you don’t have goals, you will wander along any road and never really accomplish anything. The other meaning says, don’t worry about the journey, when you reach your destination, you will know it. An interesting and thought provoking con-
cept. I believe there is truth in both statements.
On the one hand having goals helps define your mission in life. It gives you a sense of purpose and a way to measure whether or not you have been successful. And by not specifi-cally defining what you want to achieve, you may waste a lot of time heading down paths that take you virtually nowhere. On the other hand, allowing yourself to “go with the flow” and end up where you naturally should be is a very liberating feel-ing. It suggests that there is no such thing as failure, only your perspective on it. Because truly, if you don’t know where you are going, what road you take is insignificant. Enjoy the
journey along the way and see where life leads you.
Whichever way you choose to look at it, you really can’t go wrong. Either you have a clearly defined end in sight and you will work towards that, or you don’t, and you will be content with wherever life leads you. In any case, I hope this month
leads you to a very Happy 4th of July!...Tara Miller

We are going to have to limit items
brought in to the FREE table to 5

have to pack them all up every week
and store them somewhere before the
weekend rentals, throw them in the
trash, or haul them to Goodwill our-
selves. Please understand that we
just don’t have the personnel to deal
with this. So we will ask that you
limit it to 5 items per week. Thank
you! The Management
