With summer right around the corner, it’s a good time to remind everyone about the importance of using sunscreen. The sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays can cause damage to your skin within a mere 15 minutes of being exposed, even on cloudy or cool days! Keep in mind that the sun’s UV rays are strongest between 10am-4pm, so sunscreen use is most important during this time!

BY NANCY S. FONGZone Intern

For most people, short daily periods of 5-30 minutes of exposure to the sun at least twice a week without sunscreen usually leads to adequate Vitamin D synthesis. Vitamin D can also be supplied through a healthy diet of fish, milk, dairy, liver, eggs or vitamin D supplements. For example, eating 3-oz of cooked salmon would give you 112% of your Daily Value. However, prolonged sun exposure gives NO extra production of needed vitamin D! Instead, the sun exposes the skin to the harmful effects of radiation that have been linked to the development of skin cancers and photodamage, skin damage from the sun leading to wrinkles, roughness, and pigmentation.

The Sun and Vitamin D

5 Reasons Why WearingSunscreen Is Important 1. Clouds do not block UV rays, only filtering them. 2. Sunscreen has been proven to decrease and prevent the development of skin cancer. 3. Sunscreen helps to prevent skin discolorations or facial dark spots. 4. Sunscreen aids in reducing the appearance of facial red veins and blotchiness. 5. Sunscreen slows down the development of wrinkles and premature aging skin.

Sunscreen Tips Try to put on sunscreen before you go outdoors. And remember to reapply every 2 hours, even more frequently if you are in water. Always use a sunscreen with sun protection factor (SPF) 15 or higher. Remember: The higher the SPF number, the higher the protection! Spread a thicker layer of sunscreen on the most exposed body parts: face, arms, legs, and neck. Don’t forget your lips! Protect your lips with sunscreen lip balm. Think about using cosmetics and face moisturizers that already contain sunscreen of at least SPF15! Check the expiration date! Expired sunscreen will provide no sun protection, and may cause skin irritation.

Some of the

earliest sunscreens included ingredients

such as rice bran oil, iron, clay and tar.

Corals produce a natural sunscreen,

which is being studied for human use!

Even elephants and hippos can get sunburned! They use sand or

mud as a natural sunscreen!

BY MEGHA LAMBAHZone Intern Summer is just around the corner,

which means it’s time to get outside and be active! However, when you combine the heat from the sun with the numerous summer outdoor activities such as swimming, hiking, running, and biking, it can be easy to experience a loss in body fluids. This is why

it is so important to keep hydrated during the summer, and the best way to do this is

by drinking water! Remember to drink at least 64 ounces of water per day.

Every cell in our body needs water to properly function and if you are

dehydrated it can make you feel tired, sluggish, and drained. We

want you to make the most of your summer, so here are

some tips to help you stay hydrated while having

fun in the sun:

1. Hydrate well before you exercise! Drink plenty of fluids before, during and after your workout; this will keep your body running like a well-oiled machine! Check

out CamelBak’s Handy Hydration

Calculator to see how much water you

should be drinking during different activities!

You can access the calculator at the website: camelbak.com/

HydrationCalculator

2. Replenish with electrolytes!

Any time you exercise in extreme heat, carry a water bottle to replace sweat losses regularly. Sport drinks are good options for moderate to high intensity exercise lasting longer than one hour to replenish your body with electrolytes and carbohydrates. You could also try coconut water, which has 60 calories in a 11oz can.

3. Fill up on fruits and vegetables during the summer! Fruits and veggies contain different levels of water and are great ways to keep hydrated. 4. Quench your thirst with flavored water! Infuse your water with different fruits or vegetables such as lemons, strawberries, melons, and cucumbers. Check out the recipes below for some new and refreshing ideas!

5. Carry a reusable water bottle with you! This way, whenever you finish your water, it is easy to re-fill rather than continuously having to purchase new water bottles! What better way to keep your wallet and the environment happy?

6. Switch out your soda for sparkling water! Sparkling water still has the fizzy soda feel but it’s a much healthier alternative to soda, and a great way to keep hydrated during summer. Try making fruit infused sparkling water with the recipes found below!

From all of us at the Zone, we hope that you have a FANTASTIC SUMMER! Keep these hydration tips in mind to enjoy an amazing summer of fun in the sun!

We were curious to hear what the good life meant to different students, so we

asked our Zone guests, “What does The Good Life mean to you” and these are just

a few of the wonderful responses we received:

So, what does the good life mean to YOU? Whatever it may be, we hope you will join us in celebrating good living at The Good Life Festival! With mid-terms coming up (and because it feels like they never really go away), the UCSD Student Health and Well-Being ClusterCluster and UCSD Recreation want to help you take a break from the books and enjoy the good life!

On Thursday, May 1st, from 5-9pm in Town Square, the Well-Being Cluster and Recreation will be hosting the 3rd annual Good Life Festival. This festival will feature a variety of healthy and fun opportunities to renew your good life and remind yourself that therethere are many different ways to live a happy and healthy life. At this festival, you will be able to enjoy live music, arts and crafts, a rock climbing wall, live Zumba, chair massages, henna tat-toos, face painting and photo booths, all while getting to know the different resources on campus that can help you live the good life. Oh, and of course we can’t forget the aqua bubble rollers and the land rollers where you will be able to run around in human hamster

balls! Seriously, if that isn’t on your bucket list, it should be!

TheThe most exciting part about the event is that it is FREE for all UCSD stu-dents. Even more exciting, Rubio’s will be providing FREE food for the first 1,000 people! But don’t worry, if you miss out on Rubio’s there will be plenty of free food samples from some ofof our favorite healthy vendors, or you can check out some budget-friendly options from local San Diego food trucks.

Let’s be honest, is there any reason why you wouldn’t want to attend this fun and healthy event? Everything is completely free; it’s a great excuse for a study break, and an easy way to enjoy a happy and healthy night at UCSD. Come celebrate the good life with us andand the rest of the UCSD community with free food, fun, and good times!

So what are you waiting for? Mark your calendar and come out and enjoy the #UCSDGoodLife! We can’t wait to see you there!

If someone were to ask you right now, are you living “the good life”, what would you say? Would you immediately say yes, or would you have to think about it? “The good life” can mean different things to differentdifferent people, such as watching a sunset, going on a hike with friends, eating your favorite healthy foods, or challenging

yourself to climb to new heights. Although there are different ideas of what “the good life” represents, most share common themes of cre-ating happiness, and promot-ing good personal values. Whatever this phrase may mean to you, all of us at The Zone want to help you live

your good life!

The Pursuit of The Good Life “ The good life to me means starting the day with smiles

and looking towards accomtowards accom-

plishing short term goals for a long

term reward.

”        - Luci Shook

“My idea of the good life is kicking off your shoes at the beach and dig-ging your toes in

the sand.
