From our Pastor: As we journey through the season of Lent, let me begin with this prayer song:
Holiness, holiness is what I long for
Holiness is what I need
Holiness, holiness is what

To Yours, to Yours, oh, Lord
All holiness begins with God’s holiness. And we are then called to lives of holiness. The writer of 1
Peter 1:15-16 says, “as he who called you is holy, be holy yourselves in all your
conduct; 16
for it is written, ‘You shall be holy, for I am holy.’” The first calling is to
“be.” My mom used to say, “Don’t just sit there, do something.” Sometimes it’s better to
reverse and “don’t just do something, sit there.” As the hymn writer invites us, “Take
time to be holy.” Then our doing may be grounded in God’s holiness.
I hope you have received your copy of The Sanctuary for Lent, 2017 and are
reading along each day with others of your church family. It’s one way to practice our
faith with intention and regularity. This is a season for seeking the very heart of God and
dedicating ourselves to loving God and our neighbors with all of our heart, all of our
mind, all of our soul, and all of our strength.
I hope you will engage many of the opportunities for study, fellowship, and worship during Lent. A new
feature in our Passion Week schedule is a Holy Saturday Vigil on the night before Easter. Come experience the
extreme darkness before the glorious light in the sanctuary on April 15 at 7:00 p.m. Don’t skip the challenging
events of Holy Week – Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday. These experiences of Christ’s agony
and self-sacrifice will make Easter morning all the more wonderful.

March 15. We will leave the church at 9:30 a.m. for a tour at 10 a.m. Then, we will have lunch at

Church Council: The Church Council meeting will be Tuesday March 14th
at 7 p.m. We will be
discussing our roles as leaders for Yadkinville UMC. The Discipleship Ministries provides a
job description or outline for each leadership position. We will review these at our meeting
and discuss our vision for the upcoming year. Please have brief reports to share from each of
your committees. We want to focus on our accomplishments and goals for the future.
Remember, the church is the greatest gathering of potential servants to do God’s work and we

Worship: March is here and that means we are marching toward Easter. There will be many opportunities
for worship during this month. (See calendar on page 2.) Consider attending as many services as possible so that
you may experience the whole meaning of Easter. As Christians, we should celebrate this holy time as the
highlight of our Christian heritage. Ash Wednesday service will be on March 1, at 6:15 p.m.

Trustees: The Trustees are working on several items as we approach spring. A special thanks to Marcia
and Jim Downey for their work on the flower beds and islands. If you have an area of special interest, you don't
have to be on the committee to help.
The Church van will soon have new tires.
It is almost time to clean and repair the chairs in the Family Life Center. We will schedule a time soon
and your help will be needed.
The next Trustee meeting is scheduled for March 28th at 7:00 p.m. Let us know if you have any
suggestions.

United Methodist Men: The United Methodist Men want to thank all who helped with
the Fat Tuesday Pancake Supper, especially Darrell McCormick, Our Chef, and George Bissette

Devotional Readings for Lent: You may have received a devotional booklet titled The Sanctuary
for Lent, 2017 in the mail as a gift.
The invitation is to get on the same "pages" during this Lenten season of self-examination, prayer, and
preparation for the events of Holy Week and for Easter.
The readings begin on Ash Wednesday, March 1, and continue through Easter morning. Copies are still
available in the Commons by the Family Life Center.

Youth: The Junior Youth have been very busy raising money to support our Mission work! Thank you
YUMC for your overwhelming support of our Poppy Seed Chicken Casserole sales. We sold
52 small casseroles and 9 large casseroles. We also prepared 7 large casseroles to serve a
meal to the NetWorX group in March! We have had chicken coming out our ears. If you
have not picked up your casseroles, they are all ready in the freezer in the church kitchen. If
you haven't paid, please remember to drop a check in the offering plate (small poppy seed
casseroles $8.00 and large $18.00).
Our PLANNED SCHEDULE is as follows for the Junior Youth:
March 12, 2017 - we will meet at the church immediately following Worship. We plan to go have lunch with
one of our church's home bound members; then return to church and finalize the meal for NetWorX. (Their
meal is on Monday night.)
March 17, 2017 - we will meet at church at 5:30 p.m. We will have dinner at El Jarrito; then return to
church to set up the Family Life Center and make brownies for the Red Cross Blood Drive on Saturday, March
18, 2017. (If you haven't signed up to donate blood - there are still available appointments!)
March 26, 2017- This would be our regularly scheduled meeting, but we have been so busy we are taking this
day off!
Junior Youth is open to all youth 6th - 8th grade. We are a busy group - we have fun! You are welcome
to join us (adults, too!); but wear comfortable shoes. We usually don't stay in one place very long. Remember
to bring $5.00 to each meeting for your meal. We will let you know ahead of time if we will be traveling so you
can bring extra "fun" money.

United Methodist Women: The United Methodist Women program emphasis the first quarter of the
year is Spiritual Growth. How appropriate that we begin preparation for Lent and Easter this week. Yadkinville
United Methodist Women, along with our families and friends, are encouraged to participate in the Lenten
Services starting with the Ash Wednesday Service at 6:15 p.m.
On Saturday, April 25, we will be hosting the Yadkin Valley District Mission
Study, Climate Justice, A Call to Hope and Action. The event will begin with a
Continental Breakfast at 9:00 a.m. The study is 9:30 to 2:00 p.m. There will be a catered
lunch, cost $7.
Our study leader will be Sandrea T. Williamson, a retired faculty member of the
History Dept. at NC A&T State Univ. A lifelong Methodist, she has been a certified Lay
Speaker for 20+ years. She also has taught several times in the School of Christian
Mission (now known as Mission u) for the WNCC UMW and she concluded a 2-year
term as Dean of Mission u in 2014. She is a member of Bass Chapel UMC in
Greensboro.
The Hands-on Mission project is for the Bethlehem Center in Winston-Salem. We will be collecting
the following items in a container in the commons: school supplies and arts and crafts supplies (construction
paper, crayons, cotton balls, puffy balls, etc. ).
Contact your Circle Leader for registration or give your $7.00 to Mildred Carter. If you do not
want lunch, you still need to register by March 11. All Yadkinville members are requested to help
provide breakfast food and help prepare if possible.
The Legislative Advocacy Day will be Saturday, April 1, 9:30-3:30 at First UMC Mocksville. We will
take a bag lunch. Drinks & snacks provided. No cost to attend. Social Action Priorities to be discussed:

.Criminalization of Communities of Color/Mass incarceration
.Economic Inequality

register you for the event. We have much to do speaking truth to power in the days ahead. Come increase your
awareness and develop advocacy skills with UMW sisters across the conference.
The next Gathering will be Tuesday, April 25, a Celebration of Membership. Members are
encouraged to bring a friend to come and share the fun! Details will be in the April Grapevine. If you are not a
member of UMW we welcome you to join. The only requirement is to choose to belong and support the UMW
Purpose. Church membership is not required. All are welcome!

Missions: Every month the Missions Committee is focusing on a Mission Outreach project. All loose plate
offering and designated offerings during March will go to this project. Dani Stewart will coordinate this project.
The Mission Committee has selected a new missionary to support in 2017. She is Clara Biswas in Cambodia.
Her profile is on page 9.
The March Mission Focus is UMCOR: The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is dedicated to
alleviating human suffering around the globe. UMCOR’s work includes programs and projects in disaster
response, health, sustainable agriculture, food security, relief supplies, and more.
UMCOR is a ministry of The United Methodist Church through the General Board of Global Ministries,
and our goal is to assist the most vulnerable persons affected by crisis or chronic need. We believe all people
have God-given worth and dignity.
UMCOR’s work reaches people in more than 80 countries, including the United States. We provide
humanitarian relief when war, conflict, or natural disaster disrupt life to such an
extent that communities are unable to recover on their own.
While UMCOR cooperates with other aid organizations to extend our reach,
our most important partners are the people we serve. We are confident that
successful solutions to emergency or chronic conditions begin with the affected
population. UMCOR provides these survivors not only temporary relief but long-
term education, training, and support.
UMCOR spends 100 percent of designated donations on the projects
our donors specify. When UMCOR donors give their time, money, and supplies,
they join UMCOR as the hands and feet of Christ.
(Pictured at left) Through a partnership, UMCOR helped bring service dogs
to visit children who live in a Florida community recovering from tornadoes.
The Red Cross Blood drive will be Saturday, March 18, from 10:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. in
the Family Life Center. Volunteers are needed to donate blood, be greeters, run the snack
table, prepare snacks, and set up tables and chairs Saturday afternoon. Please call Gingi
Parker (336-817-6551) to volunteer.

Caring Hands: Prayer shawls by the Caring
Hands group were blessed on February 26. The
Caring Hands have created and presented more than
85 prayer shawls and lap quilts.

Clara Mridula Biswas is a missionary with the General Board of Global
Ministries of The United Methodist Church serving as a community worker in
Phnom Penh, Cambodia. She works with the ‘poorest of the poor,’ especially
children, in slum areas and garbage dumps to facilitate their transfers to
relocation and rehabilitation centers.
“To bring hope to the hopeless, bring light to those who are in the dark,
bring Christ to the poor, and share the love of God,” (Luke 4:18-19)
summarizes Clara’s understanding of her service. She sees the objectives
as “sharing the love of God, helping children obtain an education by
opportunities to study through scholarship, improving living conditions
by providing vocational training, providing medical care and financial
support to the ill, and with education creating awareness on human
trafficking, human rights, and domestic violence.” The program supports 620 students in public schools by providing classes in such areas as music,
computer science, and art. It offers Sunday school and conducts Christmas and Easter programs each year. A
health component refers patients to hospitals and non-governmental organization (NGO) health centers. Clara
has worked for a long time with a church at one of the dumpsites, and now also works with the Berung Kok
Methodist Church in Phnom Penh’s large slum area of Toul Kork, which is near the railway station and similar
to the dumpsite areas. She also networks with other churches and NGOs, as well as visiting, monitoring, and
caring for patients.
Prior to her commissioning as a missionary, Clara was in Bangladesh with Food for the Hungry
International (FHI), a Christian service group based in the United States. As the community development area
manager, she served the poor, lower caste, and oppressed by supervising, managing, and monitoring education
and development programs from 1983 to 1998. Clara also served as the program director of the Christian
student center at Sendai City in Japan. She
emphasized issues of justice, development,
international understanding, worship, and
equality from a Christian perspective.
“When people are able to get jobs
and when they get assurance they can
continue to study in higher levels of
education, and that gives them hope for a
better future. It is joyful to watch the
faces of happy children as they go to
places they had never gone before.
Although we bring the Gospel informally,
we see the joy of the children singing
Gospel songs and performing in dramas
depicting Christmas and Easter.” Clara has extensive experience as a
volunteer in the Student Christian Movement. Her training in international, cross-cultural, and women’s
empowerment meetings is vast. She speaks English, Bengali, Hindi, and Japanese.
Born in Barisal, Bangladesh, Clara holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in social science and a diploma in
rural leadership and development from the Asian Rural Institute in Tochigi-Ken, Japan. She is a member of the
Church of Bangladesh, a united denomination.
