In just a couple of weeks, we will commemorate the Tenth Anniversary of the 9/11 bombings. We must never forget what happened and we certainly want to honor the memory of those who gave their all to help in that terrible tragedy. We thank those first responders who were there to help—the fire fighters, police officers, and EMTs. We are grateful to them and it makes us appreciative of our own servants locally who on a regular basis put their lives on the line for the people of their community. Paul reminded us: “For none of us lives to himself alone and none of us dies to himself alone. If we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. So whether, we live or die, we belong to the Lord.” (Romans 14: 7-8, NIV) Those folks came without assessing whether the people in need were good people or not. They reached out and many of them made the supreme sacrifice, doing their duty and providing hope in the midst of great uncertainty. On 9/11 at 7:30 p.m., joint choirs will pay tribute to those who gave so

much, as well as those who continue to give in the way of precious service to their community. We will also extend our appreciation and love to our military personnel who find themselves in “harms way” around the glove, endeavoring to protect our freedom and to strive to help others who are oppressed. This event will take place at Smithfield High School Auditorium. There is no charge but we hope folks will bring items that can be used to assist our service folks who are away from home. The High School Band will provide music as well! Many have given their all for the cause of freedom and in service to their fellow man. Others have served and continue to do so to protect us and provide for us in times of crisis and distress. Join us, the Community Choir, as we present “Homeland” in an attempt to say “Thank You” on September 11, 2011 at the Smithfield High School Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Pastor Don

2011 Alma Hunt Offering

Emphasis Dates: September 11-18, 2011 Offering Goal: $1,167,500 SBC Offering Goal: $5,000 “It is absolutely clear that God has called you to a free life… [so] use your freedom to serve one another in love; that’s how freedom grows.” - Galatians 5:13 (The Message)

The annual offering for Virginia missions was named for Alma Hunt (1909-2008), a native Virginian who was known worldwide for her missions service and her unswerving dedication to the cause of Christ. Churches and individuals may contribute at any time.

The offering provides funding for all WMUV missions and ministries and makes possible other special ministries, outreach projects, and initiatives not funded through regular streams of giving (but uniquely connected to Virginia Baptists).

Since 1976, this offering has been a joint venture of Woman’s Missionary Union of Virginia (WMUV) and the Baptist General Association of Virginia (BGAV) and Virginia Baptist Mission Board (VBMB).

The annual goal and allocation of funds are directed by a committee composed of equal representation from the WMUV Board of Trustees and the BGAV Executive Board.

When you give to the Alma Hunt Offering for Virginia Missions, you are equipping those who seek to share with others how God has set them free to live and serve.
