The Sonoma County Economic Development Board (EDB), in partnership with the Sonoma County Tourism Bureau (SCTB), is pleased to bring you the 2010 Annual Tourism Report. The 2010 Annual Tourism report contains three sections integrating findings on the local tourism industry.
The first section contains research conducted by our research partner, Moody’s Economy.com, on current industry vitality and long-term outlook. The next section of the report highlights key economic indicators produced by the California Travel & Tourism Commission and Smith Travel Research. The last section provides updated results of the EDB Annual Tourism Industry survey.
Moody’s Economy.com is a leader
The Healdsburg Promotions Council is embarking on a suite of projects designed to strengthen our tourism community.
First is a Tourism Impact Assessment that will quantify tourism’s role in the Healdsburg economy; number of jobs, total payroll, tax revenue, how tourist dollars are spent and how that data tracks over a period of time. It will be a useful tool in assisting the Council to prioritize their marketing dollars.
In conjunction with the Tourism Assessment, the Promotions Council will be organizing all the tourism stakeholders, lodging, dining, wine, recreation, retail, arts, events, etc., to develop a 5-year marketing plan for tourism in Healdsburg. They hope to tap into the incredible creativity of our business community to develop a program that addresses all of the experiences Healdsburg has to offer our visitors and to identify the best markets to focus their energy and resources.
Another tool that will greatly assist in getting that tourism message out is the development of a new tourism brochure and rack card utilizing the new brand developed by the
Healdsburg Lodging Coalition, “Thankfully, there’s Healdsburg”. Used as a fulfillment piece at the Visitors Center for visitor information packets, relocation packets and walk-ins, it will also be distributed to our tourism-related businesses to help cross-promote our Chamber members

in economic research and provides key quantitative and qualitative analysis on Sonoma County’s tourism industry. Key findings from Moody’s Economy.com 2010 Annual Tourism Update include:
While air passenger traffic at the Charles M. Schultz-•Sonoma County Airport fell by 9% in 2009, increases in passenger traffic to San Francisco International Airport, and more visitors driving up from the Bay Area, have helped offset some of the weakness in passenger volume at Sonoma County Airport. The continued strong popularity of wine and wine-•related culture, and its expanding link between local food offerings and health and wellness activities, underpin a positive fundamental outlook for the county‘s tourism industry.
The California Travel & Tourism Commission provides a ‘Travel Impacts by County’ report each year. This report provides the latest available economic impact figures for Sonoma County and, along with the most recent lodging statistics, these make up the primary sources behind the tourism industry indicators. Key findings include:
Inflation-adjusted destination spending in Sonoma •County showed a 0.9% decrease in 2008 after reaching a record high in 2007. Industry employment increased for the third consecutive year. Sluggish lodging performance statistics and transient •occupancy tax receipts reflect the industry downturn, as year-over revenues decreased in 2009.
Each year the EDB conducts an annual tourism industry survey of Sonoma County business owners and executives involved in tourism focusing on complete industry strength, confidence, and opportunities. Key findings from this survey include:
There are many niche market opportunities for •Sonoma County’s tourism industry. Strong survey support was shown for programs in health and wellness tourism as well as eco-tourism, cycling, and LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered). The majority of respondents chose not to expand •operations over the past year, largely due to the economic downturn. However, reporting tourism businesses have a generally positive outlook for this year.
Thank you for your continued interest in the Economic Development Board’s research. As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at 707-565-7170, Ben Stone, [email protected]

PROMO ...when their guests inquire as to what else Healdsburg has to offer. RFP’s to develop creative for this project will be going out to the membership in the near future.
The Promotions Council is currently upgrading the operating platform of the Chamber’s website. This platform update will allow the chamber to embed more data and member driven content than ever before. Chamber members will be able to log into a “Members Only” area where they can update the information in their listings, post job opportunities and upload documents (menus, coupons, etc.) and print referral reports that will show how many referrals your listing collected from healdsburg.com.
Also included is a brand new Events Calendar that will sort events categorically, broadcast via an RSS feed, and will offer the ability to enable “Enhanced Events” with more listing options (photo, map link, etc.) for Chamber Members only.
These are only a few of the ideas that are in the works for the web site. Once this phase is completed, the Council will be looking to give the site a visual facelift, making the site more dynamic and more effective in getting our message out. RFP’s for that portion of the makeover will go out to the membership following phase one.
It’s an exciting time for tourism development in Healdsburg. Stay tuned for updates on our progress, and check out the new stuff at www.healdsburg.com

The Healdsburg Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that WineMap, a local Healdsburg business, has become the second company to participate in the virtual incubator program, called the Entrepreneurial Pathways Program (EPP).
WineMap has developed an interactive web site, www.winemap.org, which allows visitors to the site to review data on vineyards and wineries. Currently, through the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) they have mapped Sonoma County and the State
of Oregon. The two principles of WineMap, Brad and Jordan Thomas are seeking assistance in the area of marketing and financing to map additional
areas. To date, consultants, like Melissa Monson of MONSON Communication have worked with them on developing a marketing plan. Under the agreement with WineMap and the Healdsburg Chamber of Commerce, WineMap is being provided at no charge these services to grow their business both in the area of revenue, profitability and personnel.
The first company to participate in the EPP, Webistree has been working with various consultants and has recently hired one sales person. They are beginning to experience and increase in sales and the number of customers that are served by their services.
The Healdsburg EPP functions as a virtual business incubator serving startups and 2nd stage entrepreneurial companies through mentoring, coaching, technical advising, education, financial planning and introductions to potential investors, partners, customers and service providers. What distinguishes the EPP from other business mentoring programs is that the EPP can call on a vast array of business professionals, in all aspects of business, from among the 600+ Healdsburg Chamber members to provide the necessary expertise.
This no fee service is available to all Healdsburg Chamber members. If your company is interested in participating in the EPP, please contact Herb Liberman, Economic Development Coordinator at 707-318-3101, or e-mail: [email protected]
Information about the EPP can be found at the following web site: http://www.healdsburg.biz/epp

My name is Bob Santucci. I am a life long, third generation Sonoma County resident. I am a Realtor with Century 21 Alliance. My partner Beth Robertson and I sell about 25 properties a year. I specialize in northern Sonoma County homes, ranches and vineyards. Being a Sonoma County native I have great knowledge of most of the area and a network of friends throughout. I
have lived in Sonoma County for over 40 years and I know what a special place we live in. Whether you are relocating from across town or across the country, I will make the transaction as stress free as possible. I have a local team of dedicated professionals that I have been working with the past fifteen years. If selling, I have a marketing plan that is second to none.
When I am not selling real estate I am busy raising my twin children, volunteering at Kiwanis, or being a Healdsburg Chamber Ambassador. I love the relationships that I have developed through the Chamber.

Copain’s winemaking practices aim to express each sites unique qualities which thereby means a minimum of intervention. The terroirs chosen will be highlighted by keeping alcohol percentages lower, retaining natural vibrant acidity, gently handling the fruit and wine, native yeast ferments and minimal use of new oak. Adhering to these principals will not only allow for the true expression of each vineyard but make for a more compatible and harmonious accompaniment when dining.
