Warren Buffett is arguably one of the world’s greatest investors of all time. He has amassed an incredible personal fortune, and the per share book value of his company has increased 19.7% annually since 1965. In 2013, he increased the net worth of Berkshire Hathaway by $34.2 billion.

In early March, he released his annual letter to stockholders. If you have never read this annual letter, it is well worth your time- even if you don’t spend much time investing. His thoughts about a variety of topics are included, and he injects a bit of humor into fairly boring topics. That letter can be found at www.berkshirehathaway.com.

A casual observer might incorrectly assume that Buffett has a huge staff, dozens of computer monitors in his office flashing ticker symbols, proprietary algorithmic software which predicts minor changes in stock prices, and an entire analytics team which computes the short-time value fluctuations of derivative securities. That’s not the case at all. In fact, I’m not even sure he monitors stock prices throughout the day. Spot prices do not matter to him. He is in it for the long haul.

What can we learn from Buffett’s philosophy on investing and apply in our own circles of influence?

1. Sheepmakeaveragereturns. Buffett invests in companies that are underappreciated by the market. He invests his energy and resources where other people aren’t. If he simply followed the crowd, he would earn the same return as everyone else.

2. Theshort-termdoesn’treallymatter. When your convictions are strong enough to hold out for the long-term, short-term fluctuations in value (or one could also substitute in public opinion here) are irrelevant. An attitude such as this takes significant courage.

3. Hetrustshispeople. Buffett doesn’t kow much about managing a railroad company. He leaves it to the team at BNSF to operate their company as they have always done. While he is definitely consulted on long-term strategic investments, he could care less about day-to-day decisions.

4. Dowhatyouknow. There are all sorts of new investment schemes, business practices, technology deployments, and other trends which create constantly-evolving business opportunities. However, Berkshire Hathaway only invests in companies in which the Berkshire team understands the core business model. Are there lost business opportunities as a result? Absolutely. You have to say no to good opportunities in order to say yes to the really great opportunities.

5. Ifyoucan’tsleepatnight-dosomethingelse. We are only on this Earth for a limited period of time. Make it worth your while.

I would suggest that each of us could learn something from his principles. Whether we hold elected office, run a small business, lead a non-profit, or manage a team of people, there are bits of wisdom that can change the way we view crisis and long-term planning. Although none of us can replicate his success, we can strive to be a little bit better each and every day. Good luck!

ON THE COVERINNOVATION AND ENTREPRENUERSHIP are cornerstones of the U.S. economy and vital to the growth of our communities here in Des Moines County. The goal of the Entrepreneurship Committee is to provide support to entrepreneurs dreaming of starting their own business, from the planning stage to startup and beyond.

One program the committee coordinates is the annual Business Plan Competition, no in its 7th year. Each year, entrepreneurs have the chance to compete for $10,000 in reimbursable grant funds offered by the Entrepreneurship Committee of the Greater Burlington Partnership. This year the committee is working hard to extend that support past startup by offering small business owners an opportunity to network, share ideas and hear from experts on topics of interest to them.

TRANSFORMING CHALLENGESINTO ACHIEVEMENTS

KEYNOTE BY: GEERY HOWE

NOMINATE A SMALL BUSINESS

SMALL BUSINESSAPPRECIATION BREAKFAST

On May 16, Howe will give the keynote address at the Small Business Appreciation Breakfast. “Transforming Challenges into Achievements” will be the emphasis of the address, focusing on successful ways to remove obstacles to change, and how to learn from common leadership mistakes, resulting in an improved execution of strategy. Key principles will be discussed relating to authentic leadership, how to commit to core values and service, and how to generate personal excellence, the inner fire for transforming challenges into achievements. “Today’s business culture is fast paced, results oriented and fluid. To be successful, leaders need relevant decision making tools and everyday examples of leadership in action,” says Howe.

Geery Howe, M.A., has been a consultant, executive coach and trainer in leadership, strategic planning, and organizational change since 1986 when he founded Morning Star Associates. He has worked extensively with thousands of executives from large corporations to small non-profits, from colleges and universities to public school districts, from hospitals to organizations that serve people with disabilities. Howe assists organizations to develop and implement effective strategic plans.

We encourage you to join us and honor all small businesses at the 2014 Small Business Appreciation Breakfast at the Comfort Suites Hotel & Convention Center at 7:30 am on May 16. Des Moines County small businesses receive four complimentary breakfasts. Additional breakfasts can be purchased for $15.

To RSVP for the Small Business Appreciation Breakfast, contact Belinda Colwell, Administrative Assistant, by May 13 at [email protected] or 319-208-0042. No cancellations or refunds after May 13.

Do you know a small business that has demonstrated outstanding business achievements and community service? If yes, take a moment and nominate that business for Small Business of the Year. You can nominate a business at www.greaterburlington.com and click on the button “Nominate a Small Business.”

Nominations are due by April 21. All for-profit entities in Des Moines County, who are members of the Chamber of Commerce and have fewer than 100 employees are eligible.

Questions regarding nominations? Contact Brenda Levitt, Economic Development Research Coordinator, at [email protected] or 319-208-0047.

YOUNG PROFESSIONALS WELCOME INTERNS TO DES MOINES COUNTY

www.midwestonebank.com

Spring has finally arrived in Southeast Iowa, and it won’t be long before schools are out for the summer. With the summer break, many college students will be coming to the Greater Burlington area for summer internships. We want their stay in the area to be a positive, welcoming experience, one that will encourage them to return to the area to start their career, as well as share with their classmates what an amazing place Greater Burlington is.

The Intern program offers numerous Lunch and Learns, business tours and socials for interns to participate in. In addition, students over 21 also receive a free summer membership to the Greater Burlington Young Professionals events, giving them an outlet to meet and network with other young professionals.

The program is free to Chamber of Commerce members and their interns. To sign your interns up, contact Mark Foster, Program Director, at [email protected] or 319-208-0050.

Midway through the third year of Greater Burlington Leadership, it has proven to be a powerful experience for all involved. “Through this class I have seen many amazing success stories and talked with current leaders moving our area forward,” said Jason Strandberg, Great Western Investments and Insurance. “With hard work and staying true to yourself, I believe we can all accomplish amazing things in Southeast Iowa. I am glad I have the opportunity to be a part of our future.”

The 2013-2014 class has experienced many thought-provoking sessions, including panels on the housing shortage in the area and taking a look at the balanced calendar proposed by West Burlington Community Schools. “The leadership class has strengthened my leadership skills by helping me understand my personality traits and how to work better with others,” said Will Stuekerguergen, Refreshment Services Pepsi.

As the 2013-2014 class looks toward graduation in May, you may be interested in participating in next year’s program. All members of the community may nominate candidates to participate in Greater Burlington Leadership; self-nominations are encouraged. All nominees will be contacted with program information and encouraged to apply. The final application will be due June 15. To learn more about Greater Burlington Leadership, visit www.greaterburlington.com/chamber_gbl.cfm.

Greater Burlington Leadership is an intensive professional development series designed to strengthen leadership skills by empowering and educating people who live, work or have interest in Greater Burlington. Annually, each class works as a team to develop a group project that will benefit the community in some way. The group project involves a number of leadership skills and allows each participant to build their personal network and evolve as a leader. “I think it’s wonderful to be able to give back to the Des Moines County Humane Society through the proceeds of this event,” stated Jeff Miller, Klingner and Associates.

The DMC Humane Society has several needs, including micro-chipping, parvo vaccinations, implementing a medical fund and a yearly sponsorship of all kennels.

“It’s wonderful to be able to bring such an exciting event to the area,” said Megan Bell, Great River Entertainment. If your business would like to support the event, sponsorships are also being sought. To obtain a sponsorship form, visit www.greaterburlington.com and click on the Jungle Jack Hanna icon or contact any member of the Greater Burlington Leadership Class or contact Adam Kerns at [email protected].

PARTNERSHIP HOSTS BLOOD DRIVE

In 2000, the Chamber of Commerce held its first mobile blood drive at the previous office on Jefferson Street. In the many years since then, the Chamber of Commerce and Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center have held numerous drives together.

The Greater Burlington Partnership is sponsoring a month-long blood drive at the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center at 3407 Agency Street, Burlington, April 1–30. As an extra incentive, all presenting donors will be entered in a drawing to win two 1-night passes to Burlington Steamboat Days.

KUSTER MEETS WITH TOUR

OPERATORS ATSHOWCASE

Becky Kuster, Convention & Visitors Bureau Assistant and Welcome Center Coordinator traveled to Toledo, Ohio for the Heartland Travel Showcase that took place March 6 - 9.

The show highlighted the friendliness and warmth of the America’s heartland. This regional show connects individuals and builds new relationships with tour operators. It offers suppliers the ability to showcase their community and show a glimpse of what a tour may have to offer for a variety of groups.

Kuster met more than twenty motor coach operators during this three day showcase and promoted the Greater Burlington area as an ideal location to bring varying travel groups.

For more details, contact Becky Kuster, at [email protected] or 319-208-0052.

Kay Sackville Brewer, Vice President has donated over six gallons since the first blood drive in 2000.

HUTCHESON AND TOYER ATTEND CONEXPO

David Toyer, Director of Economic Development and Jason Hutcheson, President & CEO recently attended ConExpo in Las Vegas, a once-every-three-years international tradeshow for the construction and agricultural equipment manufacturing industry.

“Attending this show gave us the opportunity to show support for existing local businesses like Alfagomma and Cobo International, who exhibit at the show, as well as network with their suppliers and other prospective businesses that would have an interest in locating here,” said David Toyer.

Although the Partnership was not an exhibitor at this show, the team invested considerable time in making the show a successful opportunity to prospect for business – from developing specific marketing materials to researching companies that attend the show.

As a result of the show, the team will now begin following up with a few businesses to further explore opportunities to bring them to Burlington.

For the second straight year, Greater Burlington is one of Site Selection magazine’s top micropolitan statistical areas for economic development projects in the United States. But that’s not all. Site Selection magazine also ranks Greater Burlington as the #5 metro on the Mississippi River.

“To again be identified among the top communities of our size is pretty incredible – let alone be identified as competing with metropolitans like Minneapolis, St. Louis and Memphis,” explained Jason Hutcheson, President & CEO of the Greater Burlington Partnership.

The rankings are part of Site Selection’s annual Governor’s Cup series, which ranks cities and states according to economic activity in the previous year. This year’s rankings include the ‘Big Muddy Cup,’ recognizing the top metros along the banks of the Mississippi River by per-capita new corporate facility investments over the previous 18 months.

“This is a great honor for our community and truly emphasizes we are doing the right things to sustain our economic momentum,” said Jeff Burkhart, Chairman of the Board for the Chamber of Commerce and Executive Vice President at Farmers & Merchants Bank & Trust.

There are nearly 576 micropolitans throughout the United States and a total of 34 metropolitan and micropolitan statistical areas along the Mississippi River.

The Greater Burlington Partnership is comprised of the area’s Chamber of Commerce, Economic Development Corporation, Downtown Partners Inc., and Convention and Visitors Bureau. The Partnership announced in January that it raised more than $2 million to support Partnering for the Future II – the organization’s 2014 to 2018 strategic plan.
