Isaiah 53 is quoted or referred to at least 85 times in the NT.

The prophecy begins with 52:13. It tells of Christ’s exaltation, and the rest of the section deals with His humiliation.

Now for the chapter before us.

It traces the life and ministry of Christ.

HIS REJECTION (Isa. 53:1-3).

Theirs was a three-fold rejection:1. His words, “report” (53:1).2. His works, “the arm of the Lord” (53:1). 3. His person (53:2,3).

a. Despised (looked down upon).b. Rejected (forsaken).c. Lightly esteemed (not wanted).

Yet He went about doing good and helping the helpless.

HIS REDEMPTION (Isa. 53:4-6).

Note the physical price that He paid (53:5).

Note the spiritual sufferings He bore (53:4,6).1. Our transgressions.2. Our iniquities.3. Our griefs and sorrows.

He died for us all (53:8).

HIS RESIGNATION (Isa. 53:7-9).

He was oppressed, harassed, treated roughly.

He was taken violently from prison and was not permitted to have justice.

Christ is to us as He submitted completely to the will of God (1Pet. 2:18-25).

HIS REWARD (Isa. 53:10-12).

God’s plan and the Savior’s work was a complete success (52:13)!

His death “pleased the Lord” (53:11).

What was Christ’s reward? (53:10).

He has conquered sin and Satan (53:12).

CONCLUSION

Isaiah 53 is truly one of the great chapters of the Bible.

It tells us of the great plan of God to save the world. The suffering Messiah would come and die so that our sins could be forgiven.

Who has not given their life to Christ?
