what he sees and know what he knows, I wouldn’t have to trust him. Trusting him, I don’t have to see where the road leads. I only have to keep my eyes on him. There’s a lot I don’t know, but I can live courageously. Because I know he knows.

See you Sunday.

Tim

Sisters and Brothers,

In his story “Yertle the Turtle,” the great theologian Dr. Seuss describes the pride and fall of one king of a pond. At the outset, King Yertle declares in frustration, “I am the ruler of all that I see, but I don’t see enough! That’s the problem with me.” He begins a campaign to raise his throne higher, so that he can see farther.

Like Yertle the turtle king, unfortunately, I like being in control; and it’s hard to feel in control of things that I don’t see. And I don’t see enough, either. Thus the prob-lem.

Proverbs 20:24 says, “The Lord directs our steps, so why try to understand everything along the way?” The road bends and turns. I have no map, no eyes to see in the dark and fog. If the Lord determines my steps, then most of the time I’m not going to know exactly where the path leads. For a man who likes to see and know everything, following the Lord’s direction is a challenge. I’m not in control. I never know what will happen next. And it’s better this way.

It’s better, because I tend to overthink things. If I knew about the challenges ahead, I’d worry, and when getting to the place of stepping up, I’d choke. If I could see from a distance all the dangers of this journey, I wouldn’t have the courage to make it.

Remember James and John? In Mark 10, the sons of Zebedee came to Jesus, asking for a favor. They asked for seats of honor, once they all arrived in the kingdom of heaven. Jesus replied, “You don’t know what you are asking! Are you able to drink from the bitter cup of suf-fering I am about to drink? Are you able to be baptized with the baptism of suffering I must be baptized with?” They assured Jesus that they were able, no question. Then Jesus told them, “You will indeed drink from my bitter cup and be baptized with my baptism of suffer-ing.” Turns out, they were going to swallow the cupful of suffering. In a short time, James would be beheaded; his brother John would be boiled alive and exiled at Patmos. But when they made their bold promise before Jesus, they had no idea what was in store for them. And not knowing was better for them.

Of course it’s not always suffering that awaits. There is always victory with Jesus and much reward. But if you want to know the truth, I can be as afraid of success as I am anything else, if I’m not totally prepared for it. I like to know what’s coming, to prepare myself, to plan my response. I don’t like to be surprised or caught off guard, because surprises mean I’m not in control.

So it’s like the turtle king said, “I don’t see enough. That’s the trouble with me.” I can’t master things un-seen, unknown—but it helps me remember, I’m not the Master. The Lord is directing my steps. If I could see

Hope House’s Affordable Christmas Program

Affordable Christmas is just that – an affordable Christmas provided to qualified, selected families of area elementary students based on recommendations from school family resource centers. For four years, this program has been em-powering low-income families, through churches and the community, with the opportunity to purchase new, unused gifts at an affordable cost, which in turn allows parents to maintain their dignity. Brand new toys are collected and/or monetary donations are used to purchase gifts which are then priced at 10-15% of the original retail value. There is one shopping day when families come by appointment to select gifts, pay, and participate in gift wrapping. Childcare is available for children over 2 while the parents shop (for 30-45 minutes).

WBC is excited to announce we are partnering with Hope House this year. The host church for the South Warren lo-cation is Richpond Baptist, and volunteers for our location are from Rich Pond Baptist, White Stone Quarry, Woodburn Baptist, and Clear Fork Baptist. There will be efforts to get other area churches involved as well.

What Can You Do Right Now?

1. Pray and discuss with your Sunday School class or small group, co-workers, family members, or other groups to determine if this is a project you’d like to sponsor – at any level. We will need gifts, monetary donations, and volunteers.

2. Watch the bulletin soon for an insert containing the Affordable Christmas Shopping List and don’t shop with-out the list. This program has a very specific list of items, and we need to stay with the list. All gift dona-tions to shop for on the list are under $35 in varying levels of cost (e.g., stocking stuffers, medium priced, higher priced ($35) gifts).

There are lots more details to come on this project. If you’re looking for a way to involve your family or small group in a meaningful, life-changing experience, this may be it! Please pray about it and see if God wants you involved in this mis-sion right in our back yard.

Watch for more details. If you have questions, please see Jack Wright or Donna Meador. If you just can’t wait for more information, check out www.hopehousebg.com/affordable-christmas.

Before long the nights will get colder and we will

again be reminded to be thankful for our warm beds

and our homes. The colder weather also makes me

think about the homeless who do not have a warm

place to stay. What can you and I do to help the

homeless? Thankfully, in our area, we have Room

In The Inn which gives us the opportunity to help.

Room In The Inn is very simple winter shelter pro-

gram where churches, like ours, open their doors

one night at a time to a small group of persons who

are experiencing homelessness. Room In The Inn is

a great opportunity for our church to impact the

lives of homeless individuals. Our church has

agreed to host these men and women (12 total). We

are still confirming our dates that we will host but

plan to be a host church for 8 different Saturday

nights from November to March. There are a varie-

ty of ways that you can be involved. About ten vol-

unteers are needed for each night. Volunteers are

needed for transportation (2 persons needed to drive

the church van and pick up the folks at the pick-up

location in Bowling Green), dinner preparation

(cooking, serving and clean-up), “innkeepers” (a

married couple or related man and women are need-

ed to stay the entire night each time we host.), cot

clean-up and linen laundry and volunteers to make

sack lunches for them to carry with them. We will

begin sign-ups soon. You can choose the area where

you would be willing to serve. The greatest need is

for innkeepers who will stay the whole night. Will

you consider being an innkeeper one night this

year? There will be a training session for all volun-

teers. Thank you for those who participated in this

ministry last two years and for those who will serve

this year.

Serving Together,

Warren Weeks

Preschool Small Groups in November

Elementary Small Groups in November

If you would like to receive the weekly email related to your your child’s ministry area please send email [email protected] to be included.

Our third lesson during October with the elementary age kids was focused on Moses, the Israelites, and them fleeing from the Egyptians only to run into facing the Red Sea. We talked about courage and being able to do what you should do even when it seems impossible. With each new obstacle God used his power to achieve his overall plan of freeing the Israelites – he just used Moses as the leader, the power was all with God.

In preparation for that lesson it reminded me of the verse in Matthew where Jesus tells the disciples “Humanly speaking it is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” Jesus was answering their question about how can a man be saved. We are saved by grace and the one who has the pow-er to give it is God. His grace and power go hand in hand – you really see a glimpse of how powerful God is by the ex-ample of grace through Jesus’ death and the power to with-hold a just punishment that we all deserve.

We have all done things, had thoughts, or said something that separates us a little farther each time from God. This is how we explain what sin is to kids – we tell them it’s any-thing you think, say, or do that isn’t pleasing to God. We deserve punishment for the sins we commit, but because we have a loving and powerful God he wants us to experience his grace – God’s riches at Christ expense. He wants us to be part of his family, be the children of his kingdom, and be heirs to his glory. When we accept his grace we accept a new value, our lives are worth a great cost, and we inherit eternal life.

Since God has generously poured out his grace and Spirit on us who accept it we have to be willing to extend that same grace first to ourselves and then to others. When we accept that Jesus took our place on the cross and died for our sins then God forgives all of our sins. I struggle with this because I can still remember – I can think back to things I’ve done or said that I know didn’t please or honor God. I accept that God has forgiven me, but how do I forgive myself? In John 8 Jesus says, (paraphrased) “That we are all slaves to sin and not a permanent member of the family, but if we are set free by the Son then we are really free.” If we continue to dwell on our own sins and not extend grace to ourselves for the ones we’ve committed, or worse, we shut down in fear of committing future sins then it’s like we are telling God I don’t want to truly be free – I’d rather be a slave.

The same is true when we don’t extend grace to others. When we judge them for their sins or we constantly point out their choices that don’t please God we are forcing them back into a mindset of slavery to sin when God has called us to show love so that the world would know his love. This is hard to do – it’s easier to see the wrong in others, but that puts us in a position of power which is not what God has set out for us. He tells Paul in 2 Corinthians, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weak-ness.”

*Due to the high volume of traffic we experience on Sun-day mornings in JAM City Kids we will be posting signs in November to help parents know where they can wait to pick up their child from his/her small group. We love having you and your child come to JAM City Kids each Sunday, but we also recognize that minimizing traffic in the middle of the hall makes it easier for everyone to get to their destina-tion. While you wait use this time to check out the bulletin board with weekly resources, chat with other parents, and get to know your child’s small group leader when they begin to check out kids from small group time.

There is a term I heard several weeks ago that has crawled up into my soul:

Kingdom Potential Maybe you’ve heard it expressed like this:

We thought she would be able to… We believed he had such potential to… We had hoped they could…

I keep wondering if I’m fulfilling mine. And if the worship min-istry is fulfilling ours. And even more so, if our church is ful-filling her kingdom potential. I imagine Pastor Tim might say that if all of us in the church are being fully obedient, then each of us and all of us will reach our potential. What is at stake? How can we know? How can we do better? I suspect the answer to all three questions is discipleship. We can “know” when we cultivate spiritual intimacy deep enough for someone can speak truth into us. And us into them. We can understand what is at stake—and be deeply moved by it—when we are in a small group of co-journeyers seeking to live out God’s purpose for our lives. And we can get better when we do the hard spiritual work of becoming like Jesus. Re-flecting His image. How about you? Are you firing on all cylinders? To be transpar-ent, I’m not right now. It’s driving me a little crazy, and I’m trying to get to that place. God has entrusted us with a great work. What you and I do matters. What we don’t do matters too. Here are some things I’m learning about this:

-When I get my way, I diminish my Kingdom potential. When God gets His way, I increase it.

-When I seek to build my kingdom, I discard my Kingdom

potential. When I seek first the Kingdom of God—and His righteousness (not my own), I grow God’s kingdom.

-When I sin, I shrink in Kingdom potential. When I over-

come temptation, the potential grows. -When I say yes to the wrong good thing, I limit my King-

dom potential. When I say yes to the right good thing, I expand it.

Interested in opportunities for joining one of Woodburn Baptist Churches 20/20 Church Planting partners? Please SAVE THE DATE for an up-coming Java (Indonesia) Summit, November 4th, 5th and 6th. We are hosting this event at Woodburn Bap-tist Church. John Trout who leads the team in Indone-sia will be one of the speakers at this Summit. John recently ask us to "keep this gathering in our prayers. I know the Lord is going to speak to us in a special way as we gather to celebrate, reflect, and pray for the name of Jesus to made famous among the people of Yogyakarta." John also reminded us of the Java Team Vision: " We will glorify the Messiah by giving every Javanese person in Yogyakarta a chance to hear and respond to the Gospel so we can plant a church in every village and community." And Team Motto: " Everyone who knows us gets to hear the Gospel."

Paul Chitwood, KBC Executive Director will be sharing with us on Friday night, 4th of November, as a part of this weekend emphasis on Missions. Please make plans to be at Woodburn Baptist Church for all or part of the Java Summit weekend. If you would like more details, please see Jack Wright, Lucas Hughes, or War-ren Weeks.

Here are some ways I’m hoping to see our Kingdom po-tential grow in the worship ministry in the next few months:

1. Start a new 8:30 service in the choir room. We need worship leaders, tech ministry servants, and a crowd to launch. Maybe 30-40 volunteers.

2. Finish the first WBC CD project and have it avail-able to you and your family/friends in time for Christmas gifts.

3. Prepare and present a Christmas event we’ll call “Sing the Gospel,” where you can bring your disconnect and lost friends to hear the great and glorious news that Jesus came for them. For us.

I’d love to hear from you. When you envision the King-dom potential for your life or for our church, what comes to mind? And would you like to help with any of the 3 things I mentioned? Grace and Peace, Rod

Have you ever heard the phrase, “In spite of?” It’s one of those phrases that speak volumes. “My son hit the dog in spite of me already telling him not to.” “I am going to ask that girl out in spite of my fear of rejection.” “God is going to love me in spite of what I decide to do.” It goes against the status quo or the expected outcome. It can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on the context. In Numbers 14 I came across a moment when God decided to do something for a generation in spite of their parents. It’s both good and bad. Good for the chil-dren and bad for the parents. Numbers 14:31 says, “You said your children would be carried off as plunder. Well, I will bring them safely into the land, and they will enjoy what you have despised.” God said he is going to bless a generation that was devastated by the attitude of rejec-tion the parents had fostered. The parents lived in such a way that despised the work of God and didn’t obey his leading. They didn’t think it was important to live for God or lead their families in the ways of God. Their decisions were selfish and/or against the path God was laying out for them. God did not give up on the children of that gen-eration. He was going to do a work in spite of the par-ents.

I don’t know about you but I don’t want these words to be said of me as a parent. I don’t want God to have to work in spite of me. I want God to easily work through me to “bring them safely into the land.” God is gracious and, thankfully, does things in spite of us, but He would rather do His work through us. This is especially true when it comes to our families. Determine today to live and lead in such a way that God doesn’t have to work in your family in spite of you.
