The Hierarchy of AngelsSt Dionysius the Aeropagite, a student of the Apostle Paul, had recorded what Paul had toldhim of his vision of the third heaven (2Cor 12:2).The following is from the Minea of St Dimitry of Rostov and appeared in theNovember/December 1968 issue of Orthodox Life. This is taken from a reprint included inthe booklet _Orthodox Teachings on the Holy Angels_ compiled by Fr Demetrius Serfes (Itmay still be available through St John of Kronstadt Press)

The nine orders of the angels are divided into three heirarchies, each of which is divided intothree orders: the highest, the intermediate, the lower.The first hierarch, the highest and closest to the Most Holy Trinity, consists of theSERAPHIM, CHERUBIM, and THRONES.The God-loving six-winged SERAPHIM stand closer than all before their Creator and Mker, asthe prophet Isaiah saw, saying: "And the seraphim stood around Him, each having sixwings" (Isaiah 6:2). They ar fire-like since they stand before That One of Whom it iswritten: "For our God is a consuming fire." (Heb 12:29); "His throne was a flame of fire"(Dan 7:9); "the appearance of the Lord was like a blazing fire" (Ex 24:17). Standing beforesuch glory, the seraphim are fire-like, as it said: "Who maketh his angels spirits; hisministers a flaming fire" (Ps 103:4). They are aflame with love for God and kindle others tosuch love, as i shown by their very name, for "seraphim" in the Hebrew language means:"flaming".After the seraphim, before the All-knowing God, Who resides in inaccessable light, stand themany-eyeed CHERUBIM in ineffable radiance. More than the other lower orders of angels,

they are always radiant with the light of th knowledge of God, with the knowledge of themysteries of God and the depths of His Wisdom; being themselves enlightened, theyenlighten others. Their name "cherubim" in translation from the Hebrew language, means:"great understanding" or "effusion of wisdom", because throught the cherubim wisdom issent down to tohers and enlightenment of the spiritual eyes is given for the seeing of Godand knowledge of God.Thereafter stand the God-bearing THRONES (as St Dionysius the Areopagite calls them)before Him Who sits on the high and exulted throne, being named "thrones" since on them,as on inctellectual thrones (as writes St Maximus the Confessor) God intellectually resides.They are not called "God bearing" according to essence but according to grace andaccording to their office, as the flesh of Jesus Christ (as St Basil the Great writes) is called

"God-bearing" according to essence since it was indivisibly united with God the WordHimself. The thrones are then called "God-bearing" not according to essence but according ograce, given for their service, which is mystically and incomprehensibley to bear God inthemselves. Residing on them in an incomprehensible manner, God makes His righteousjudgement, according to the word of David: "Thou hast sat upon a throne, O Thou thatjudgest righteousness." (Ps 9:4). Therefore through them the justice of God is pre-eminently manifesed; they erve His justice, glorifying it and pour out the power of justiceonto the thrones of earthly judges, helping kings and masters to bring forth rightjudgement.

The middle hierarchy also consists of three orders of holy angels: the DOMINIONS, theVIRTUES, and the POWERS.The DOMINIONS are so nemed because, being themselves free, they dominate over the restof the angels which follow behind them. Having abandoned servile fear, as St Dionysius theAeropagite says, they voluntarily and with joy serve God unceasingly. Also they send downpower for prudent governing and wise management to authorities on the earth set up byGod. Further they teach how to control the senses, how to subdue in oneself dissolutedesires and passions, how to enslave the flesh to the spirit, and how to rule over one's willand be above all temptations.The VIRTUES, [the usual translation of the name of this order of angels as "virtues" isreadily misleading if the old meaning of the word "virtue" as "power" or "force", especiallyas regards to divine beings (cf Oxford English Dictionary), is not remembered. Note oftranslator.] filled with divine strength, quickly fulfill the will of the All-High and OmnipotentLord, strong and powerful. They both work very great miracles and send down the grace of

miracle-working to God's saints, who are worthy of such grace, in order that these maywork miracles, such as heal every sickness and foretell the future. The holy virtues also helppeople laboring and those overburdened by the bearing of an obedience placed on them bysomeone - by which their names "virtues" is explained - and they bear the infirmities of theweak. They also strengthen every man in patience, so that he does not faint away inaffliction but rather bears all misfortune with a strong spirit, courageously, and withhumility, giving thanks for everything to God, arranging all for our benefit. The POWERS are so called because they have power over the devil, in order to restrain thepower of the demons, to repulse the temptations brought upon people by them, and toprevent the demons from harming anyone to the degree that they would wish. The powersstrengthen the good ascetics in spiritual struggles and labors, protecting them so that theymay not be deprived of the spiritual kingdom. They help thos wrestling with passions andvices to cast out evil thoughts and slanders of the enemy and to conquer the devil.

In the lowest hierarchy there are also three orders: the PRINCIPALITIES, the ARCHANGELS,and the ANGELS.The PRINCIPALITIES are named thus because they have command over the lower angels,directing them to the fulfilment of divine orders. The management of the universe and thekeeping of all the kingdoms and princedoms, of lands and all peoples, races and nations, isalso entrusted to them since each kingdom, race and people have for themselves a specialdeeper and manager from the heavenly order called the principalities, for all their country.Further, the service of this angelic order (according to the explanation of St Gregory theDialogist) consists in teaching the people to requite each person in authority according tohis calling. Finally, the angels of this order raise worthy people to various honorable officesand direct them so that they take power not for the sake of their own gain and benefit, norfor the sake of love of honr and vain renown, but for the sake of honor from God, for thesake of spreading and augmenting of His holy glory, and for the sake of the benefit of theirneighbors - as serving the general needs of all their subordinates.

The ARCHANGELS are called the great heralds of good news, announcing the great andmost glorious. Their service (as the great Dionysius the Aeropagite says) consists inrevealing prophecies, knowledge, and understanding of God's will which they receive fromthe higher orders of angels and announce to the lower order, ie. the angels, and throughthem, to men. St Gregory the Dialogist says that the archangels strengthen people in theholy faith, enlightening their mind with the light of knowledge of the holy Gospel and

revealing the mysteries of devout faith.The ANGELS are the lowest of all the orders in the heavenly hierarchy and the closest toman. They aannounce the lesser mysteries and intentions of God and teach people to livevirtuously and righteously before God. They are appointed to guard each of us who believe:they sustain virtuous people from fallen, and never leave us though we have sinned, but arealways ready to help us, if only we ourselves want it.All of the heavenly orders are also called by the common name "angels". Although theyhave different names according to their situation and grace given by God (as seraphim,cherubim, thrones and the rest of the orders), yet all in general are called angels, becausethe word "angel" is not a denomination of essence, but of service, as it is written: "Are they

not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister" (Heb 1:14). But their service is differentand not identical: each order has its own service; for the All-Wise Creator does not revealthe mystery of His design to all to the same degree, but from the one to the others, throughthe higher He enlightens the lower, revealing to them His will and commanding it to be as inthe book of the Prophet Zachariah. There it is said that one angel, after conversing with theprophet, met another angel who ordered him to go again to the prophet and reveal thefuture fate of Jerusalem: "And behold, the angel that talked with me went forth and anotherangel went out to meet him, and said unto him, Run, speak to thes young man (that is, theprophet Zachariah), saying, Jerusalem shall be inhabited as towns without walls for themultitude of mena and cattle therein: For I, saith the Lord will be unto her a wall of fireround about" (Zach 2:3-5).Deliberating about this, St Gregory the Dialogist says, "When one angel says to the other:

'Run speak to this young man' there is no doubt that certain angels send others, that thelower ones are sent, that the higher send" (St Gegory the Dialogist, Interpretation of theGospels, #4).We find exactly the same thing in the prophecy of Daniel, that one angel orders another tointerpret the vision to the prophet. From this it is evident that angels of higher orders revealthe divine will and intention of their Creator to angels of the lower orders, that theyenlighten them and send them to people.A'albiel An angel in service of the archangel Michael.

Aban The angel of October, he also governs the 10 day of the month.

Abariel An angel in ceremonial magic tracts, used for invoking. His name is also foundinscribed on the second pentacle of the moon.

Barchiel This angel presides over the sun signs of Scorpio and Pisces. Angel of February.Those who were born under these signs can pray to Barchiel for Special protection andbright blessings. We can all pray to this illumined one to inspire us to become morecompassionate and to help us develop inner strength and the will to heal ourselves andothers. This angel also grants emotional depth and awareness.

Butator An angel of calculations. He serves in the third hour of the day.Cabriel The angel with dominion over the sign of Aquarius. He is one of six angels placedover the four parts of heaven.

Cadmiel Angel implicated in the destiny of humans. Cadmiel has to make sure that everyman and woman accomplishes their own destiny. The favorite sentence of Cadmiel is: "Ifyour soul goes to the right, don't go to the left!"

Cahetel One of the 8 Seraphim; he rules over agricultural products and is one of the 72angels bearing the name of the god shemhamphorae. In the cabala generally he is ofteninvoked to increase or improve crops. His corresponding angel is Asicat.

Calliel One of the throne angels serving in the second heaven, invoked to bring prompt helpduring adversity.

Caluel A wednesday angel invoked from the south.along with Clliel invoked to bring prompthelp against adversity.

Camael(Kemuel)(Kamael) Chief of the order of powers; one of the holy sefiroth;personification of divine justice; among the 7 that stand in the presence of God. An angelwho presides over beauty, joy, happiness, power in interpersonal relationships, self-discipline, and contentment, Camael grants these gifts to those who pray to him. Anyactivity on our part that emulates this angel, such as bringing gladness to others, drawsCamaelic energies into our lives and enfolds us in wings of happiness. Essene prayer:

On the onehand he is said to be chief ruler of the 5th Heaven (in Jewish legendary lorehis residence is usually placed in the 7th Heaven), one of the 7 regents of the world served by 2 million angels; on the other hand, he is "that great serpentwith 12 wings that draws after him, in his fall, the solar system."[Cf. "Revelation 12.] Samael is also the angel of death (one of a number ofsuch angels) whom God sent to fetch the soul of Moses when the Lawgiver's dayson eath had come to an end. Talmuc "Yalkut I, 110", speaks of Samael as Esau's

guardian angel. "Sotah 10b" speaks of Samael as Edom's sar (angelic princeguardian). In the "Sayings of Rabbi Eliezer", Samael is charged with being theone (in the guise of a serpent) who tempted Eve, seduced her, and became by herthe father of Cain. In "The Zohar" (Vayishlah 170b), Samael is the dark angelwho wrestled with Jacob at Peniel, although Michael, Uriel, Metatron, andothers have been identified as this antagonist. Samael is also equated with thesatan (i.e., the adversary) who tempted David to number Israel [Rf. IChronicles 21]. "Targum Jonathan to the Prophets" renders Genesis 3:6 as: "Andthe woman saw Samael the angel of death." This verse is tanslated inthe "Paraphrase of Job, 28:7", as: "the path of the Tree of Life which Samael,who flies like a bird, did not know, and which the eye of Eve did notperceive." In Waite, "The Holy Kabbahlah", p.244, Samael is characterized asthe "severity of God" and is lited as 5th of the archangels of the world of

Briah. Here he corresponds to the sefira Geburah. Cornelius Agrippa, "ThreeBooks of Occult Philosophy", equates Samel with the Greek god Typhon. "BaruchIII, 4", mentions "the angel Sammael." In Charles, "the Ascension of Isaiah IV,7", occurs this passage: "And we ascended to the firmament, I and he (i.e.,Isaiah and his escorting angel, a very glorious one, not named--but comparewith the angel that Abraham encounters in the "Apocalypse of Abraham"], andthere I saw Sammael and his hosts, and there was great fighting therin and the angels ofSatan were envying one another." It is clear here that Sammael andSatan are interchangeable. In Longfellow's extensive poem, "The Golden Legend",when the rabbi asks Judas Iscariot why the dogs howl at night, the answeris: "In the Rabbinical book it sayeth/The dogs howl when, with icybreath,/Great Sammael, the Angel of Death,/Takes through the town his flight."

In fiction, "Red Samel the Seducer," father of the hero, is a character inCabell, "The Devil's Own Dear Son. Cabell calls Samael the "youngest and mostvirile of the 72 princes of Hell, a red-headed rogue who had made hisreputation some centuries ago with both Even and Lilith." To Cabell, Samelbelongs to the order of seraphim and is "first of the art critics."
