Why Fall is the Best Time to Plant ... trees, shrubs, perennials & spring flowering bulbs!

Hey, its all about the roots! Let us explain why here. Timely, Local Tips Now is the Time To . . . Pest Alert: Continue to monitor trees and shrubs for insects and disease, in particular spider mites due to our smoke-filled air. Treat with Bonide All Seasons Horticultural Spray Oil. Aphids (treat with Bonide All Seasons Horticultural Spray Oil) and powdery mildew (treat with Bonide Sulfur Plant Fungicide or Copper Fungicide) are again a problem due to the season's cooler days and nights.

● Get started on your landscape design for a fall installation - the best time to plant.

● Apply one year Bonide Annual Tree & Shrub Insect Control to trees and shrubs to prevent early spring infestations of aphids and other troublesome insects.

● Treat chlorotic (washed out green/yellowish color) trees and shrubs with Ironite.

● Plant cool-season vegetables - lettuce, spinach, onions, garlic and endive at two week intervals to keep a supply coming into cooler weather. If they bolt, remove seed heads

● Purchase spring blooming bulbs now for best selection, but don't plant any until later in October and November. Plant with Dr. Earth Bulb Fertilizer for best results.

● Start a new law from seed or repair bare spots now. . For the best success use Bonide Dura-Turf Premium Grass Seed and Lawn Seed Starter then cover with Gardener & Bloome Soil Building Compost.

House Finch The American Kestrel is North America's smallest falcon. In many older field guides you might see it referred to as "sparrow hawk", indicating the propensity to seek out small songbirds as prey. The Kestrel is one of the most colorful birds of prey, with a slate blue head, black mustache and warm, reddish brown back. The male amps up this feast of color with slate blue wings, also. The Kestrel is roughly the size and shape of a Mourning Dove, but with a larger head, longer tail and distinctive falcon-shaped wings. Kestrels most often hunt from the ground, although they can also catch food in flight. Their diet is heavy on invertebrates and insects such as dragonflies, grasshoppers, beetles; but they also are fierce hunters with prey including song birds nearly their size, lizards, small snakes, mice and voles. Gail's Gardening Tips Outside plants are arriving weekly with gorgeous fall colors to brighten your fall containers and gardens. Plant some asters, sedums, Japanese anemones, coneflowers and rudbeckia. Make sure to leave room to plant some spring bulbs this season you will be glad you did next spring. Spring bulbs can only be planted in the fall, so don't miss our great selection to make your garden a showplace next spring. There's still lots of time to get your farmer on. You have time to plant seeds and starts in your fall garden. Lettuce, carrots, kale and radishes can all be started from seed now. Enjoy these nutritious, easy and fun to grow foods in a container near the kitchen or out in the garden. You will begin to harvest some of these crops in as early as three weeks. We also have starts available for that instant garden that can be planted next to your mums and other fall flowers. Lacinato edible kale makes a great companion to 'Autumn Joy' sedum and both are about the same height at maturity.
