President’s ReportAnnual MeetingAugust 17, 2014

BOB HUGHES, PRESIDENT

My thanks to the Voting Board members, committee chairs and members, and the entire HLCC staff for making this a most enjoyable year for me.

Like most of you, I’m sure we came here to Highland Lakes from someplace else. It will never be my intention to bring that “someplace else” to Highland Lakes. When we moved here we fell in love with a beautiful, peaceful, old-fashioned slice of Americana where people still honor and observe such traditions as Memorial Day, Independence Day and Veterans’ Day, while maintaining a lifestyle that generations to come may enjoy.

During the past year, we have endeavored to keep our lake community strong. Lake water quality remains a top priority. We’ve installed new boat docks at Club Park, Eckhart Sailing Center, and Comet Row. We’ve paved over a mile of roads, installed 55 speed humps, and completed engineered road projects on Bushwick Lane and Tranquility Drive. We’ve plowed and treated our roads through the cold, cold, cold winter. We’ve replaced the roof on the clubhouse, and the backstop at the Beach 1 ball fi eld. We’ve continued our Annual Clean-up Day, septic pumping program, and freeway beautifi cation program. We’ve enjoyed the weekly, monthly and seasonal sports and craft activities, as well as our signature events including Family Day, New Year’s Eve Party, square dance, St. Patrick’s Day Dinner, monthly breakfasts and Junior and Adult Appreciation Nights. We’ve introduced a digitized edition of the Newsette, and are evaluating a Facebook presence.

In the coming year we’re looking forward to the construction of the clubhouse parking lot/drainage project, replacement of the clubhouse deck and railings, a number of engineered road projects, as well as our normal road paving projects.

To me, the thread that runs through almost 80 years of Highland Lakes history is the bond of people choosing to live together as a community. Th is choice requires a commitment to involvement in the community. Your presence here today is an affi rmation of that commitment. May it not only continue, but grow.Th ank you, Bob Hughes

Boat Removal Notice from Boat Docks and Racks

KEN BOSCHERT, CHAIRMAN, BOAT DOCK COMMITTEE

Remove boats from all docks by October 15Notice to Boaters: All boats on Club docks must be

removed by October 15. Any boat removed by the Club may subject the member to an assessment and storage fees in accordance with the revised rules adopted by the Voting Board. Any boat that cannot be identifi ed through a Club permit, NJ registration, or hull identifi cation number will be declared abandoned and disposed of in accordance with New Jersey law.

Th e Boat and Dock Committee will again inspect and repair boat racks this fall. Th e program requires the removal of all boats stored on boat racks on the western side of Highland Lakes by October 15, 2014. Once the racks and area are clear, maintenance and landscaping can be performed late in the fall and in the early spring.

As we all know, many boats appear abandoned or otherwise unused. Th ese boats are taking up valuable space that could be better used by members interested in boating. Furthermore, clearing these racks of abandoned/unused boats avoids the expense of adding additional boat racks, and taking over more land. Lastly, it eliminates the excuse that members have that there is “no rack space and storing my boat on the ground is the only choice I have.”

All freeways on the lakes west of the main lake are aff ected by this notice in addition to the following locations where boats are stored on racks:Lake 5 - Pocasset Road - Beach 7 areaLake 1 - Lakeside Drive - Beach 1 areaMain Lake - western shore areas as follows:Club ParkComet RowEckhart Sailing Center Freeway at Winetka RoadFreeway at Wiscasset RoadFreeway at Oneota RoadFreeway at stream crossing south of Oneota RoadFreeway south of Ocala RoadFreeway north of Monadnock RoadFreeway at Lakeside Drive East near spillway

All boats stored at these locations must be removed by October 15. Please contact the Boat and Dock committee or the Club if you anticipate any diffi culty in removal of your boat.

Once again we will be conducting a lottery in the spring for these spaces. Please remember to submit a completed 2015 boat dock application to be included in the lottery by March 15, 2015 in order to have an assigned boat slip by the drawing in April. No members, including grandfathered members, are exempt from completing a form each and every year.

Happy WalkersMARYJANE WISNIEWSKI 973-764-6544

Today was a magnifi cent day for walking. All around the lake was very quiet. We missed seeing the children at the baseball fi elds and all the children at the swim lanes. Yes, all or most of the activities are over for summer. We enjoyed our walk and spoke about our next week event. We will meet at the clubhouse at 9 am and carpool to the Appalachian Trail. Following that we will have our annual brunch.

See you all on Monday 9 am at the clubhouse. Parisian Jazz coming to Highland Lakes on Sept. 12

Ooooh la la! Th e modern day ambassadors of classic Parisian swing are coming to Seckler Stage. Singer Tatiana Eva-Marie (who the Wall Street Journal recently hailed as “one of the best young singers around”) and the Avalon Jazz Band are bringing their repertoire of timeless American standards and French jazz songs to Highland Lakes on September 12. Doors open at 7:30, show starts at 8:30 pm.

Th e Avalon Jazz Band’s performances meld Parisian and Golden Age swing spirit, taking music lovers on a ride back in time to the Parisian “zazou” era of the 1930s and 1940s. (See for yourself: www.avalonjazzband.com/video/.) With prodigious musicianship, inimitable French charm and a little bit of bohemian savoir faire, Eva-Marie and her band’s Gypsy jazz sound—fi rst made famous by Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli—will transform Seckler Stage into Montparnasse for an evening of music you’ll never forget.

Tickets for members-in-good-standing and their guests may be purchased at the Club offi ce (and at the door on the evening of the show, if available) for $15–please bring your member card or member badge. Advance tickets for non-members ($20 cash-only) will go on sale August 26 at the Club offi ce. Please call 973-764-4366 for more information.

Avalon Jazz Band will grace Seckler Stageon September 12.

2014 Lifeguard Olympics PET JABLONSKI AND NICOLE GAGLIOSTRO

One of Highland Lakes’ great summertime traditions commenced at its traditional venue this past Th ursday at Beach 1. Th e Lifeguard Olympics have been a staple in HLCC Water Safety since the days of Carol Hastie and Chris Hollis. Th e two trailblazers, Hastie and Hollis, shaped modern day Highland Lakes Water Safety and many of the mainstays of the program, including the Olympics.

Th is year’s competition added an opening ceremony including an electric guitar rendition of the “Star Spangled Banner”, preformed by Evan Dolcimascola that rivaled the great Jimmie Hendrix. For anyone who has not had the opportunity to witness Lifeguard Olympics, all of our wonderful beaches are grouped into teams and those groups compete in a series of events ranging from: Egg Toss, Capture the Flag, Th ree Person Surfb oard, and a Wacky Relay. Th is year’s competition was a great success because of this year’s coordinator, Haley Anderson and her team, all of our enthusiastic fans, and our wonderful lifeguards. Th is year, Beaches 3 & 7 overcame an early defi cit built by Beaches 1, 5 & 6 in the Wacky Relay to emerge as the victor for the second straight year.

Th ank you to all of our fans and lifeguards for a great night!

FRANK HENNINGER 973-764-3363

Our 37th Annual Jogathon will start from the Clubhouse at 10:00 am Saturday, August 30. No entry fees, no prizes, just a great time. Everyone brings a can of frozen orange juice concentrate that turns into “Joggers Juice” to be enjoyed upon returning to the Clubhouse.

We go once around the big lake (4.5 miles) and we are all ages and abilities. Families particularly have a good time. Many walk, some jog, and some hardy members run like the wind. Typical times for a “once around” are:Slowest walker – 2 hours 14 minutesAverage walker – 1 hour 20 minutesAverage family – 1 hour 15 minutesAverage winner – 24 to 36 minutesAverage jogger – 44 minutesTh e Record – 22 minutes 25 seconds!

Our slowest walkers had stopped at a friend’s house for iced tea, and our speed record was set in 1982 by Steve Grube. Hope you can join us on August 30.

Since this will be the last Jogathon for me, I hope you stop by to say “hello and goodbye!”

Rock n’ Roll IS here to stay! WOW! I just have to thank all of you who came to the Senior Gala on 8/14. I know everyone had a rockin’ great time. Th ere were 46 “teens” at this party and we danced all night long (some on the dance fl oor w/others, some solo) to the exceptional music of Henry Boote. He is a great entertainer, not a DJ. He loves coming to the lake and playing for us because he’s relaxed, playing the music we love & he loves, singing for us & he says,” Joyce, your club knows how to have a good time!” Many, many thanks to the volunteer decorating squad, and to the un-decorating squad! We had the Lake Room cleaned up in less than 30 minutes. Th ank you, thank you, thank you. It makes me very happy that our eff orts produced a wonderful evening. Th at’s always my goal.

So, let’s jump into the pool or the lake (more appropriately) and get on with something fun to tickle your gray matter. Ready?

the school bus stop at Beach 1. On Wednesday, September 3 the parking and traffi c pattern at Beach 1 will be changed to accommodate school buses, and will be in eff ect until the end of school next June. Here are the key points to these changes:• Parking for those who enter the Beach 1 site from Breakneck Road will be restricted to the parking spaces in the “loop road” – there will be no access into either of the two parking aisles along the ball fi eld or children’s playground area.• Stopping/Standing is prohibited at all times within the school bus loop road.• Access into both parking aisles will be available from the rear of the site – the Lakeside Drive entrance. You will be able to pass from one aisle to the other in the area at the loop road and at the rear of the site.• Designated handicapped parking spaces are restricted under all circumstances to those drivers authorized to use them – summonses will be issued for unauthorized use.• Parents are reminded that the tennis courts are for tennis only – children are not permitted to play in these areas at any time.• Parents who live north of Breakneck Road should use the Lakeside Drive entrance, leaving the spaces in the loop road available to others.

Your cooperation is essential in making the school bus stop safe for all children and the drivers of the school buses. Th ank you.

Th anks for the willingness to try something new. Let’s wear our red shirts next Sunday for our second picture? See you Monday and/or Wednesday night at 6 pm..

Team TennisAugust 16, 2014CATHY TANSEY AND ELAINE KUNTZ

Twenty-seven people showed up for team tennis. A couple of new faces joined the action: Kathy Kroll, Barbara & Lou. I guess they remember how much fun tennis was and decided to return to the sport, and the friendships made. So nice to have them back. Elaine Kuntz returned to the courts to play this week aft er a long absence from the game. Her playing had much to be desired. John Whelan replaced Cathy, doing a good job setting up the matches. Lyn Kaplan was sporting her pink tennis shirt for two weeks in a row and looking good. Jerry Nathan was collecting for our Champagne Brunch. Lee Eisenberg is keeping on top of our amazing kitchen help, Nancy and Ann. John Whelan is working on the program, continuing to collect old pictures of the tennis players and sharing them at the Tennis Party. Can’t wait to see what he has put together this year. It should be fun as always. Remember all are welcome whether you played once or every week. Come and join us. Tennis is played every Saturday morning from 9 to 11. All you need is a racquet, sneakers and a current HLCC badge. See you on the courts. Any questions call Cathy at 3174.

Women’s VolleyballK & K STRUBE 973-764-3252 OR 4210

It was another beautiful morning for 10 dedicated women to play volleyball. Once again, Notorious Knox with her poker cards thought that trying a little 10-card draw would be a good way to start the game. But being so early, Judy Jeep decided to confuse Notorious by telling her she had too many cards, not enough cards, and then more red cards than black. It worked but Varsity Val came to the rescue and gave instructions not to think – just react. Play became so fi erce that Bouncing Bono was repeatedly heard saying that she was glad she wasn’t in front of some of the spikes. But eventually, she did get turned around and became the target from behind. Th en, Th rilling Tressa and Kilowatt Keva were attempting to distract the other team (or maybe themselves) during the game by giving their daily schedule of who prepares the meals and their menus. Th at didn’t distract Chaotic Christine who continued to serve multiple points and fi nally the game. But that kept Launching Lauren busy trying to cover the entire court. She was so dazzling that everyone stopped to watch her and forgot to help her hit the ball. Aft er the play deteriorated, Gallant Gail decided to make her speech on proper volleyball techniques. But as the morning ended, all agreed that Shocking Cheryl deserved the award for Most Improved. Her serves and assists were always causing trouble for the opposing team. It’s getting toward the end of the season. Make sure you bring your badge and some water so you can join the fun before it’s too late.

Winterizing

Now is the time to plan and act on things we only remember when the cold north wind is blowing.

Windows often provide the biggest impact especially if you have single pane glass. Quality double glazed, low E windows properly installed can reduce heating costs by about 8%. Doors should be tight and weather-stripped.

If you have a floor exposed to the outside or crawl-space, insulate the floor. Be sure to caulk or use low expansion foam anywhere you see daylight. Paint to reduce the effect of weather. If you are losing too much heat through the roof, consider spray foam insulation.

Have your heating system serviced and cleaned every year. If you are considering replacing the heating system, evaluate a direct-vent unit; they are much more efficient and usually don’t require a chimney. Multi-zone units (heat pumps) for air conditioning and supplemental heat are being used more frequently; they are cost effective and don’t require ducting. Also clean fireplace flues.

Insulate pipes and eliminate any drafts. If you have problems with buried pipes, try installing rigid insulation under the ground surface and over the pipe.

Clear branches from overhead lines. Clean gutters.

Boeren Wins Sunfi sh!SUE BURUCHIAN

The ladies sixth sunfish race was exciting as the current Ladies Fleet Captain and previous Junior Fleet Captain, Irene Boeren, showed how to win a race. She did it with a huge lead almost half of the leg of the lake, with only her transom to be seen by the other racers! Way to go Irene! This is how it’s done-never look back! Highland Lakes can be a tricky lake when the winds are fluky.  To read them takes skill and patience. Irene showed both this past Thursday. Congratulations!

Results were:1- Irene, 2- Ellen, 3- Diane. You go girls!

Tip of the week: Tell-tales. Tell- tales are small sailing aids to help you read wind and therefore adjust your sails.

New sails have them attached to the sails (those green and red tabs). For those who don’t, we usually use old cassette tape (for those young’ins, ask your parents for some- they know what it is!) Place it on your lower boom  with a string size hanging down and, if possible, on a wire hanger or tell-tales frame (available at sailing store) on your front spar so you can see it as it flows each side of the spar. This will help you see wind/puffs and help you with wind direction that you might not be able to see on the water. As a general guide, the windward tell-tale should stream aft (backwards) with an occasional lift, the leeward front tell-tale should stream aft. If one tell-tale begins to spiral, it is indicating the sail has incorrect air flow on that side. Good luck!

Ally Latham and Joey Gaston Win!When I saw the forecast, I said “Finally, we’ll have wind!

Let’s just hope it holds true.” By the time the race started, the sustained winds were coming in at 9 mph and the gusts topped out at 15.7 mph as recorded by our cracker jack dock committee member, Mike Gaston. In Sport Fleet racing, both Ally Latham and Joey Gaston took turns on the victory podium. It was a joyous occasion, indeed, as it was their fi rst wins of the season. An exciting pair of races it was. Th e distance between them in both contests never grew greater than thirty feet. Ally secured the win in the fi rst race with Joey bearing down on her but he just didn’t have enough oomph in his sail to overtake her. Th e roles reversed in race #2 when Joey, this time determined to win his fi rst race, decided that a good plan of action would be not to take a nap this time on the downwind. I thought only horses sleep standing up until I saw a video last week of Joey sailing on a downwind. At any rate, congratulations to both of these aspiring young sailors whether competing awake or asleep.

Meanwhile, in the Open Fleet, Chip Ehrhardt continued his fl awless racing with an errorless fi rst race en route to his fi ft h win of the season. He would have swept the doubleheader had he not gotten back-winded on the fi nal tack to the fi nish. Rounding out the fi eld was Joe Gaston recording a pair of third places. Of course, there were only 3 racers but Joe looked at the bright side when he responded, “Th ird place ain’t too shabby.” See you on the line for the last race of the season.

MIKE GILLOOLEY, FLEET CAPTAIN 973-764-4185

We had our best turnout of the season with 13 FJ’s and a Hobie for the start of the fi rst race. It was quite a sight. Some of us who were sailing wished we could have seen what it looked like from land. Th e winds were extremely shift y prior to the race which made choosing the course diffi cult. Eventually, we went with a course 3 white. For those of you who aren’t familiar with our courses, a course 3 heads to the dam at the start of the race. Th e second race was shortened to a course 3 red as we all needed to get to the annual meeting.

Force Five SailingLOU IANNUCCI, FLEET CAPTAIN 973-764-7042

Another beautiful day on the lake, but every day is a beautiful day when you can hoist your sails and enjoy a good wind.

In this week’s episode of “As the Force 5 turns” we had the return of Grant Wisniewski, and welcome to your fi rst offi cial Force 5 race, James Sullivan. Both had the pleasure of enjoying the infamous “death roll” that the Force 5 boat loves to share with its skippers from time-to-time. Grant raced great in both races and had the lead in the second race, but the “death roll” got him before the last mark and he ended up on the wrong side of his boat. I think he did it on purpose just to give us older guys a chance!

A little depressing, but this Saturday, August 23, is our last two races of the season. Hopefully, we can get over that fi ve boat hump and get a couple of more boats out there to fi nish strong!
