USED/BROKEN EYEGLASS JOINT
LIONS CLUB PROJECT:
Just a reminder that we
are partnering with the
Antelope Lions Club
this year to collect used/
broken eyeglasses.
At our weekly meetings, we have a BIG BOX at
the rear of our meeting room for Rotarians to
deposit their unwanted glasses.
Over the long, holiday weekend, why not take a
few minutes to retrieve those old eyeglasses
which are just sitting in a drawer and bring
them to our next meeting.
Remember the adage: Your trash is
someone else’s treasure. Give someone
less fortunate an opportunity to give
new life to your old glasses.
Calling the meeting to order at 5:15 p.m.
President Elect Roland Wright
welcomed everyone to this week’s meeting.
Roland advised the assem bled group
that he was substituting for President
Dominic w ho has “turned the corner” and
is starting to feel better. He hopes to be back
with us soon. Gene Long, Sr. served as the
Greeter. Gordon Lipp led the group in the
pledge to the flag and PP Lee Wiggins
provided the invocation. PP Maureen
McBride served as the note taker and
PP Lee Wiggins served as the official
photographer. Thanks to everyone for
pitching in.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THIS
WEEK’S MEETING
Jordan Backhaus introduced our guest
speaker, Art Deardorf.
While raised on a cattle ranch in eastern
Oregon, Art had different interests for his
future.
He has since been involved with Nuclear
Power Plant Operations and traveled widely
in his position as a consultant for the Electric
Power Research Institute where he was
involved in needed software development. In
his career, Art has represented Nutech
Company as a consultant for Boiler Water
Reactor Contaminates and worked as an
engineer for such well-known companies as
General Atomics and Boeing.
His outside interests included flying his own
Piper Warrior and only stopping after 800
hours in the “driver’s” seat.
While working as a consultant for Nutech, he
spent a year in Spain where he learned to
speak Spanish.
Art becam e a Rotarian in 2007 joining
the Rotary Club of Groveland, CA. He later
joined the Rotary Club of Lincoln where he
served as President during the 2014-15 Rotary
club. Art is a multiple Paul Harris Fellow and
a member of the Paul Harris Society and
Bequest Society.
Art has been the Distr ict W ebm aster
since July 2015.
The focus of Art’s presentation w as the
importance of maintaining an interesting and
informative Website and Facebook Page.
A club’s website should provide information to
its members and others—meeting times,
location and upcoming programs. It should
tell visitors to the website what’s happening in
the club, i.e. fundraisers, etc.
On of the most important things in creating
the club’s website and Facebook page is to
remember that its probably where potential
members go to look for information about the
club and its members. His advice was to keep
the website CURRENT. Update it regularly.
Key elements to keep in mind:
A. Does the website show your members as
friendly and having fun?
B. Is it attractive?
i. Lots of pictures showing action.
Make sure it’s not too wordy or too long.
C.. Ask yourself, “what do visitors to the
website see when accessing the information on
their Smartphones.”
A primary goal of a club’s website is to
generate lots of Likes.
Increase a club’s reach by reposting to other
local sites.
Club Runner which is utilized by the majority
of clubs in the district is a vehicle for
THE HIGHLANDER Page 8 8/29/2016
integrating Administration, Communications,
Relationships and Events.
Our club initiated Club Runner a few years ago.
For those members who have not, as yet,
accessed Club Runner, contact CIO Richard
Hansen for your Usernam e and Passw ord.
This will open up a plethora of information about
Rotary, the District and our Club. Start your
new adventure today. Richard is ready —
awaiting your phone call.
For additional help navigating Club Runner,
contact Mo.
As is our usual custom, presented with a gift in
gratitude for his informative presentation.
Then, asked us to raise our glasses and join him
in a toast to Rotary Around the World. The
meeting was then adjourned.

District Webmaster Art Deardorf
