Valerie Gillespie picked up a saxophone for the first time when she was eight and was paid for her first professional gig at the age of fourteen. She majored in Classical Saxophone in college and obtained a Masters Degree in Jazz Saxophone from USF. A well-rounded player, Valerie might be seen one night playing classical pieces with the Florida Orchestra, the next evening playing with a jazz band in the park, then on Sunday morning you will usually find her playing in church. Valerie is an accomplished vocalist as well, with such influences as Diana Krall, Nancy Wilson, Shirley Horn, Carmen McRae, Diane Shuur, and many others. She has played with some of the great entertainers of our time, including; Chick Corea, Bobby McFerrin, Rosemary Clooney, George Burns, Ben Vereen, Joan Rivers, Ray Charles, Jon Faddis, Steve Allen, Anthony Newley. And, she has traveled extensively with the Xavier Cugat Orchestra in the U.S. and Japan. Locally, you may have seen Valerie playing with Dan McMillion, Theo Valentin, JoAnn Samson, Belinda Womack and many other very talented musicians from the Tampa Bay area.

Please sign up on the sheet on the bulletin board so we have some idea of how to set up the room.

A Life Lesson We Could Learn From Jane Fonda: Facebook Has It’s Good Points

A couple of weeks ago, Jane Fonda was featured on OWN’s Life Lessons. The 74-year old actress has some interesting and profound things to say about life.

She said, “Who were your parents? In order for us to know where we are going, we have to know where we have been (parents). In reviewing her own life, she told about her mother taking her own life when Jane was just a child and the fact that her father, Henry Fonda was cold and distant. Though she loved her parents and they loved her, she could best understand how she evolved into the person she is by studying their lives and background. One way we could review our life would be to reconnect with people we grew up with. It could be your neighbor, playmate, school friend or a teacher.

Dr Phil once made this assignment for the world Find somebody in your life that you haven’t talked to in a long time and reach out to him or her. Connect with someone from the past for continuity.

This is where Facebook and perhaps other social networks come in. Find that friend or acquaintance you have not seen or heard from in years and reconnect. That is the core of who you are and where you come from. This will help you better understand yourself.

Jane also had another thought, “You can be stronger in the very places you are broken (muscles). She said not to be afraid to go back in time and examine your life. It is like using muscles; you need to work them, maybe experience some soreness but in the end, those muscles will be stronger.

I have connected with one of my aunts and a few cousins. It has been a very rewarding experience. Jane is right. It really is important to know your family and some history they could relate to you that you would not ordinarily know.

A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC

We are happy to announce that March 8th Management will host A NIGHT OF JAZZ AT THE CLUBHOUSE with Valerie Gilespie. If you enjoy good music, you won‘t want to miss this event. Larry and I extend a personal invitation to all of you and hope this event will be a special night for everyone.

It will be a simple venue. Bring your own snacks and beverage of choice then sit back for an evening of pleasure. If you are unfamiliar with this gifted artist, just Google her name. On her home page she has links to several YouTube clips of her group.

Recently we had the opportunity to attend a live performance. I was thrilled when the trio played several lovely ballads in succession that I requested. Larry spoke with Valerie recently. She said, “Dancing is always welcomed.” For the most part, I like to sit back and watch the musicians.

I was intrigued to learn that Valerie too was from western Pennsylvania. She graduated from Carnegie-Mellon University then moved to New York City, but has lived most of her adult life in Dade City. My first encounter with her music was more than four years ago at the Salon on 7th. Jason, the owner was playing her beautiful, sometimes longing CD, It Can’t Be Christmas Without You. I was mesmerized with her lovely vocals and shortly thereafter I bought a copy for my pleasure. Later I read her impressive bio and knew I loved this girl. How could I not when Nancy Wilson’s music influenced her style and flavor as a developing performer. Valerie’s career began when she was a young girl and she has played with some of the great ones. So, join us for a night of joy.

January Meeting Minutes continued from page 1 Ken Nicholson, speaking as one of the organizers of the New Year’s Eve party, thanked the residents for attending the party. He said that a profit was not made, in fact, it came in over budget and the organizers were absorbing the loss. Geanne Raker made a motion that since this was a community event that the organizers should not have to absorb the loss and they should be reimbursed from the community treasury. Ken said he appreciated the thought but since it was a “private party,” with everyone being invited, the organizers would not consider taking the money from the community treasury.

Ken Nicholson, on behalf of the Ballot Committee, said there would not be an election for Community Treasurer and Secretary. Although the sign-up sheet was posted on the bulletin board for three months, only the current position holders, Anne Lafontaine (treasurer) and Barbara Nicholson (secretary) signed up.

Ken, now speaking as a resident, said that according to the Community Guidelines, Anne and Barbara cannot run again two years from now, and that other residents are going to have to step up and volunteer. He noted if there are no minutes, then no motions can be voted on. Ken said he personally feels that only having two people sign up as candidates borders on disgraceful. He added that our community depends on volunteerism and urged residents to get involved.

Roy Raker then made a motion for “Anne Lafontaine to continue as Treasurer and Barbara Nicholson to continue as Secretary”. The motion was seconded by Lorraine Davenport and approved by a show of hands by residents in attendance.

Chris Weegar said she would like to continue with the motion that Geanne Raker proposed to reimburse the organizers of the New Year’s Eve event for their loss from the community treasury. The motion was seconded by Charlie Basile. After considerable discussion, the motion “that community funds be used to reimburse the organizers of the New Year’s Eve event”, was voted on by a show of hands by the residents in attendance and was not approved.

Jo Basile said there is a group of ladies that crochets blankets for charities. They meet on Thursdays at 11:00 a.m. in the craft room. If interested in joining them and you don’t know how to crochet she will be happy to teach you.

Debbie Riss, on behalf of Nancy Meech, said if any Mah Jongg players need to order the 2012 Mah Jongg card to give the money to her and she will see that Nancy gets it. Debbie Riss reminded the residents that the plastic alligator that is in the swimming pool is not a toy to be played with. The alligator is there to keep the ducks from swimming in the pool and leaving their droppings. She also said if anyone should need to use the emergency 911 phone it is located outside the main entrance to the community clubhouse.

John Schaeffer said the handicap door to the main clubhouse does not close completely. He asked residents to please check the door when they leave to make sure it is securely closed. John also said that we should thank all the volunteers for their contributions to the community.

John Bongiardina asked the residents if there is any interest for an outing to Tampa Bay Downs Racetrack. The cost would be $35 per person for bus transportation, buffet and seating. The bus would leave at 10:30 a.m. and return around 4:30 p.m. A signup sheet is on the bulletin board.

The next community meeting will be held on Saturday, February 4, 2012.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:50 a.m.

Barbara Nicholson, Community Secretary

We gave it a valiant effort, even taking the

time to practice beforehand. But it

wasn’t enough to overcome our experienced

rivals. We are not deterred, however, and are looking forward to a

rematch. For those of you who

came to cheer us on, we thank you. Those of you who didn’t come missed a

fun time. We spent more time laughing and carrying on than we did

competing. We’re looking forward to doing it again,

and hope that more of you will join us next

time.

Please see the Clubhouse Bulletin Board for event details and sign up sheets for the Social Committee sponsored events. If you are interested in helping with a particular event or just in general, contact any one of the Social Committee members. They can always use help with planning, ticket sales, setup,

decorating, serving, and breakdown of setups.

We are currently in need of volunteers to help with the sale of tickets on Bingo nights, before Community meetings, and immediately before events. If you are willing to help, please contact Ken White. Thanks.

Ceramics Classes

Ceramics classes are held every Tuesday from 11:30 to 1:30PM. There is a $5 charge per session: $4 for the instructor, $1 to the kitty to keep supplies stocked. A large selection of glazes and acrylics is available in our craft room for student use and our own kiln is used to fire all pieces. A small selection of bisque pieces is available from which to choose, but for greater choice students are encouraged to obtain their own greenware or bisque pieces from local suppliers. Regular participants are to bring their own brushes and cleaning supplies, however first timers can borrow supplies to see if they like it enough to continue before they purchase their own supplies.

QUILTING CLASSES

The ladies have been preparing to display some of their quilted projects at the upcoming Pioneer Museum Quilt Show. A framed landscape wall-hanging that has been hand appliquéd and machine quilted, along with a quilted door banner, and a tropical machine pieced and machine quilted bed quilt, as well as a hand appliquéd and hand quilted landscape wall-hanging, and a machine pieced and quilted throw quilt are some of the items that have been entered into the quilt show.

In addition the quilters are completing a bargello placemat and will soon begin a matching a bargello table runner. A class dedicated to making the bargello table runner will be offered on Wednesdays during March. A sign-up list will be posted in the clubhouse for the class. Bargello projects are fun to make and the first bargello type quilting the class has created.

Complete information for the three week class will be in next month's newsletter. Let me know if you’re interested.

Lorraine Davenport, Instructor

Highlands Choral

We practice on Wednesday mornings in the clubhouse library from 10:30 AM to noon. We are learning numbers that we hope to eventually perform in a concert for Highlands residents. Barb Hall is our conductor and Chris Weegar is our accompanist.

The songs in our repetoire are fun and should create an interesting concert.

If you are interested in joining, please come any Wednesday morning and join the music.

All residents are welcome. No try outs are required. Sandra & David Neil

Some nuns at...a small convent were left a modest estate. Each nun got $50 in cash to give away as she saw fit. Each nun announced how she would spend her bequest. Sister Ann decided to give her share to the first poor person she saw. Right then, she saw a beggar across the street that looked down on his luck. She walked to the man, slipped him the $50, and said, "I'm Sister Ann. Godspeed, my good man." The next day, the man returned to the convent and rang the bell. "I'd like to see Sister Ann," he said. The nun at the door refused this, but offered to give a message. The man said, "Give her this $100 and tell her Godspeed came in second in the third race at Aqueduct."
