Lent is about Almsgiving, Prayer and Fasting. Almsgiving: The needy are all around us: children and the old, the sick and the suffering, families and individuals, next-door neighbours and people overseas. It is easy to forget them. Instead of just looking out for ourselves, we should see those in need. We can give some of our time, some of our talent or material resources. Almsgiving is not just for the rich. Poor or rich, we all have something to give. Whatever we give, though, it should be something of ourselves, something that costs us. Jesus teaches that when we give, we receive some blessing from God in return. What shall we give to the needy this Lent? When deciding please be generous. After all, before us is the great alms Jesus gave: "He loved us, and gave himself up for us." Prayer : “Pray to your Father”. The Lenten season calls us to pray. Jesus teaches us that prayer is much more than saying words. "Go into your room, and close the door, and pray to your Father in secret." Before you pray, enter the inner room of your heart. Shut the door to the noise, the trivial things, the countless cares grabbing for attention. Put them aside. In the quiet place of your heart, with faith as your guide, speak to your God. A gracious Father listens, and he knows what you need. God helps us pray in this season. Fasting: "When you fast do not look gloomy," Jesus says. Today's consumer society looks on fasting itself as gloomy. Urging everyone to eat, drink, and buy more and more, our world today has made fasting unfashionable. This Lent, recognising the hold things have on us, let us try, with God's help, to keep them in their right place. Some reasonable abstaining from food, drink and entertainments can help us do that. 40 DAYS OF LENT, 40 GOOD DEEDS—Yesterday each student was given their own chart to record their good deeds during Lent. Please keep these charts on your fridge or somewhere that is easily accessible so that students can be reminded of the need to complete acts of kindness and good will throughout Lent. Regular reminders from parents would also be appreciated. FEAST OF SAINT PATRICK—This year St. Patricks Day falls on a Sunday. We will be celebrating our feast day tomorrow. All students are invited to wear greento school tomorrow and we will be holding some fun games and activities tomorrow afternoon as a way to celebrate St. Patricks Day as well as the National Day Against Bullying. Dear Parents and Members of St. Patrick’s School Community,

SUNDAY 10 MARCH—1st SUNDAY OF LENT— Last Sunday was the first Sunday of Lent.

Jesus teaches that when we give, we receive some blessing from God in return. What shall we give to the needy this Lent? When deciding please be generous. After all, before us is the great alms Jesus gave: "He loved us, and gave himself up for us."

Prayer : “Pray to your Father”.

JUNIOR CLASS Our Foundation students had their first Wednesday at school this week, and next week they will experience their first five days in a row! They may be a little tired by the end of this week and next.

Do you know the story of The Three Little Pigs? We are reading it this week and our students would love to retell it to you. Tomorrow we will read the wolf’s side of the story and see what he has to say for himself.

“Doubles, doubles, I can add doubles! It’s no trouble for me to add doubles!!” We are learning how to add using doubles and doubles plus one more. Dominoes are a great tool for this activity – if anyone has any at home they do not use anymore please feel free to donate them to our classroom (or normal decks of cards too)!!

SENIOR CLASS The Senior class is having heaps of fun with our current Art focus of Drama! The students are working in groups to perform different plays. We have a script about astronauts, a bank robbery, a vacation gone wrong and even a murder mystery. The Seniors have been working collaboratively to create props and backgrounds to ensure their story is engaging for the audience. The students have been working very hard on their plays an we can’t wait to perform them to the Junior class.

EASTER—Pope Francis said that “every person ought to have the awareness that purchasing is always a moral – and not simply an economic – act.” Are you buying chocolate this Easter? It is estimated that up to 30 million people are trapped in slavery globally. The United Nations estimates that one in every three victims of human trafficking is a child. Much of the chocolate we consume in Australia is made with cocoa beans picked by children, many of whom have been enslaved. These children don’t know what the cocoa beans are used for and most won’t ever get to taste chocolate. Spread the word about slavery-free Easter chocolate and enjoy chocolate that carries the slavery free symbols on the wrapper.

EVACUATION AND LOCKDOWN DRILLS—We regularly practise evacuation and lockdown drills at St. Patrick’s School. Our first drill for 2019 was held yesterday and everyone coped really well. We will have another practise of a different type of drill before the end of term. Regular practice of these drills helps everyone understand what is required in the case of an emergency.

2019 AFL FOOTY TIPPING—We will again

conduct a Footy Tipping competition for the upcoming AFL season for those who are interested. Details will be sent home early next week.

CONGRATULATIONS SHAI—Shai is the first student this year to read 30 books at home. Regular reading of books that are easy for children to read are an important tool to develop fluency and expression. Shai is a great example of a student who reads regularly and who enjoys reading.

CONGRATULATIONS JOBE—Yesterday Jobe attended a cricket clinic to showcase his skills as he ‘tried out’ for the School Sport Victoria (SSV) State 12 & Under Cricket Team . Jobe had a fabulous time and commented that it was ‘all good’ and he enjoyed the opportunity to show his batting and bowling. Jobe now waits for the remaining trials to be conducted before finding out if he has been selected for the Victoria team.

UPCOMING EVENTS

SPEECH VISITS—Sarah’s next visit is Wednesday 20 March. If your child works with Sarah their appointment for next Wednesday is attached to today’s newsletter.

REMINDERS—

WEAR GREEN TOMORROW—To recognise St Patrick’s Day (17 March) and National Day Against Bullying students are encouraged to dress in green. We will involve them in a variety of fun activities during the day to engage them in the message that bullying in any form is not tolerated at school or anywhere—focussing on respecting and cooperating with others and increasing their knowledge of the impact that bullying has on others.

NO LUNCH ORDERS TOMORROW—Don’t forget that Lunch Orders are not available until further notice. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

ST PATRICK’S QUIZ NIGHT—Don’t forget to contact Helen for your tickets to the Quiz Night on Saturday 16 March. It’s sure to be a lot of fun.

As always, please contact the school if you have any questions about what is happening at St. Patrick’s School.

Kathryn Bendall, Principal.
