Dear Parents and Members of St. Patrick’s School Community,

SUNDAY 2nd SEPTEMBER—22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time— Last Sunday’s gospel from Mark (7:1-8) depicted Jesus challenging the accepted understanding of what can make a person unclean. Jesus was constantly challenging religious laws that placed unnecessary burdens on people, and distracted their attention from more important issues. Rather than worrying about whether the food they were eating was acceptable, Jesus wanted people to think about the lives they led and how they treated other people.

Sadly we as Christians are just as guilty of getting caught up in petty politics associated with religion, rather than facing the real challenges brought to us by our faith. The core Christian discipleship is the dual command of Jesus to love God and love our neighbour as ourselves. We are encouraged to live by God’s law which is designed to form our hearts so that we will live in a way that ensures everyone’s wellbeing is cared for. God’s law is a special gift to us that touches and forms us so that we can love, respect and forgive ourselves and others.

CHILD PROTECTION WEEK—National Child Protection Week starts annually on Father’s Day each September and it is an opportunity for government, business and community groups to come together to promote the safety and well being of children. The enduring message of National Child Protection Week is the ‘Protecting children is everyone’s business’ and that all Australians should play a part in ensuring that children are protected. The little things we do every day can help to create safer environments for children. For example we can -

Be kind to children and their parents.

Respect young people.

Be a good role model around children.

Get involved in our local community.

Look out for signs of abuse or neglect and talk to an expert if you suspect something is wrong.

Always take reports of abuse seriously.

Avoid blame and don’t judge; ask what you can do to help instead.

Listen to the needs of children and spend time with them.

FATHER’S DAY BREAKFAST—Thank you to everyone who came to our Father’s Day Breakfast last Friday. It was fabulous to have so many fathers, grandfathers and father-like figures join us and the children. The students had a great time playing with their dads before heading into class to start the day. A huge thank you to Lynda Donnell for cooking the BBQ and to all staff who came in Jobe

JUNIOR CLASS In Maths we have been able to use some of the recently purchased resources to extend our understandings. T hese include number caps for counting with unifix, flip charts for renaming numbers and family fact triangle cards. Special emphasis has been placed on reading mathematical questions and deciding what strategy is needed to solve them. This can range from simple story sentences to more complex information diagrams.

Our book in Shared Reading is Indigenous Sea Creatures and we have been focusing on the words invisible, clamber, amidst, swift,

mammals and grazes on the vocab chart. The

Foundation students have learnt the sound 'z' for

zip and 'zz' for buzz. Level 2 Spelling group have

been working on (c/sc) words.

In P.E. this week, we joined in with the Seniors and did some skipping practice for Jump Rope For Heart.

During Integrated Studies students have been researching interesting facts about New Zealand and China. We learnt the Chinese words for dog, cat, fish, cow, sheep and rabbit.

We are currently drawing Indigenous inspired art pieces to put in the Nhill Show during our Art/Technology hour.

SENIOR CLASS The senior students have been reading a poem called Black Jack the Bold during Shared Reading. They have been exploring the purpose and power of rhyming verses throughout a poem.

During the writing block the students have been experimenting with alliteration, personification and metaphors within their narrative writing.

In Numeracy the class has been studying Data representation. This unit enables the students to display data using various forms, depending on the type of information being collected.

In Religious Education the seniors have been focusing on the unit God’s Holy Word. They have been exploring the meaning behind the parable of The Sower, and how it relates to the world today.

During Art students have been experimenting with shading and tones, creating artwork with a focus on light and dark.

early to set up the hall and cook the toast and put the muffins together. Thanks also to Lisa Braybrook, Emma Dickinson and Michelle Dickinson who also assisted with the preparation and cleaning up at the end. Many hands make light work and I think that everyone had a great start to the day. We hope that all our fathers had a relaxing day on Sunday as well.

SAC FATHER’S DAY RAFFLE—Tim Cramer was the lucky winner of our Father’s Day raffle. He was very grateful to receive his prize on Friday afternoon. The total amount raised for this raffle was $1277.20. A might effort for our small school.

READING AWARDS—Erin Fraser-Klix and Sophie McEldrew both received Reading Awards at today’s assembly. Both girls have read 30 books at home so far this year and they have only recently developed the skills to read independently at home. Congratulations to both students.

SCHOOL ADVISORY COUNCIL REPORT—At Tuesday night’s SAC meeting the following policies were recommended to Father Peter for ratification -

Refund

School Fees

Pastoral Care.

The Grounds and Maintenance Working Party’s report included the successful tenderer for the replacement of the shade sails (Carey Covers) and the grounds contract (Gone Tropo). We acknowledge and thank Matt Bone for his work in keeping our grounds neat and tidy in the previous 7 years. The Social Justice Working Party is finalising the order form and prices for our coffee fundraiser and it will be sent home very soon for you to consider. The Fundraising Working Party is completing organisational details for an upcoming event which involves selling coffee (using WithOneBean coffee) and muffins at the Luv-a-Duck 50th birthday celebrations on 27 October. Hopefully a number of families will be able to assist with the preparation of muffins and the making of coffee for this special occasion. A SAC member will be in contact closer to the date to seek your input and support. SAC also commended the Fundraising Working Party for their efforts in raising $1277.20 from the Father’s Day raffle. We also appreciate the work of our families who also sold tickets to neighbours and friends for this raffle. Our next meeting is set for Tuesday 30 October.

DENTAL PACKS—Thank you to the Nhill Dental Clinic who recently provided a pack containing a toothbrush, toothpaste and timer to every St Patrick’s School student. This is a generous donation and emphasises the importance of caring for our teeth on a daily basis.

STUDENT WORK—Last Friday, Sophie, a Foundation student, completed an amazing piece of writing. Maybe she needs to have an egg and bacon muffin every day so she’s got lots of energy for writing stories. Well done Sophie.

FOOTY TIPPING UPDATE

This report was inadvertently missed in last week’s newsletter.

Well done to Ash Dickinson, 135, who narrowly won the footy tipping from Mrs Pilgrim 134. Mother and son, Emma and Jobe finished 3rd on 118. Having tipped the whole season prior to round 1, it is always interesting to see who does well.

Interesting facts:-

Heath was the only tipper to select 9 in any one round (Round 22). Mrs Rintoule was the only tipper to get zero (round 18). Mrs Rintoule followed a pattern of away team, home team for the whole season. Stew-art Mackenzie and family relative Pam had their own battle. Stew tipped all the home teams for the whole season and finished on 104 and Pam chose all the away teams and ended the year on 93.

Thanks to everyone who participated, and also to Mrs Pilgrim and the students who helped correct and tally each week.

Final results are:-
