TUMC Mission Statement:

“To ignite such a passion,

for Jesus Christ

and His teachings, that it

sets our world on fire.”

Dear Trinity Church family,

“Enter His gates with thanksgiving, and His courts with

praise! Give thanks to Him, bless His name!”

Psalm 100: 4

This month begins the procession of year-end holidays:

Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s. The only way to

“loathe” or dislike these holidays, it seems to me, is to

NOT do as the psalmist suggests—keep focused on

THANKSGIVING.

If it’s thanksgiving to God at our center, I can’t IMAGINE

how these days aren’t filled with blessings. Whenever

we’re discouraged, depressed or feeling a lack of any

kind, “give thanks to Him!”

Yours in Christ, Pastor Jim

The Holidays are extremely difficult for families who live in poverty. As a child I

lived it. I saw the agony on the face of my

Mom and Dad, knowing that without help

they could not provide Christmas for my

siblings and me. Every year we received

help through Social Services, the business

community, and local Churches. Together

they provided for us so that we could have a

very Merry Christmas.

Trinity UMC provides a very Merry

Christmas for many families in a similar way

through the Giving Tree Ministry.

This year we will have 3 Giving Trees set up in the Gathering Room. The trees will

be in the Gathering Room starting November 19.

1. The Tree of Angels

2. The Light in the Mountain Tree (formerly known as Roughside of the Mountain)

3. The Family Giving Tree

The Tree of Angels will be covered with tags that describe the child’s age, gender,

and a brief description of what the child or parent is asking for. We ask that this

year you try to purchase everything that is on the tag. If you are unable to purchase

everything, maybe you can find another family to work with you. There will also be

a few tags requesting donations of gift wrapping paper and gift wrapping supplies.

We are also asking for Children’s Bibles and Children’s Bible Story Books.

The Light in the Mountain Giving Tree is for our Brothers and Sisters at Light in the

Mountain Church in New Mexico. We are asking for $25.00 Wal-Mart gift cards. You

can actually start purchasing these now. If you purchase the gift cards early, just

drop them off in the Church Office or place them in the box near the tree between

Sunday, November 19 and Sunday, December 10.

The Family Giving Tree is for Families in our Congregation and the Local

Community who are experiencing difficult times. We are asking for gift cards of any

kind, in any amount. These cards can also be dropped off early in the Church Office

or placed in the box near the tree between Sunday, November 19 and Sunday,

December 10.

All of the gifts/giftcards need to be returned to the Gathering Room by noon,

Sunday December 10, 2017.

The youth would like to thank the Green

Family, Mr. John, Ms. Karen, Jack, Will,

Sam and Maggie, for hosting our

Bonfire night at their home. We had a

great time.

Over the Summer and into the Fall, I

have been doing some research and

reading in an attempt to make youth

group more relevant for those who

attend our meetings. I came across a

book, The Seven Checkpoints: Seven

Principles Every Teenager Needs to

Know, by Andy Stanley and Stuart Hall. I found this very interesting reading and want to

share the Seven Checkpoints with you.

Checkpoint #1: Authentic Faith: Putting your Trust in God. The Principle is: God can be trusted; He will do all He has promised to do.

The Critical Question to ask is: Are your students trusting God with the critical areas of their lives?

The Key Passage is: Proverbs 3:5-6.

CheCkpoint #2: Spiritual DiSCiplineS: Seeing with goD’S eyeS. The Principle is: When you see as God sees, you will do as God says.

The Critical Question to ask is: Are your students developing a consistent devotional and prayer

life?

The Key Passage is: Romans 12:2.

Checkpoint #3: Moral Boundaries: Paving the Way for Intimacy. The Principle is: Purity paves the way to intimacy.

The Critical Question to ask is: Are your students establishing and maintaining good moral

boundaries?

The Key Passage is: 1 Thessalonians 4:3-9.

Checkpoint #4: Healthy Friendships: Choosing Friends for Life. The Principle is: Your friendships determine the direction and quality of your life.

The Critical Question to ask is: Are your students establishing healthy friendships and avoiding

unhealthy ones?

The Key Passage is: Proverbs 13:20.

THE HIGHLIGHTER

The Sunday School Middle School students would like to thank the congregation for

their wonderful support in donating items for their collection in the Gathering Room.

What was originally intended to go to hurricane victims changed due to our drop off

point having to deliver things several weeks earlier than planned. However, we

wanted to let everyone know that the items went locally to another good cause. This

past Sunday (October 22) our group was able to take everything to the ECHO Shelter

for our 1st Destination Unknown. One of the staff members there gave us a tour of the

building and explained to us how things work. We met some of the residents,

including some sweet kids!! It was a perfect wrap-up for us to see truly where our

donations went, made us appreciate what we have, and also left us with an ongoing

option for a local way to serve others and to live out the Fruits of the Spirit (what we

have been studying). THANK YOU AGAIN FOR SUPPORTING US!!

CheCkpoint #5: wiSe ChoiCeS: walking wiSely in a Fool’S worlD. The Principle is: Walk Wisely.

The Critical Question to ask is: Are your students making wise choices in every area of their lives?

The Key Passage is: Ephesians 5:15-17.

Checkpoint #6: Ultimate Authority: Finding Freedom under God. The Principle is: Maximum freedom is found under God’s Authority.

The Critical Question to ask is: Are your students submitting to the authorities God has placed

over them?

The Key Passage is: Romans 13:1-2.

Checkpoint #7: Others First: Considering Others before Yourself. The Principle is: When you make yourself nothing, you’re really something.

The Critical Question to ask is: Are your students putting the needs of others ahead of their own?

The Key Passage is: Philippians 2:3-11.

These seven checkpoints are important for our youth to know before they go off to face the world

after high school. Making them part of their lives now will help them in the future.

As we go through the school year, we are trying to plan lessons and programs around these

important checkpoints. The Checkpoints are posted in the youth room for

the youth to read and apply in their own lives.

Safe Nights at Trinity

Are you ready to serve in deed and in truth? We really need your help with Safe

Nights this season. Safe Nights is not an easy mission, but I see God’s hand in it each

year. It is so evident to me that He is abundantly blessing the Safe Nights ministry

throughout Calvert County.

This year we needed nine replacement cots, and we were able to get them replaced

with a smile and no hassle or cost whatsoever. When a church had to back out of

hosting for a season, or needed to reschedule their week, another was right there to

jump forward and fill the gap. We even received donations from the Holiday Inn that

covered Safe Nights linens for two churches who did not have any of their own linens.

The Calvert Mobile Wellness van is contacting us and asking to help us all season long

with medical needs for guests. Thanks to God. This kind of synchronicity is surely His

doing. It is a blessing to be here to witness all of the good that is happening for this

ministry. I so hope you can help us with Trinity’s week. Please volunteer whatever

you can do to help those who have so little in this world to be able to sleep in a warm

and safe space, out of the cold of winter.

Trinity Safe Nights is December 3 through 10, 2017 at Trinity.

Sign-up sheets to volunteer are in the Gathering Room:

† Overnight monitor shifts (6 to midnight and midnight to 6) are the most

desperate need and require at least one male and one female to be present.

You are welcome to work both shifts if you choose.

† Dinners are our next most pressing need, and are typically served at 7pm.

Dinners should serve approximately 20 – 25 people.

† Breakfasts can be served at 6am or dropped off the night before and warmed by

the overnight monitors.

† Donations of food (such as bag lunch items) and personal care items (such as (Continued on page 11)

But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth. – 1 John 3:17-18

deodorant) are always appreciated.

Safe Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are December 24 and 25.

Trinity UMC is hosting guests for the Safe Christmas Day, December 25 from 7am to

7pm. We will be serving the Christmas Morning breakfast from 8am to 11am. After

the breakfast closes down at 11am, we will host the guests until approximately

7pm, so we will need some generous and loving people who are willing to be

monitors during the day on Christmas Day. This is also on the same sign-up sheets

that we are using for our Safe Nights Week. The sheets are in the Gathering Room

on the Volunteer table.

Safe Sunday on Christmas Eve is hosted at Mount Olive UMC. Mount Olive has

reached out to all of the Safe Nights churches for help staffing this holiday. Every

host coordinator is reaching out to their congregations to see if we can help Mount

Olive. I am including this here in case some may be willing to help Mt. Olive with

their need. I don’t have a signup sheet for this one, as it is not Trinity’s

commitment, but I can work with the host coordinators there, to help if you are

interested in serving Christmas Eve, or any day between Christmas and New Years

at Mount Olive.

Please contact me at [email protected], or 410-205-2720, if you are able to

help at Trinity or our sister church, Mount Olive. Safe Nights needs your

participation and your prayers. Blessings to all of you in this holy season. Thank

you in advance for all of your help,

have not only asked

not to hear from

God, but we have

taken Him out of

virtually every part

of our lives except

Church. It was an

epiphany for me

when Pastor Jim

recently preached

on this. We have

taken God out of

most of our lives,

save maybe one

hour a week on

Sunday. Yet when a

disaster or tragedy

comes, we ask

where God is in this?

The Israelites didn’t

want to hear from

God out of fear. We

don’t make God a

bigger part of our

everyday life

because of

arrogance. We have

come to think we do

it ourselves when

things are going

well, instead of

giving thanks for the

blessings the Lord

has provided. The

greatest blessing

being Jesus Christ,

His teachings and

His sacrifice out of

love.

When the people

saw the thunder and

lightning and heard

the trumpet and

saw the mountain in

smoke, they

trembled with fear.

They stayed at a

distance and said to

Moses, “Speak to us

yourself and we will

listen. But do not

have God speak to

us or we will die.”

May the peace and

joy of the Lord be

In the scripture

above, it would

seem that even

around 1450 B.C.,

people didn’t want

to hear from God

directly. All God had

done was deliver

them from slavery,

provide them with

the things they

needed and in this

book of Exodus gave

them the framework

for living in peace -

The Ten

Commandments.

Fast forward to the

21st century. We

In the New Covenant

class, we recently

watched and had

discussion about the

movie, A Case for

Jesus Christ. This

movie is a story of

columnist Lee

Stroeble’s effort to

prove that Jesus

Christ was a hoax of

what he termed the

Christianity cult.

Through Mr.

Stroeble’s research

to disprove Jesus, he

came to accept

Jesus. He

interviewed many

learned scholars,

who were believers

and who were not,

and could not find

evidence to refute

Jesus. In our

discussion, we

talked of a frame of

mind that too often

exemplifies the

modern Christian.

What do we have to

lose? It doesn’t hurt

to believe and if it is

all true, we come out

ahead in the end.

This kind of believer

sits on the fence,

goes to church on

Sunday but doesn’t

For the Beauty

of the Earth

Verse 1

For the beauty of the earth

For the glory of the skies

For the love which from our birth

Over and around us lies

Chorus

Lord of all to Thee we raise

This our hymn of grateful praise

Verse 2

For the beauty of each hour

Of the day and of the night

Hill and vale and tree and flower

Sun and moon and stars of light

Verse 3

For the joy of ear and eye

For the heart and mind's delight

For the mystic harmony

Linking sense to sound and sight

Verse 4

For the joy of human love

Brother sister parent child

Friends on earth and friends above

For all gentle thoughts and mild

Verse 5

For Thy church that evermore

Lifteth holy hands above

Offering up on every shore

Her pure sacrifice of love

We sing

beautiful

songs and

hymns

every Sunday.

Do you ever

really listen
