The Highlighter Summer 2009 1

Letter from the PresidentDear Alumnae and Friends of Catholic High,

Summer greetings from The Catholic High School of Baltimore! Whether you are an alumna, parent, or friend, I am confi dent that you will be impressed, as before, with the great news of our alumnae, students, and recent graduates.

Our Mission Statement boasts of our commitment to challenge our school community to academic excellence, to responsible leadership, and to Christian community service. As you read the exciting pages of The Highlighter, you will see that the words of our mission statement are vibrantly alive at Catholic High and among our alumnae.

The end of another year brings many highlights to our school community, several of which are included in this edition. Just a sample: on May 26, Catholic High’s 67th graduating class received diplomas at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen, while the 50th anniversary class, the Class of 1959, was honored. Prior to graduation, we were busy celebrating with our students, staff, and alumnae in a variety of ways, including our yearly May Procession, Employee Recognition Liturgy, National Honor Society induction, and being designated a Maryland Green School.

I am certain that as you read this edition, you will again notice the many ways Catholic High continues to touch the lives of our alumnae. Regardless of your year of graduation, Catholic High’s grateful daughters enjoy being connected to their Alma Mater. We are most fortunate as a school community to make this claim, and I thank our 12,000 graduates for your consistent support and advocacy of Catholic High.

My prayer is that you continue to be blessed for the many gifts you give back to our school, and that you let your light shine each day in refl ection of your years of life and learning at Catholic High.

Lux Tua Luceat!

Barbara D. Nazelrod, Ph.D. ’68President

After 12 years, Catholic High bids farewell to Mr. Lynn DiGennaro, Technology Consultant. Mr. DiGennaro began volunteering in the Technology Department in 1997, helping Mr. Bob Fletcher manage and maintain the network. Not only was he an employee, he was a Catholic High parent. His daughters, Michelle and Gina, graduated from Catholic High in 1999 and 2005.

Dr. Nazelrod congratulates Mr. Bob Fletcher for his 25 years of service to Catholic High.

Letter from the Offi ce of Institutional Advancement

2 The Catholic High School of Baltimore

Dear Alumnae, Parents and Friends of Catholic High,

To advance the mission of The Catholic High School of Baltimore, it is our policy to seek external funding from donors and foundations. Successful funding requires increased awareness of Catholic High’s mission and work. The Offi ce of Institutional Advancement supports, encourages and promotes the school’s academic mission. It develops the fl ow of external funds, fosters relationships with alumnae and other constituencies, and provides communications support and public visibility.

As another fi scal year ends (June 30, 2009), we are grateful for all you have done to continue the legacy of Catholic High through your generous gifts to the 2008–2009 Annual Fund. As a reminder, if your checks arrive after June 30, they will not appear until the 2009-2010 Annual Report of Donors.

Please enjoy these wonderful, peaceful days of summer. Our offi ce remembers you in prayer and asks that you remember us.

Most sincerely,

Marcy Shea-Frank ’63Director of Institutional Advancement

Grandparents’ Day 2009...The Catholic High community celebrated grandparents at the annual Grandparents’ Day Liturgy, held on April 29, 2009.

The Catholic High School of Baltimore achieved the Maryland Green School Designation through the Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education (MAEOE). Catholic High is the fi rst Catholic high school in Baltimore to receive this distinction. Since 1999, the MAEOE has sponsored the Maryland Green School Awards Program that recognizes Maryland public and private schools, pre-K through 12th grades, that “use their school site and curricular instruction to prepare students to understand and act on current and future environmental challenges facing all Marylanders; model environmental best management practices (BMPs) in building and landscape design, operation, and maintenance; and build and maintain partnerships with the local community to enhance environmental learning and to design and implement projects and programs that result in a healthier environment.”

“We are delighted that Catholic High is Baltimore’s fi rst Catholic high school to receive the Green School designation,” said Ms. Carrie Arnold, Director of Admissions and co-chair of the school’s Green School Committee. “The Catholic High community worked diligently to receive this status and will continue to work toward the sustainability of all its environmental initiatives.”

Catholic High spent the past two years improving its gardens, planting trees, and participating in Baltimore City’s single-stream recycling program. The school revived its natural wetland as part of the Herring Run Watershed – including preserving a young weeping willow tree and cattails. Students, parents, and members of the faculty and staff, worked together to create the school’s outdoor classroom, containing a sustainable garden using only native Maryland plants.

In addition, the administration encouraged teachers to integrate Green School initiatives into the curriculum by having students write essays and complete special projects pertaining to the environment. Catholic High invested in “green” capital projects by installing water fountains that employ hi-tech fi ltration components that are attached to the current water lines, thus decreasing the use of bottled water. A high-effi ciency gas-fi red, tankless water heater was installed in December 2008, and two more units are planned for installation this year. Two high effi ciency gas boilers replaced old boilers in the school and are expected to decrease gas consumption by 30%. Catholic High will also install rain barrels to sustain the gardens on school grounds. Lastly, low E, double pane thermal windows were installed in the fall of 2007 to reduce energy consumption by 25%-30%.

“Being designated a Maryland Green School refl ects the values of the Sisters of St. Francis, who sponsor Catholic High,” said Dr. Barbara D. Nazelrod, President of The Catholic High School of Baltimore. “We are most honored to receive this worthy recognition, and vow to continue to promote positive environmental behaviors for our entire school community.”

Mrs. Colleen Guler Receives Mission AwardEach year The Catholic High School of Baltimore honors a faculty/staff member who embodies the Franciscan spirit with the Mission Award. This year, Mrs. Colleen Guler received the award for her dedication and hard work in making the Catholic High community a better place.

In addition to teaching social studies, she also oversees the Water Committee. This year the committee took 21 students to 12 Archdiocesan schools over a three-week period to present information about serious water issues facing our region, country, and the world. The committee’s project was the Lifestraw Project in which members gave presentations about the use of the Lifestraw to prevent water-born diseases. The group collected over $1,000 for that cause.

“I feel very honored to be selected for the Mission Award,” said Mrs. Guler. “So many staff and faculty members are just as deserving of the award because they give so willingly of their time to make this school a place that encourages young women to grow and learn. I would not be able to do some of the extra things that I do at Catholic High if it were not for the encouragement of the administration and cooperation of other staff members. It is truly a supportive community.”

Sister Margaret Xavier Romans, OSF ’60 - Teacher of the YearSr. Margaret Xavier Romans ’60 was elected by her peers to receive the Teacher of the Year Award for Catholic High, presented by the Archdiocese of Baltimore Division of Catholic Schools in April. Sr. Margaret taught in Catholic schools in North Carolina, Delaware, Florida, and Maryland for a total of 46 years, and began her tenure at Catholic High in 2004.

Sister is the Director of the Archangel Program in which she oversees ninth and tenth grade students who enter high school with lower than average grades or test scores. Sr. Margaret strives to develop her students’ confi dence in their verbal, reading, and math abilities. She has an engaging teaching style that actively involves her students and gives them the opportunity to participate in class via handouts, white boards, or trips to the chalkboard.

“I like the challenge of enabling my students to fi nd in themselves the power to learn, which allows them to take ownership in their education,” Sr. Margaret said. “I encourage questions in my classroom, as well as laughter. It makes my students feel comfortable enough to be who they are and to expand their thinking.”

Catholic High’s Administrative Team has also nominated Sr. Margaret for the National Teacher Hall of Fame award. “I’m in awe and overjoyed that my peers gifted me with this award,” she said. “I’ve always enjoyed teaching. I’m not the world’s best teacher, but I do my best everyday.”

Forensics Team Competes at National FinalsThe Catholic High School Forensics Team let its light shine brightly at the District Finals held on March 21, 2009 at Loyola Blakefi eld. Shelby Kestler and Shannon Krehely placed second and fourth in Oral Declamation. Courtney Wittstadt placed fourth in Original Oratory. T’ara Smith and Delisha Thompson placed fi fth in Duo Interpretation. All fi ve of these students earned places on the Baltimore team that competed at the National Catholic Forensic League Finals, held over the weekend of May 22 in Albany, New York. “Our students performed very well and are to be commended,” said Mr. Howard Scott, Forensics Moderator and foreign language teacher. “The tournament was the largest ever and the competition was incredible. We are looking forward to continuing this success next year.”

This year Catholic High introduced golf into the Spring Athletics program. The inaugural team consisted of 12 members led by Mr. Paul DeJuliis as Head Coach, father of Gabriella DeJuliis ’11. The team practiced four days a week – two days at Sparrows Point Country Club and two days at Catholic High or the driving range. They competed in fi ve tournaments, only losing one, and ended their season by winning the IAAM “B” Championship on Tuesday, May 5.

“I had no idea that we would be so successful in our very fi rst year,” said Mrs. Kari McBride, Director of Athletics. “I knew that we had some good players, but I was very impressed at how quickly the beginners improved their skills. I was also impressed with their dedication and patience in learning a new sport.”

“When I think about how successful the team and the season have been, I still can’t believe it,” said Mr. Paul DeJuliis, Head Coach. “The girls played their hearts out during the season and especially at the Championship Tournament. I couldn’t have written a better script. It truly is a Cinderella story, especially since it was our fi rst season in the league.”

All but one team member will be returning next year, which makes next year’s outlook promising and exciting!

Senator Katherine A. Klausmeier ’68Submitted by: Cathy Kerns ’05

Over the years, Catholic High has helped young women emerge from its foundations with a strong academic background and a personal strength rooted in Franciscan traditions.

Katherine A. Nossel Klausmeier ’68 truly embodies the values of Catholic High.

Senator Klausmeier is not only a loving and dedicated wife and mother - she is also a Maryland State Senator. Klausmeier has served as a Senator for six years, and during this time, has proven to be a great example for young women.

Senator Klausmeier was not always drawn to politics. She began her career in the healthcare industry, working for St. Joseph Medical Center for 27 years, where she established the Child Life Program, which helps children cope with the stresses of hospitalization. She fi rst developed an interest in politics when she was President of the PTA at Gunpowder Elementary, and spearheaded a group to have another elementary school built in her community.

“As President, I had to fi ght for a new elementary school because our school was overcrowded,” explained Senator Klausmeier. “Politics were nowhere in my thoughts at that time, but I knew we needed a new school, so I led that rise.” In 1991, Seven Oaks Elementary School opened in Perry Hall as a result of her determination.

After her initial victory with the school system, Klausmeier became involved in the Women’s Commission of Baltimore County. The Commission advocates for many women’s issues including family needs and domestic violence. Members act as advisors and social activists in order to meet the needs of women in the community. As a member of the Women’s Commission, she traveled regularly to Annapolis to follow some of the women’s interest bills and met many women who infl uenced her decision to run for offi ce.

“When I started running for offi ce, some women’s groups offered classes on how to get elected. It was a great way for me to network with other women who had the same ideas,” said Senator Klausmeier.

Once Senator Klausmeier was in offi ce, she became extremely involved in community change and improvement, particularly in honoring veterans of war. “I named the new Route 43 the Korean War Veterans Memorial Highway,” she said. “I was also able to work with the Korean war veterans, the state, and the county to obtain nice monuments at the beginning and end of Route 43. It’s one of those things that make you feel good because you know you’re honoring people who really deserve it.” Senator Klausmeier also worked diligently on the Korean War veterans’ behalf to have them chartered with the government.

Despite all of the great work Senator Klausmeier has already accomplished for her community, she still strives to do more. She is responsible for Storyville in the Rosedale Library, a free, pre-learning center for infants up to fi ve years of age. She is currently working with the county to acquire an anchor store or Chuck E. Cheese in the shopping center so children can go somewhere after they visit Storyville. “We are trying to upgrade that shopping center and make it a destination place for the neighborhood,” Klausmeier explained.

Senator Klausmeier is also a part of the planning committee for a new streetscape in Overlea to enhance the National Museum of History. This streetscape will begin in the city and extend to the beltway area. To Klausmeier, the National Museum of History will be a very prominent part of Overlea and a big help in revitalizing the neighborhood. She admits that this project will take some time due to our current economic situation and the need for citizen input. Nevertheless, Senator Klausmeier is determined to make this project a reality for the Overlea neighborhood.

The Highlighter Summer 2009 7

Despite her busy schedule, Senator Klausmeier always has time for Catholic High. She continuously supports her Alma Mater through the Annual Fund and by attending fundraising events for the school such as Autumn Night and Spring Fling.

Klausmeier credits many of her accomplishments in offi ce and who she is personally to the values instilled in her at Catholic High. “Catholic High made me a stronger person. There were many things I learned that helped me become a professional person. Those values come out in my personality – that’s how I let my light shine.”

Her advice to young women is to “respect yourself, respect others, study, work hard, and be on time. Part of being an empowered woman is deciding what you want to do and then just doing it. You have to work hard to achieve your goals. I think that all women should be able to stand on their own, do what they want to do, and be an important part of the world.”

2009 National Honor Society InducteesFriends and family joined 23 new inductees on March 19, 2009 as they celebrated their induction into the Mother Generosa Chapter of the National Honor Society. The new members received membership certifi cates, cards, and pins. Mr. Kevin Hattrup gave the keynote address for the evening under this year’s theme of “Preparing for a Bright Future.” After the ceremony, the Parent Guild served delightful refreshments.

The criteria for induction into the National Honor Society are the following:The students must be sophomores, juniors, or seniors who have spent a full semester at Catholic High. The students must also carry a 3.5-weighted GPA from the previous year to the end of the current semester. Students must willingly participate in community service activities and must possess excellent leadership qualities, as well as good character. Upon completion of an application, the chapter council, consisting of fi ve faculty members, determines selection.

Foreign Language Honor Society InducteesOn April 2 during a school-wide assembly, students were inducted into the French and Spanish Honor Societies. These honor societies require the students to complete at least two years of French or Spanish, and have a grade no lower than 90. The students must also continue to study the chosen foreign language and culture into their third or fourth year.Spanish: French:Victoria Amey Rachel Keenan Gabriella DeJuliisBrianna Buschman Christine Klapka Melissa PatekAnna Casterline Paige Lauenstein Rachel PatekKayla Cullum Aerielle Matsangos Laura SchmidtKristen DiMarino Megan McCaffrey Kirstie StachowskiKatelyn Ensminger Alexandra MikulskiVictoria Fischer Brittany MorganAylin Guler Heather MurrilloCourtney Holland Alyssa PascarellVanessa Johnson Margaret PuglisiKatelyn Johnston Rachel Single

Upcoming Alumnae Events

Cafeteria Renovations BeginCatholic High’s cafeteria is fi nally getting a facelift after 70 years, thanks largely to a $175,000 grant from the Knott Foundation and a $65,000 grant from the Sheridan Foundation. The cafeteria, built in 1939, is utilized not only for student lunches, but also for dances and social gatherings such as meetings, events, or reunions. The new cafeteria will resemble a food court with portable food kiosks, new tables and chairs, a new PA system, four fl at screen TVs, a moveable divider partition to make the room as small or as large as a certain event requires, and a ceiling-mounted projector with screen for meetings.

Demolition began June 8 and it is expected to be completed by the fi rst week of August.

“The cafeteria project is the largest renovation in the 70-year history of the school. The new facility will serve as an attractive, multi-purpose gathering space for years to come,” explained Dr. Barbara D. Nazelrod ’68, President. “I look forward to many successful events for families, alumnae, and students of Catholic High in addition to daily lunches for members of our school community. We are extremely grateful to the Knott and Sheridan Foundations for enabling us to realize our dream of a new cafeteria.”

Sophomore and Junior Receive Writing Awards

Sophomore Kathyrn Hundertmark and junior Jessica Crowell were awarded the second Miranda-Leddy Writing Scholarships at The Catholic High School of Baltimore’s undergraduate awards assembly on Thursday, May 28.

Envisioned by Stephanie Leddy, who over the course of her twenty years at TCHS taught all levels of English, journalism, moderated The Highway, the school newspaper, and Canticles, the literary magazine, as a means of stimulating and drawing out the creative writing and creative non-fi ction writing of the students. Its purpose was also to encourage involvement in the production of Canticles.

The scholarships are different than most because the student who receives one at the end of her sophomore year based on her submission of writings as indicated in the application can receive a second scholarship at the end of her junior year if she has been active in Canticles, writes about her involvement and is recommended by the Canticles moderator, Mr. Kevin Hattrup.

Mrs. Leddy decided to begin the scholarship after she retired in 2007 because writing was one area where student achievement was not acknowledged through an award. It is named to honor her parents and her husband who all encouraged her goals and her writing. It is her hope that it will stimulate the talented young women of Catholic High to be involved in Canticles, to work on their writing and to submit it for the scholarship.

This year three sophomores submitted applications and writings: Kathryn Hundertmark, Brije Smith and Kristin DiMarino. Jessica Crowell, the fi rst recipient of the award last year, received the fi rst junior award and Kathryn Hundertmark received the sophomore award.
