Dear Traveler,

The AIA’s first cruise along the Rhine and

Moselle Rivers will be hosted by Barry Strauss,

a historian of ancient Greece and Rome, and

two additional guest lecturers. Join them and explore the region’s ancient Roman heritage and 20th-century military history for twelve unforgettable

days aboard the luxurious, 45-suite Royal Crown riverboat. Enjoy gorgeous scenery, dine in a historic castle, visit

vineyard estates to taste regional wines, and sample

local craft brews. Cruise from Basel to Amsterdam and visit classic highlights such as Strasbourg, Mainz, and the fairytale castles of the romantic Rhine; several well-pre-served ancient Roman cities; and important sites from

World War II, including General Patton’s famous Third Army crossing in Oppenheim and Operation Market Garden at Arnhem. On many days, you will be invited to choose the (included) excursion activity that best suits your interests. Some excur-sions explore ancient Rome’s impact on the region, such as Augusta Raurica, the largest Roman ruins in Switzer-land, with one of Central Europe’s best-preserved Roman theaters; and Germany’s Roman ruins at Trier, garrison at Bodobrica, and Xanten Archaeological Park and open-air museum. Other excursions delve into World War II history along the Rhine and Moselle, from Arnhem’s

Airborne Museum and Nijmegen’s Overloon Museum to the Oversteek Bridge, where American soldiers fought for the liberation of the Netherlands. Your travel experiences will be enhanced by presentations

from a stellar team of study leaders: Cornell professor Barry Strauss, a military historian specializing in ancient Greece and Rome; Colonel Kevin Weddle, Ret., a professor of military theory and strategy at the U.S. Army War College; and Carlos Eire, Professor of History & Religious Studies at Yale. An optional, two-night, pre-cruise extension in Basel, Switzerland; and an optional, two-night, post-cruise extension in Holland are also available. Since we are sharing this cruise with travelers from Cornell, Princeton, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and Yale, space aboard the 45-suite Royal Crown is limited. I encourage you to reserve your suite today by contacting AIA Tours at 800-748-6262 or [email protected]. Sincerely,

R. Todd Nielsen Director, AIA Tours Archaeological Institute of America

ItineraryMonday–Tuesday, May 6–7HOME / BASEL, SWITZERLAND Depart home on an overnight flight to Basel. Embark the Royal Crown on May 7 and enjoy a welcome reception and dinner. Royal Crown (R,D)

Wednesday, May 8BASELThis morning take a walking tour of Basel’s medieval Old Town. Steeped in Celtic-Roman history and situated at the cross-roads of France, Germany, and Switzerland, much of the ancient city of Basel still stands and is well preserved. An important cultural center, Basel is home to Switzerland’s oldest university, where the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche taught. In the afternoon, choose from one of two options. OPTION 1: Augusta Raurica, site of the oldest known Roman colony on the Rhine. Ongoing excavations have revealed a theater, aqueduct, assembly chamber, tavern, bakery, and tile kiln, among other structures. The onsite museum

houses important finds from the excavation and details the history of the colony. OPTION 2: The Kunstmuseum Basel, which contains the most important public art collection in Switzerland, including the largest collection of works by the Holbein family. Royal Crown (B,L,D)

Thursday, May 9STRASBOURG, FRANCELike many of the region’s border cities, Strasbourg has traded hands several times between France and Germany; today, the French capital of Alsace and seat of the European Parliament reflects both cultures—linguist- ically, architecturally, and gastronomically. Strasbourg features a historic, UNESCO World Heritage-designated city center with 16th-century half-timbered houses and a Gothic cathedral built of red sandstone. This morning explore the city by coach and on foot, then meander on local boats through the canals of Stras-bourg’s “Petite France” (the former tanners’ and fishmongers’ districts). This afternoon, choose from one of two options. OPTION 1: Ouvrage Schoenen-bourg (Fort Schoenenbourg), a Maginot Line fortification. Although heavily bombarded during the Battle of France in 1940, it suffered little significant damage and retains all of its original structural elements. OPTION 2: A wine tasting in Alsace, an important wine- producing region in France, noted for its dry Rieslings. Royal Crown (B,L,D)

Friday, May 10MAINZ, GERMANY Enjoy a morning of cruising along the beautiful Rhine River to Mainz, where native son Johannes Gutenberg developed movable type printing in 1439. This afternoon, take a guided tour of the Gutenberg Museum, where you can view a replica of Gutenberg’s workshop, observe a demonstration of his printing method, and see a copy of his 42-line Bible, printed between 1452 and 1455. Then take an opportunity to stroll along the

banks of the Rhine River in the shadow of Mainz’s charming architecture. Royal Crown (B,L,D)

Saturday, May 11RHINE GORGE This morning traverse the scenic Rhine Gorge, the popular name for the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, which earned UNESCO World Heritage designation in 2002 for its unique combination of geological, historical, cultural, and industrial reasons. This part of the Rhine also features strongly in folklore, including the opera Gotterdammerung. After lunch the Royal Crown enters the Moselle River and cruises past storybook castles and lush vineyards en route to Bernkastel and Trier. Royal Crown (B,L,D)

Sunday, May 12TRIER / BERNKASTEL Trier is possibly the oldest city in Germany and well known for its Roman and medieval buildings. Visit the well-preserved Porta Nigra city gate, the 4th-century Basilica of Constantine (Aula Palatina), and a 2nd-century A.D. Roman bridge, still in use. After lunch visit Bernkastel- Kues, an acclaimed wine- growing center on the Middle Moselle and birthplace of one of the most famous German polymaths, the medieval church-man and philosopher Nikolaus von Kues. Enjoy a private tasting of wines, primarily Reislings, grown on steep-sloped vineyards. Royal Crown (B,L,D)

Monday, May 13KOBLENZ / REMAGEN After a morning of cruising, disembark in Koblenz and continue to Namedy Castle for a personal welcome by Princess Heide von Hohenzollern, a private concert, and a private tour while the ship continues to Remagen. Namedy Castle dates back to the 14th century and, since the late 20th century, has functioned as a cultural center featuring concerts, art exhibi-tions, and the annual Art in the Park week. Continue overland to Remagen to view the Bridge Towers and hear a guest lecture on the Battle of Remagen, when

Allied troops unexpectedly captured the Ludendorff Bridge over the Rhine in March 1945 and seriously thwarted German military operations in the area. Royal Crown (B,L,D)

Tuesday, May 14COLOGNEArrive in Cologne after a morning of cruising. Germany’s fourth most populous city strad-dles the Rhine near Germany’s borders with Belgium and the Netherlands, and is home to one of Europe’s oldest and largest universities. Tour Cologne Cathedral, the city’s most famous and most beloved landmark and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Also visit the Roman-German Museum to view a large collec-tion of artifacts from the Roman settlement on which modern Cologne is built. This evening enjoy free time for independent exploration in Cologne. Royal Crown (B,L,D)

Wednesday, May 15DUISBERG / DUSSELDORFCruise to Duisberg and choose one of two options for this afternoon’s activity. OPTION 1: Xanten Archaeological Park and open-air museum, built on the site of the Roman settlement of Colonia Ulpia Traiana. OPTION 2: Dusseldorf, an inter-national business and financial center renowned for its fashion and trade fairs. Explore some of the city’s wealth of contempo-rary art museums and enjoy a tasting of Altbier (top-fermented “old beer”) at a local brewery. Royal Crown (B,L,D)

Thursday, May 16DEVENTER, NETHERLANDSToday choose from two op-tional activities. OPTION 1: Park Kalkriese, archaeological site of a pivotal victory of Germanic tribes over the Romans in A.D. 9. The site museum highlights ongoing research in the area. OPTION 2: A walking tour and museum visit in Kampen, a former Hanseatic League city with one of the best-preserved old town centers in the Neth-erlands. Afternoon tea will be taken in Middachten Castle,

a monumental Dutch manor house originally built in the 12th century. Royal Crown (B,L,D)

Friday, May 17ARNHEMToday choose from one of two full-day options. OPTION 1: From its 19th-century days as a genteel resort town, Arnhem secured a place in World War II history as the site of Operation Market Garden, the failed effort by Allied forces to secure nine bridges over the Rhine. Visit Frost Bridge, named after the British officer in command at Arnhem, and the Airborne Museum, dedicated to the Battle of Arnhem. Also explore the Overloon War Museum in Nijmegen, located on the site of the Battle of Overloon, a World War II tank and infantry battle between Allied and German forces that occurred in Septem-ber and October 1944, in the aftermath of Operation Market Garden. OPTION 2: Explore the Kröller-Müller Museum, a national art museum and sculpture park that boasts the second-largest collection of Van Gogh paintings and a fine assemblage of modern and contemporary sculptures. Those who wish may enjoy optional cycling in the surrounding Park Hoge Velwe. Drive to the tiny country village of Bronkhorst, population approximately 150, for free time to explore its pic-turesque buildings and medieval castle. ALL: This evening enjoy an optional walk at sunset across the modern De Oversteek

Bridge in Nijmegen, where the American soldiers who died here fighting for the liberation of the Netherlands are honored every night with the lighting in slow succession of street lamps spanning the bridge. Royal Crown (B,L,D)

Saturday, May 18AMSTERDAMAmsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands, although not the seat of government. An import-ant port during the 17th-century Dutch Golden Age, it is one of Europe’s top financial centers and has a long history in the diamond trade.
