2. The voyage of the Beagle has been by far the most important event in my life and has determined my whole career Charles Darwin "HMS Beagle in the Galapagos" by John Chancellor Dr Gordon Chancellor and reproduced for The HMS Beagle Project with his kind permission. 3. I have always felt that I owe to the voyage the rst real training or education of my mindDuring some part of the day I wrote my Journal, and took much pains in describing carefully and vividly all that I had seen; and this was good practice. My Journal served, also, in part as letters to my home, and portions were sent to England, whenever there was an opportunityEverything about which I thought or read was made to bear directly on what I had seen and was likely to see; and this habit of mind was continued during the ve years of the voyage. I feel sure that it was this training which has enabled me to do whatever I have done in scienceLooking backwards, I can now perceive how my love for science gradually preponderated over every other taste 4. MissionWe intend to launch a modern rebuild of HMS Beagle, the iconic ship that carried Charles Darwin around the world on his historic voyage of discovery, to inspire and motivate global audiences through unique public engagement and learning programmes and original scientic research, particularly in relation to Darwins work and the elds of evolutionary biology, biodiversity and climate change. 7.
