“The voyage of the Beagle has been by far the most important event inmy life and has determined my whole career…” Charles Darwin

“…I have always felt that I owe to the voyage the first real training oreducation of my mind…

“…During some part of the day I wrote my Journal, and took muchpains in describing carefully and vividly all that I had seen; and this wasgood practice. My Journal served, also, in part as letters to my home, and portions were sent to England, whenever there was anopportunity…”

“…Everything about which I thought or read was made to beardirectly on what I had seen and was likely to see; and this habit ofmind was continued during the five years of the voyage. I feel surethat it was this training which has enabled me to do whatever I havedone in science…”

“Looking backwards, I can now perceive how my love forscience gradually preponderated over every other taste…”

Mission

We intend to launch a modernrebuild of HMS Beagle, the iconic shipthat carried Charles Darwin aroundthe world on his historic voyage ofdiscovery, to inspire and motivateglobal audiences through uniquepublic engagement and learningprogrammes and original scientificresearch, particularly in relation toDarwin’s work and the fields ofevolutionary biology, biodiversity andclimate change.
