BurGlAryThere have unfortunately been several burglaries in Händelwohnheim. This usu-ally affects shared flats on the ground floor because it is of course easiest to break in there.

Please keep in mind:– When you leave your apartement: lock

the door.– Don‘t leave your windows open (not

even in tilt position) because burglers usually get in through opened or half-opened windows.

– Lock your bikes, preferably at a bycyle stand.

– Report each burglary at the police and the Studierendenwerk because you might receive money from the insurance (also see: Insurance).

CinemAEvery Monday evening you can watch a movie together with other residents in the Händelcafé. The movie is usually shown in its original language with subtitles. The entry is free.

The movies shown in the next few weeks should be annonced on a poster in the foyer.

emerGenCy serviCeIn case of any dorm-related emergency (e.g. blackout, burst pipe, etc.) outside the normal working hours, you can reach the Studierendenwerk via 0172 7628000.

But remember: If you call because of something unimportant, you‘ll have to pay.

If you want to stay longer than 6 semesters (which is the longest you can usually live in one of the dorms) you can apply for an extension.

You can either offer a tutorial or if you‘re shortly before your state examination you may apply for extension. Please contact your responsible offical at the Studieren-denwerk for further information.

foyerThe foyer is the entrance hall where you can find the letterboxes and the office of the janitor. Important information on activi-ties and events in Händelwohnheim will be displayed here.

You will also receive information on the program of the “International Club” and the “Mensa” here.

HänDelCAféHändelcafé opens every Thursday at 10 pm. You can buy delicious cocktails, beer and sodas there – of course for student-friendly prices. You can also listen to music or play tabletop soccer.

It gives you the opportunity to meet people from Germany and all over the world.

But because of the neighbours the café unfortunately needs to be closed at 1 am again.

How To sAve enerGyWe in Händel, just like in the other dorms of the Studierendenwerk, try to use ener-gy responsibly. Please keep the following in mind:

While showering or doing the dishes, leave warm water running as short as possible switch off unneeded lights in the commu-nity rooms (next to each door is a light switch. You don‘t have to leave the light on just because you‘re afraid you won‘t find your way in the darkness) usage of exten-sion leads with off-switch also contribute to saving energy. That way you can switch off all electric devices and nothing remains in stand-by mode.

inTerneTIt is usually the first question how to access the internet. By now there is a separate internet connection in each room. If you want to connect your com-puter to the internet you need to plug in a LAN cable or a WIFI modem if you pre-fer (please note: there is no community Wifi here!). There should be a manual on how to connect/register in your room. The registration page should open auto-matically when you open your browser. Unfortunately the person who is listed as „Internet/Netzwerk Tutor“ in the list in your flat, is not responsible for the any problems you might have, so in case you have any problems you need to call the hotline.

inTernATionAl TuTorThe International Tutor is employed by the Studierendenwerk. His main focus is in-ternational students. He will always try to make time for you. He‘s familiar with in-tercultural problems and sensitive to pro-blems which affect international students.

He organizes free time activites and ou-tings. You can find further information on the website of the Studierendenwerk:www.swfr.de /en /wohnen / wohnheimtutoren

45insurAnCe

All residents are through their social insu-rance contribution (“Sozialbeitrag”) insured against burglary in your dorm. But the in-surance only pays if the door/window was locked or the bike was locked in one of the designated areas (e.g. bicycle storage room). You can find further information on the provided insurance on the website of the Studierendenwerk:www.swfr.de/en/bafoeg-finanzen/versicherungen/

JAniTorThe janitor (technical staff member) is Mr. Babes. His office hours are: Monday 8.00 am – 9.00 am and Thursday 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm

You can go to him for several reasons: you can buy a washing card (also see: Washing card), notify him when you want to move out (at least 10 days before you want to move out) or if you want to report any damage. This “Schadensmel-dung” (report of damage) means that something is broken in your room/appar-tement and if you inform the janitor he will fix it.

If the janitor doesn‘t have any office hours and the damage is serious, you can write a “Schadensmeldung” (you can find the forms next to the janitor‘s office) and put it into the letterbox reading “Schadensmel-dungen”. The janitor will then be informed of your problem on the next working day and will take care of it.

The janitor also distributes new light bulbs (for community rooms, not for your room) and batteries for the fire detectors if the old ones don‘t work anymore.

loCk AnD key serviCe (NOT for move-in!)If you‘ve lost your key, you can call 0172 7628000.

But the service is NOT for free: Mo.– Th.4 pm – 10 pm: € 31,– 10 pm – 12 am: € 45,–

Fr. 1 pm – 10 pm: € 31,– 10 pm – 12 am: € 45,–

Sa., So. and Holidays8 am – 12 pm: € 45,–

After midnight there is NO service.

move-inIf something isn‘t the way it‘s supposed to be in your room after you‘ve moved in (e.g. not properly painted walls or broken electric installation) inform the janitor as soon as possible. If you don‘t inform him within 2 weeks after you‘ve moved in, the Studierendenwerk assumes that your room was fine when you got it.

move-ouTYou need to contact Ms. Zipfel-Wilsch at the Studierendenwerk ahead of time if you want or have to move out. Afterwards you have to make an appointment with the ja-nitor (technical staff member) Mr. Babes when exactly you want to move out.

You will need to do that in his office hours. Important notice: You need to notify Mr. Babes at least 10 working days ahead of time. The room needs to be cleaned and painted, otherwise you will not get back the whole safety deposit.

67semesTer TiCkeT

As a student of the university and other Hochschulen in Freiburg you can buy the semester ticket. The ticket is valid for the entire semester, plus the break and costs 89,– €. The ticket is vaild for the whole transport system of Freiburg (bus, train and street car) and the “Landkreise” Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald and Emmendingen.

Recently the Deutsche Bahn has decided not to accept your „Immatrikulationsbe-scheinigung“ anymore, so you really need to have your uni card with you. You can buy the ticket at the “VAG Pluspunkt” at the Bertoldsbrunnen, in “Südbadenbus”, “KundenCenter” in Freiburg and Neustadt, as well as in the “DB Reisezentrum”.

And: the night bus, which takes you home Friday and Saturday night, is not included in the semester ticket and costs 2,50 €.

ssvSSV is short for “Studentische Selbst- Verwaltung” which consists of 6 people. You can find their contact details on the orange notice sheet in your shared flat (the colour and the information on it are upda-ted every 1 – 2 semester by the SSV).

The SSV is the mediator between you and the Studierendenwerk. They help with problems and organize the summer fest, which takes place on the first weekend in July.

TuToriAlThere are a couple of tutorials in Händel. The specific tutorials can be looked up on the orange notice sheet in your WG. If you yourself want to offer one, contact the SSV. Twice a year the tutorials are newly assigned and maybe your tutorial can be put into effect. As a little thank-you, you‘re allowed to live in Händel half a year longer for one year of tutorial work.

But you shouldn‘t put up a tutorial just to stay longer. This has been done too often and the SSV makes sure that everybody does something in his or her tutorial.

venTilATion AnD HeATinGIn all dorms of the Studierendenwerk we try to be responsible users of energy. In Händel we have the following rules and you should try to keep them in mind so that the usage of energy is kept to a minimum: when you ventilate, please open the window comple-tely. Please also open your door because that way ventilation occurs. A maximum air exchange can take place in a short time. Please don‘t leave the window in a tilt position for a longer time because no air exchange is possible and energy is only wasted.

The theromostatic valves should be placed between level two and three which equals to a room temperature of 20 to 22 degrees. Please remember: one degree less room temperature saves 6 % of heating energy.

wAsHinG mACHine The washing machines in House 20 can be found in the basement. In House 18 (the house parallel to Händelstraße) the room with the washing machines is situated next to the foyer, across from the janitor‘s of-fice. If you want to use the washing ma-chines, make sure you have credit on your uni card.

On the wall you can find a card reader. If the matching light on the washing machine is green, the machine is free. You can put in your laundry and washing powder, se-lect a program and temeperature and start the machine.

89wAsTe DisposAl

This is a common stereotype for Germans and Germany, just like Oktoberfest and Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte. Iit is not only a stereotype but waste really is sorted. That makes recycling easier and minimizes the ecological damage. Waste is usually sor-ted like this:

“Yellow Bag”: all plastic packages, like: yoghurt cups, aluminium, all metallic sub-stances and “Tetrapacks” (e.g. milk car-tons)

Paper: obviously everything with paper belongs into this waste, like: the carton of your pizza box

Residual waste: everything that doesn‘t belong in one of the other wastes should be disposed of in residual waste, e.g. food left-overs

Important: batteries need to be disposed of into special waste (They can be dispo-sed in special boxes at Aldi or Lidl.) Paint left-overs and electronic scrap should be disposed of into special waste and need to be disposed somewhere else (e.g. “Frei-burger Recyclinghof”)
