Box Top Winners

Congratulations to Mrs. Hartford’s 4th grade classroom for collecting the most box tops for the month of April with a grand total of 134 box tops. They earned a free recess period.

For the month of April students turned in a total of 457 box tops. Keep up the good work!

As our Disney Adventure comes to a close this year, we hope it was exciting and that we provided a safe, happy learning environment for each student.

Boles Elementary appreciates each student’s hard work and the families support and involvement. Without these things we certainly would not be successful.

Proper Shoes for P.E. Class

Boles Elementary would like to remind students to wear tennis shoes for P.E.. This is a safety issue. Tennis shoes are built to provide support to your foot and ankle during physical activity, and as a result they help reduce the risk of fractures and sprains while active. We care about the safety of all our students which is why we require tennis shoes for P.E. class. Students not wearing tennis shoes will not be allowed to participate in activities in which they are required to run. Students who do not participate regularly

due to not having proper foot attire may see this reflected in their grades, as P.E. grades are based in part on participation. We appreciate your support in insuring a safe P.E. program for students.

With warmer weather approaching, students will be unpacking their summer attire from last year. It’s amazing how much they can grow in a year. Please make sure shorts and tops meet the dress code which is on page 18.

Take time this week to recognize the efforts of the teachers at Boles Elementary. We really do appreciate our wonderful staff!

Boles Elementary will host the Scholastic Book Fair May 2-6.

Students will be able to visit and purchase items from the Book Fair during their regular scheduled library times during the week.

The Book Fair will also be open at other times for students who may miss during this time.

BOOK FAIR FAMILY EVENT:Please come join us for “Breakfast and a Book” May 4th 7:30 AM – 8:15 AM in the Boles library. We’ll be serving coffee, juice, and donuts. Come and help your child shop our book fair.

The Book Fair will close at noon on Friday, May 6.

The St. Jude Math-a-thon was delayed until May 13th due to receiving our booklets late.

Let’s work really hard to meet our goal of exceeding last year’s total of $1,479.43!

All Elementary students will enjoy the annual end of the year Field Day. This year the activity will be held on May 27th.

Each student will receive a free t-shirt from the Elementary. Parents can purchase t-shirts. Order forms were sent home earlier last month. Parents are welcome to join the fun!

Information regarding lunches for field day will be sent home with students later this month.

Kindergarten GraduationKindergarten Graduation exercises will be held in the Robert L. Boyd Athletic Complex on May 31st, at 9:00 a.m. Details will be sent home with each Kindergarten student.

Awards Ceremony

End of the Year Awards Ceremony will be presented in the Covey Activity Room on Wednesday, June 1st.

Pre-K – 1st Grade 8:30 a.m.

2nd – 4th Grade 9:30 a.m.

Report Cards will go home June 2nd along with awardsand information for nextschool year.Be sure to look over the items.

June 19 Father’s Day

Test AnxietyTest anxiety is a very common experience. It can cause physical problems such as upset stomach or headaches as well as fear, anger and even depression. This anxiety can prevent a student from being able to think, comprehend and learn. Research has shown that providing students with tools and strategies to deal with this overwhelming feeling can improve their ability to prepare and perform on tests. This month, our third and fourth grade students will be STAAR testing.

Get an adequate night sleep, at least 8-10 hours. This will provide the energy needed to focus on the test.

Eat a nutritious breakfast such as eggs, cereal or whole wheat toast. All of these foods can energize the brain to think better and longer than quick energy foods such as cookies and sodas.

If negative or “what if” thoughts enter the mind, take a deep breath. Breathe in and out for several seconds to calm down. Picture something in your mind that feels good like playing a game with friends, a hug from your mom or your cute little dog. Think of positive answers to “what if” questions, such as, “What if I know more than I think I do?”

Make sure you listen very closely to the directions, and you read carefully the instructions as well as each item on the test.

Follow the strategies provided by your teacher to do your best on the test.

Take time to enjoy the completion of the test with your child that evening.

When the test results are in, discuss them with your child. A lot can be learned from mistakes. Make positive suggestions.

Confidence in test-taking skills can really cause your child to have test anxiety and ultimately show what he or she has learned.

Parent’s Guide to Sight Words

Sight words are one of the essential skills that you can help with at home. They are

words that are most frequently used in print and typically cannot be sounded out. In

order to be a fluent reader, students should be able to read sight words quickly and

automatically. Your child’s sight words are on the Boles Elementary web site.

Sight words can be practiced nightly for short periods of time. Here are some ways you

can work with your child to learn these words and excel at reading!

Flash Cards: Write one sight word on each index card. Hold up one card at a

time and quiz your child to see if he/she can identify the word. If your child is

correct, the card goes in his/her pile. If not, it goes in the parent’s pile. The

person with the biggest “pile” at the end wins.

Can you find: Lay the cards on the table, face up. Ask your child to find a given

word. If they find it, they keep it. Keep going until all the cards are picked up.

Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check: Child practices each step and then practices

again on words that are giving her/him trouble.

Messy Writing: Put shaving cream, finger paint, or pudding on a washed, flat

surface. Your child will practice writing words with index finger of dominant

writing hand as you call them out. Using a cookie sheet can help keep the mess

contained

DRESS AND GROOMING VIOLATIONSIf the principal determines that a student grooming violates the dress code, the student shall be given an opportunity to correct the problem at school. If not corrected, the student shall be designated to in-school suspension for the remainder of the day or until a parent or designee brings an acceptable change of clothes to the school. A student will be assigned directly to in-school suspension after three dress code violations.
