READING TIPS
There are different techniques to be used on how to teach your child how to read; different methods should be tried – since kids respond differently to different methods. I myself struggled for a while until I understood which techniques work best with my daughter.
Suggested Reading Methods and Tips:
LETTER RECOGNITION & PHONICS ~ for the very beginning, your child will need to be accustomed to the letters; you can buy the wooden cubes with letters and practice the “sounds”/phonics of each letter; you can also make words with the available letters (especially if you have a few sets of letters); one recommended web-site is “ www.starfall.com”’ - which has different reading levels - from phonics to actual reading; some stories there are also accompanied by sounds to help with reading; for letters recognition you an also use flash cards, etc.
“THE TRADITIONAL METHOD” – here the mother (primarily) buys books or borrows some books from the library and starts reading to her kids on a daily basis; you important tip is to make this a daily practice – if you can – in shallah schedule a particular time with your kid(s) – so that they develop a daily routine; TIP – there are different reading levels for the kids; just watch the levels designed for the beginning readers (which have a few words and more pictures) – and, as your kids advance with reading you can move onto text that is more sophisticated, where there is more writing and less pictures. (this method worked very well with my daughter). Here you can also include Islamic books (with English spelling)
THE READING CIRCLE – similar to the “Traditional Method” – the person organizes a weekly activity to read to a Group of Children; the story is followed with a Question and Answer Session of what the children understood about the story, what was their favourite point in the story and what they would like to tell a friend about this story. Other interesting questions based on the story could be asked. If the children has primary reading skills, they can be asked to take turns in reading stories – within the same session or in different sessions.
READING SIGNS/ BILLBOARDS – one good tip from the beginning is to ask your child when you go to a store (etc.) – what the name of the store is (ex. – in Canada – the store “Zellers” has a huge red sign – which is very visible and easily recognizable by the kids once they have seen it once or a couple of times)

FLASH CARDS ~ these cards can be simply containing one letter each or they can display words and pictures; they are very useful in practicing spelling of common words; the advantage of flash cards is that it is easy to review the words learned. If you teach multiple kids, they can also play spelling games. Each correct spelled word would get a score; whoever learns and spells most words, wins. Keep in mind though that not all kids respond well to competition.\
THE READING CASTLE ~ in this activity a group of kids are provided with letter cubes and are asked to build a castle; their task would be to create as many words as they can (or the words could be provided in a list by the teacher/parent; the kids can be grouped in teams, each team accumulating points based on how many words they make and the length or the words (ex. Two letter words- 1 point; three letter words – 2 points, four letter words – 3 points, etc.)
SPELLING COMPETITION ~ initially, the kids are provided with the spelling words to learn; then they can be assessed orally by a Judge (Teacher, Parent, Older Child) individually or in teams on their spelling words. Prizes should to be given to all kids, in accordance with their spelling abilities (those who know more get more prizes, and viceversa).
OTHER METHODS – other creative methods can be invented and practiced by the teacher/parent. However, here’s one main tip:
KIDS NEED REVIEW ! ~ since what they learned in their short-term memory usually needs much review to go into the long term memory. They could know spelling of a word today and forget it by tomorrow, which can be extremely frustrating for parents. However, with constant reviews of the material learned the kids will accumulate the basic necessary skills, in shallah.

WHAT IS MULTIPLICATION & DIVISION?
MULTIPLICATION IS REPEATED ADDITIONEXAMPLE:3 X 4 =12 (3+3+3+3= 12 OR 4+4+4=12)3 repeated four times in addition equals 12, or4 repeated 3 times in addition equals 12
WHAT IS DIVISION?
DIVISION IS SPLITTING THINGS IN EQUAL PARTS; IT IS THE OPPOSITE OF MULTILPICATION
EXAMPLE:12/3=4 (12 carpets can be grouped in 3 groups of 4 carpets each)12/4=3 (12 carpets can be grouped in 4 groups of 3 carpets each)
MULTIPLICATION WITH MANIPULATIVES
EXAMPLE: 3X4= 12

MULTIPLICATION TIPS:
Any number multiplied by 1 is itself
Any number multiplied by 2 is the number added by itself (such as 3x2=6; or 3+3=6)
Multiplying by 5s (fives) – count by fives - use your fingers to find the solutions (5x4 =; 5,10,15,20)
Multiplying by 10s(tens) – count by 10s to find out the answer (10x3=; 10,20,30) or add a zero to the number given (10x3=30)
Memorizing basic multiplication is easy; some multiplication questions rhyme:
6*4=24 (six x four equals twenty four)
Learn multiplication by one number ever day for 10 days (multiplication by 1s, 2s, 3s) – etc.
Use Index Cards to Review Basic Multiplication Questions (#1-10)
Use manipulatives (illustrations, materials) to help you solve basic multiplication questions
Review learned multiplication daily until fully memorized.
