Indians Defense Struggles EarlyTribe Falls To Deance

    By Mitchell Peebles

    THE VILLAGE REPORTER

    WAUSEON 1/11/14A hot shooting

start for the Deance Bulldogs wouldprove to be too much for the WauseonIndians to overcome, as they would fallto the Deance Bulldogs 47-39 in nonconference action.

Deance would set the tone for theiroffense early on. The Bulldogs wouldscore 15 points in the rst quarter, allof which were off of three pointers as theIndian defense struggled to nd a wayto slow down the long range shootingof Deance. The Tribe would do theirpart on the offensive end of the court inthe rst quarter, as four different play-ers would score for Wauseon. As therst quarter came to and end, Deancewould hold a slim 15-14 lead.

The Bulldogs three point shootingremained hot in the beginning of the

second quarter, as they would nail an-other pair of three point shots early onin the quarter. However, unlike in therst quarter, the Tribe offense would beunable to keep pace in the second, asthe Bulldogs tough defense held the In-dians to only four point in the secondquarter. The halftime scoreboard read27-18 in favor of Deance.

Wauseon was able to bounce backoffensively in the third period, keepingpace with the Bulldogs, but the Indians

were not able to cut in to the Deance

lead at all, as both teams would score

ten points in the third, making in 37-28

with one quarter of action remaining.Things would get interesting in the -

nal quarter. After being held to only eight

points in the rst three quarters, Noah

Castle was able to score eight in the -

nal quarter alone to help mount a come-

back attempt for the Tribe. Wauseons

defense would be able to pressure De-

ance in to offensive mistakes. With

just over three minutes remaining in

the contest, the Indians were able to

get within only two possessions of the

Bulldogs, with Wauseon only trailing by

ve points. Just as the Indians start-

ed to get momentum, Deance decided

to slow the game down, and run some

clock off, stiing any chance Wauseon

had at a comeback, and the Bulldogs

would go on to win 47-39.

Castle scored 16 points on the night,

setting the pace for the Tribe. Jacob

Newlove helped the Indian cause with

nine, Zac Robinson scored eight, and

Corry Byers nished the evening with

    six.

With the loss, Wauseon falls to 9-3

on the season, but remaining undefeat-

ed in the NWOAL at 3-0.

Tribe Outlasts Liberty Center InTough NWOAL Battle

    By: Mitchell Peebles

    THE VILLAGE REPORTER

    WAUSEON 1/10/2014On an im-

portant night in the NWOAL, Wauseon

was able to fend off a late rally by the

Tigers of Liberty Center. With their ri-

val Archbold Bluestreaks losing theirrst league game of the season to the

Swanton Bulldogs the same night, the

Indians had a chance to take control of

    the NWOAL boys basketball standings,

if they could get past the Tigers. After

being behind by as many as 14 points in

the third quarter, Liberty Center would

come charging back, even taking a lead

in the nal minutes of the game. The

Tribe was able to regain their compo-

sure, lead by a 30 point performance

by senior Corry Byers, and grab a 53-

49 win, remaining undefeated in league

    play.

Byers high scoring night started off

in the opening quarter, hitting a three to

spark the Indians early on. Liberty Cen-

ters size gave the Tribe some trouble, as

the Indians would only be leading 11-8as the rst quarter was coming to and

end, that is until Kris Boysel was able

to nab an offensive rebound with less

than two seconds left on the clock, and

put the ball in to the basket just as the

buzzer sounder, giving Wauseon a 13-8

lead at the end of the rst quarter.

In the second quarter, it would again

be Byers leading the way, scoring nine

of the Indians 11 points in the period.

Wauseons lead would remain at ve

going in to halftime, with the Indians

    leading 24-19.

Wauseon started off the third quar-

ter hot, jumping out to as large as a 14

point lead midway through the third

quarter. Liberty Center would nd their

groove again though late in the quarter,

closing back in on the Indians. After

three quarters of action, the Tribe was

    clinging to a 37-31 lead.

The Tigers were not going to let the

Indians off easy. After it seemed as if

Wauseon was going to come away with

an easy victory, Liberty Center found a

spark from their 67 center Chestnut.

The Tribe defense had trouble defend-

ing his post presence, and were caught

off-guard as the big man launched and

drained a three pointer, cutting in to

the Indian lead. The Tigers were even

able to take a 47-46 lead with 3:30 left

in the contest. The Indians were given

a technical foul, and it seemed as if the

game was slipping away from them, but

then Byers started taking over again for

the Tribe, scoring 12 points in the nal

quarter, which also opened up the post

game for Noah Castle, who was able to

draw a 5th foul against Liberty Centers

Chestnut in the nal minutes, causing

the 67 Tiger to have to sit on the bench

for the remainder of the game. Byers and

Castle were the only Indians to score in

the nal quarter of action, but that is all

the Tribe would need, capturing the win

    by a score of 53-49.

Byers lead all scorers on the night

with 30 points, Castle was next with 11,

Jacob Newlove scored 7, and Kris Boy-

sel rounded out the scoring for the Tribe

    with 5 points.

With the win, the Indians move to

9-2 on the season, and lead the NWOAL

with 3 league wins and 0 league losses.

    THE VILLAGE REPORTER

WEST UNITY ... The Montpelier Loco-motives drew the Fairview Apaches in the

opening seminal round of the 2013 Hill-

top Holiday Classic in The Bunker on De-cember 27. While neither team has seen

much success in the won-lost departmentthis season, the Locos were staring down a

distinctive disadvantage from the openingwhistle. Montpelier has four players that

go six feet and above. On the other hand,

the Apaches have two players that arenot at least six feet tall, including a pair

of paint pounders in Bradley Ebaugh and

Daniel Smith that are both 6' 5".With Ebaugh and Smith denying the

interior, and the Fairview guards creating

turnovers on the perimeter, the Locos fell

behind early. On the defensive end, Mont-pelier had no answer for Smith, who simply

shot the ball over anybody that the Locosput in his path. The end result was Smith

banging down a game-high 21 to lead the

Apaches to a 65-37 win over Montpelier.

Shoup combining for ten points in the rstperiod. The Apaches answered with Smith

North Central Tops Edon In OvertimeBy: Mitchell Peebles

    THE VILLAGE REPORTER

    NORTH CENTRAL 1/10/2014It

took an extra period, but the Lady Ea-

gles of North Central were able to take

down the Edon Lady Bombers 41-37.

The rst quarter was a low scoring

one for both squads, as a total of only

12 combined points were scored. NorthCentral held a slim 7-5 lead as the rst

    quarter came to a close.

The Eagles would extend this lead

in the second quarter, but the Bombers

would make sure that they did not fall

downing the Panthers by a score of 52-

    43.

    quarter of action. Pettisvilles shooting

was superb in the contest, making 18 of

blew up to erase the decit and go on to

a 50-41 win to secure third place at the

    annual tournament.

The Lady Pirates kicked off the game

by going on a 13-8 run, but the Lady

Fayette Girls Outlast North CentralBy: Mitchell Peebles

    THE VILLAGE REPORTER

    FAYETTE 1/3/2014An offensive

explosion in the third quarter allowed

Fayette to pull away late against North

    Central. Although North Central had

three players put up double digit scor-

ing totals, Fayette would grab the win

    54-41.

Fayette took advantage of free throw

opportunities in the rst quarter, scor-

ing more points from the charity stripe

than North Central would in the entirerst quarter combined. Fayette capital-

ized on ve of their six shots from the

free throw line. North Central was only

able score four points combined in the

quarter, and would fall behind Fayette

10-4 after on quarter of action.

Second chance points played a key

role for Fayette, as they would grab 20

offensive rebounds, compared to only 7

    offensive rebounds for North Central.

This allowed Fayette to increase their

lead in the second period by one, leading

21-14 as the halftime buzzer sounded.

The turnover battle also helped to tip

the scales in favor the Purple and Gold,

as they forced North Central to turn the

ball over 20 times in the contest, while

only giving up 6 turnovers of their own.

Fayettes offense found its high gear in

the third quarter. Taylor Grifths would

lead the way, hitting a trio of three point-

ers in the quarter, leading the way for

her team to score 22 points in the quar-

ter. This would lead to Fayette taking a

43-29 lead after three periods of action.

    North Central would outscore Fay-

ette in the nal quarter 12-11 in the -

nal period, but it would not be enough

to mount a comeback and overtake Fay-

ette. The Purple and Gold went on to

    seal the victory 54-41.

    Hannah Sickmeyer lead North Cen-

tral in scoring with 14, followed by Sa-

    brina Pickford and Cady Vandevorde

nard was next with three points, and

Stryker Comes Out On Top InBattle Of The Panthers

    By: Mitchell Peebles

    THE VILLAGE REPORTER

    BRYAN 12/28/2013In a matchup

that pitted Panthers vs. Panthers, it was

the Lady Panthers of Stryker who came

out victorious in the nals of the Girls

    Basketball Holiday Tournament hosted

in Bryan. Strykers defense shut down

Paulding early on, and would ride that

defensive momentum on to a 45-22 win.

It didnt take long for Stryker to take

control of the contest. The Blue and

White offense started off hot, nailing a

triplet of three point shots in the rst

quarter. Combine that with their de-

fense which held Paulding to only two

points in the rst quarter, and it makes

for a 13-2 rst quarter lead for Stryker.

Strykers lead would shrink in the

    second quarter, getting outscored by

Paulding 10-8, but with the lead that

the Stryker had built, this did little to

    shake Strykers condence though. The

Blue and White held the lead 21-12 at

    halftime.

In the third quarter, Stryker was able

to get right back on track in the quarter,

increasing their lead by six points, lead-

    ing 33-18 after three periods.

    Paulding would be unable draw

    within striking distance, as Stryker

would hold them to only four points in

the nal quarter of action, while scor-

ing 12 points of their own. This sealed

the Stryker win by a score of 45-22, as

Stryker would win the Holiday Tourna-

ment in Bryan.Connor Sullivan set the scoring

pace on the night, scoring 20 points for

Stryker. Conner Varner was gather up

    FAYETTE 12/28/2013---The varsi-

ty Fayette Lady Eagles had little trou-

ble with the Lady Bulldogs of Morenci,

    handily defeating them 67-15.

From the get go, there was little

doubt that the Eagles would go up 15-4

in the rst quarter, and would lead 30-8

    by halftime. Fayette completely domi-

nated every aspect of the game. TheEagles out rebounded Morenci 33-18,

and forced the Bulldogs to turn the ball

over a whooping total of 27 times. The

Eagle defense only allowed the Bulldogs

to convert three eld goals through all

    four quarter of the contest.

The Fayette offense was also on top

of its game, scoring at least 15 points in

every quarter, and sharing the ball well,

    racking up 21 assists.

The second half was no different than

the rst, with the Eagles leading 48-

action of the Bryan Girls Basketball

    Holiday Tournament, the Lady Panthers

of Stryker defeated the host Bryan Lady

    Golden Bears 43-37.

The Panthers set the tone early on

in the contest, dominating both the de-

fensive and offensive glass, as Stryker

    would outrebound Bryan 41-24. This

    rebounding advantage allowed Stryker

to grab an early 12-9 rst quarter lead.

Another key for the Panthers was

    their free throw shooting, converting

nearly 70 percent of their free throw at-

tempts in the contest. As the teams went

in to the locker room for the halftime in-

termission, it would be Stryker who held

the lead by a score of 20-17.

The Panther lead would expand in

the third quarter, with the Stryker of-

    fense out powering their opponents

14-7 in the period.Although the Golden Bears would

The Pilots took control to start the

game, scoring 19 points and holding the

Cadets to only seven in the rst quarter.

The rolls would be reversed in the

second period, as the Cadet offense

would nd its groove. After only scoring

seven points in the rst quarter, Hilltop

would put 16 points on the board in the

second. The Cadet defense would also

step up, holding the Pilots to only eight

in the quarter, and pulling within four

points at halftime, trailing by a slim 27-

point after three periods of play, tallying

up 12 points to Hilltops ten, putting the
