This month we will be collecting food for the annual food drive as well as gently used coats for those less fortunate. Parent teacher conferences will continue on November 6 and 20. New Hartford continues to provide a guaranteed and viable curriculum for all students. I encourage parents to remain active in your child’s education and keep an open line of communication between school and home. Please keep in mind that failure is the first step in learning and that often mistakes lend themselves to life’s lessons. Safety remains the utmost priority for our students and school and we are fortunate to have a full-time school safety officer at Hughes. This past month, we practiced an evacuation drill and will continue to practice our safety drills throughout the school year. I encourage parents to provide the school with alternate dismissal information should it become necessary to transport your child home. Please keep in mind there will be an Early Release Day on November 24 at 2:45 p.m. I encourage you to utilize the emergency procedure you may have established with alternate dismissal locations so that your child can practice. I wish all of our families at E.R. Hughes a very Happy Thanksgiving. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at (315) 738-9350. Educationally yours, Mrs. Kathleen A. Nurse’s Notes

November is American Diabetes Month.

This is a good time to communicate the seriousness of Diabetes and

the importance of Diabetes prevention and control. For years the American Diabetes Association has used this month as an opportunity

to raise awareness of the disease and its serious complications.

• Nearly 24 million children and adults in the United States have Diabetes.

• Another 57 million Americans have pre-diabetes and are at risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes.

• One out of every 3 children 9 (and 1 in 2 minority children) born in the United States today will face a future with diabetes if trends continue.

A free copy of “Top Five Ways To Stop Diabetes and Get Healthy Right Now!” or “What Can I Eat?” booklets are available by calling 1-800-DIABETES.

Diabetes is a disease in which the body either fails to produce any Insulin (Type I, also called Insulin-Dependent or Juvenile-Onset, or the Insulin that it does produce is unable to adequately trigger the conversion of food in to energy

(Type 2, also called Non-Insulin dependent or Adult-Onset).

Type I Diabetes Symptoms (which may take only a short time to develop) are:

1. Increased urine production

2. Excessive thirst

3. Fatigue

4. Weight loss

5. Increased appetite

6. Feeling sick

7. Blurred Vision

8. Infections such as thrush or irritation of the genitals

Screening, (as per New York State wide School Health Services Center)Please let your children know they will be called to the Health office every year for Health Screenings. Distance and near

vision, hearing screening and height and weight are performed. 5th and 6th graders are called for State mandated scoliosis screening. New entrants to the school also receive color perception testing.

Preventing IllnessWinter is just around the corner. Please be sure your children are dressed appropriately (warm clothing, hats, gloves or mittens, boots, etc.) We continue to go outside during recess when weather permits. Certainly your children will enjoy that

time outside in the fresh air with their friends if they are dressed appropriately!

• If your child has any asthmatic or bronchial problems, the cold air could irritate their conditions. Please give them a scarf or ski mask to pull over their mouths and noses when outside.

• Please keep your child a home when they are ill.

• Be sure our child get enough exercise and fresh air.

• Be sure they eat nutritious foods, especially a good breakfast.

• Be sure your child gets enough rest.

• Teach and remind your child how to cover coughs and sneezes.

• Reinforce good hygiene. Washing hands before meals, after the bathroom, after school, and at bedtime is so important.

Allergy AlertJust a reminder, some students have allergies to foods such as peanuts or other nuts. When bringing food in for your child/children for lunch please do not bring any for classmates as they may have an allergy you may not be aware of.

Attention Parents:A reminder for all parents that students do go outside for recess daily during the school year. Students should come to

school each day dressed for the weather with coats, boots, hats, gloves etc.

Also, please mark each item of clothing, book bag and lunch bag with your child’s name and their teacher’s name. Please mark all items such as birthday treats, sneakers, gym clothes, book bags, lunch boxes and any other item brought in for your child/children with their name and their teachers name. Thank your for your help in this matter.
