The Human Genome Project

And It’s Impact on the 21st

century

Made by RA-A

• In 2003 scientists had complete the Human Genome Project

• The goals of the project were to identify all the approximate 30,000 genes in human DNA

• Scientists obtained the DNA sequence of the 3 billion base pairs making up the human genome

Diverse Applicationsof

DNA Data and Technologies

Energy and Environmental Applications using microbial genomics

Bioanthropology

·  Study migration of different populations groups throughout time

·  Study mutation on the Y chromosome to trace lineage and migration of males

·  Trace breakpoints in the evolution of mutation with ages of populations and historical events

Risk Assessment

· Assess health damage and risks caused by radiation exposure

· Assess health damage and risks caused by exposure to mutagenic chemicals and cancer-causing toxins

· Reduce the possibility of heritable mutations

Agriculture, Livestock Breeding, and Bioprocessing

·  Make crops and animals more resistant to diseases and healthier, and more productive.

·  Make disease, insect, and drought, resistant crops

·  Develop new environmental cleanup uses for plants

· Prove the innocence of people who are wrongly accused of crimes

· Establish parenthood and other family relationships

· Identify endangered and protected species as an aid to wildlife officials

· Match organ donors with recipients in transplant programs

Beyond The Human Genome Project

The Proteome Project
