Mrs Herbert ’sAfternoon Tea

AT MONK’S LOUNGE

The quintessential English custom of enjoying afternoon tea is thought to have found its roots in the 19th century by Lady Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford. Lunch in those days was rather early and dinner was not served until late in the evening. Every afternoon, the Duchess found that she was slightly famished and started asking to enjoy a pot of tea with some light refreshments to stem the hunger. She began inviting her acquaintances to join her and very soon, it became fashionable to have a pot of tea in the middle of the afternoon. We invite you to experience our Mrs Herbert’s Afternoon Tea, named after Mrs Mary Herbert, wife of Henry Arthur Herbert. She was the owner of Muckross House in the mid 19th century and the Muckross Estate. She had the honour of hosting Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and their family in 1861 during the royal visit to Killarney.
