The Adviser, Friday, July 22 to 29, 2011
All great businesses, on which modern civilisation depends, originate as a new idea in some individual’s mind. I recall seeing the man who founded Tesco, Jack Cohen, dancing merrily at some big party
to which my wife and I had been invited, and being told by our host that the business had been based on one idea – ‘Pile ‘em high and sell ‘em cheap’. It was that concept of self-service at reduced prices, in which losses due to pilfering would be more than offset by increased sales and lower staff costs, that led to the modern supermarket.
I wondered, then, what my reaction to the idea would have been if my opinion had been asked. Would I have regarded it as a winner or rejected it? Years later, I was in exactly that position when asked by a close friend about another idea which might, or might not, make a fortune.
I was pheasant-shooting at Rothwell, in Lincolnshire, with the owner of the estate, Joseph Nickerson (later Sir) who, in addition to being an outstanding agriculturalist, was probably the fi nest game-shot of all time. Joe, who had left school at 14, had inherited a small business which sold and delivered coal in the winter and seed-corn in the spring, a common combination then because it used the same vehicles. He became fascinated by seed-corn and the possibilities of improving yields of wheat and barley by experimentation and the importation of varieties from other countries with such success that he made a great fortune. As a former botanical geneticist, I was astonished to fi nd that he had set up a research centre at Rothwell which I visited and found it staffed by top-fl ight scientists to plan and carry out trials of new seed varieties.
As Joe and I were walking together between pheasant drives, he remarked ‘I’m thinking of breeding a mini-duck’. ‘Why?’ I responded. ‘Well,’ he replied ‘people have made a fortune out of the poussin. So why not a mini-duck?’
Having known Joe for several years and being a frequent guest, I knew
that anything he said had to be taken seriously but I expressed doubt that there would enough meat on a mini-duck.
Joe passed the idea to his geneticists who quickly agreed with me but, knowing that he would be expecting a full report, they made a study of the duck market. They found that because ducks varied so much in weight when they became marketable they were sold at different prices, often having to be weighed in the shops for each customer. They realised that what the big food stores, like Marks and Spencer, and the supermarkets needed was a steady supply of ducks which were all the same weight, within an ounce or two, so that they could all be sold at the same listed price.
After reporting to Joe, they set in train the research to produce such a bird, carefully regulating the food supply so that all the ducks reached the required weight at the same time when they could be mass-marketed. The result was a new company, called Cherry Valley Farms, which became and remain the biggest duck-producers in Britain, even exporting breeding stock to China!
Joe’s shrewdness did not desert him when faced with a nasty situation after being accidentally shot on his grouse moor by a guest. He was rushed to hospital where he was shown the X-rays of his injuries. Not only was one side of his body heavily peppered by shot pellets which had to be removed but a grave-looking doctor warned him that he might have to undergo internal surgery because there were pellets in his gut. With customary presence of mind, he told the doctor ‘I do eat a lot of game so let’s leave it for a few hours’. Further X-rays then showed that, indeed, the gut pellets were en passage.

Compensation for gas work disruption in Hungerford could contribute to Hungerford’s Christmas lights, the mayor Cr Martin Crane suggested at Hungerford Town Council’s
last environmental and planning committee meeting. The committee was debating the fi nancial and manual approach
to this year’s lights. The meeting was told that the bulk of organisation had fallen on
Mr Rod Desmeules and that he had now left council.Total cost of the lights could be £30,000 which should be met
by the benefi ciaries, the town and traders. A number of traders had generously donated to the lights in the past but other had not done so.
There were concerns of health and safety guidelines. The committee will consult the council’s highways and transport
committee before making recommendations to the full council.
PROBLEMS OVER HUNGERFORD’S
CHRISTMAS LIGHTS
Hungerford Town Council’s environment and planning committee has approved West Berkshire Council’s proposal to extend scope of Hungerford canal footbridge
works on condition start and fi nish of the project are not delayed. Extended scope of the works comprise taking down a length of existing southern wingwall and replacing it with steps. This would facilitate footpath widening and better access for members of the public. The committee will also seek assurance that materials used are compatible with new and existing bridgework materials.
COMMITTEE APPROVES BRIDGEWORK

After carrying virtually all before them, Hungerford Bowls Club suffered several reversals last week. However the Kennet
League side still heads the Div 2 West Table and the KLX team are in third place behind the leaders Didcot and Hagbourne. After a poor start the Ashley Baker League side have now made signifi cant progress and sit comfortably in 4th position.
In the County Triples Ray Hutt, Paul Ratcliffe and Graham Austen have reached the Semi-fi nal. Glyn Harris, Ernie Hughes and Alan Bartter are now in the quarter-fi nal of the County Benevolent Triples. Flying the fl ag for the Ladies’ section, Jennifer Bartter has now progressed to the Final of the County Sec/Treas Singles Competition.
The Annual Open Mixed Pairs Tournament organised by the Ladies’ section proved to be a great success. Eventual winners were Liz Doling and Micky Lambourn of the host club with the runners up representing Wantage. For details of Membership please apply to John Conn on 01488 683584.

PLANNING REQUEST CLARIFICATION SOUGHT
A planning request by Mr T. Hunter of Hungerford Park Estate has been referred back to the West Berkshire planning offi cer for further information. The last meeting of Hungerford Town Council’s environment and planning committee considered an application to alter conditions. However, it was not clear what conditions were being referred to. Cr David Liddiard commented that referal back to West Berks could mean they would be old men by the time the answer arrived because the BBC had branded West Berks planning department the slowest in the land.
22.7.11
£600 FOR ROUND TABLE CARNIVAL
Hungerford Town Council’s environment and planning committee has recommended that £600 be made available to Hungerford Round Table for its Hungerford Carnival work. The last committee meeting was told there had been a misunderstanding and the money had not been earlier allocated. It was stressed that the council money should be used for the carnival and not to be passed on as a charitable donation.

HUNGERFORD WELCOME SIGNS
Hungerford Town Council’s highways and transport committee is considering appropriate working for the town’s six new road entrance signs. Antiques and history have been mentioned and the door is open for further suggestions.22.6.11
HUNGERFORD SET TO BLOOM
Hungerford is really set to bloom for HADCAF in July. There will be many new fl oral troughs and baskets in the
streets.Judges have been appointed for the various categories in the
Bloom competition and judging of the allotments will be on July 15.

HUNGERFORD CLEAN-UP SUGGESTIONSHungerford Town Council’s Recreation, Amenities and War Me-morials committee will seek clean-up work at the entrances to Hungerford, St Saviour’s area, the skatepark, Triangle Field sur-rounds and Bridge Street war memorial.
Just a quick up date following on from the Retailers Meeting last month.
Road Works – High Street still due to fi nish week ending 30th July (as per Wales & West yesterday), we will see! There are a further fi ve weeks of disruption to follow at the Southern end of the High Street, opposite Atherton Crescent, at some point. We are still awaiting a date on this and Nigel Perrin is keeping on top of this and as soon as this date is know it’ll be passed on.
Tourist Information – First the boards on the library, Jenny Booth has been doing a lot of work getting the details, contacts etc and a meeting is taking place on August 11th to attempt to get Hungerford information on them, so we’ll update you asap.
Anthony Buckwell will be Chairing a working party which is a joint venture between the Chamber of Commerce, Town Council and Town and Manor looking at improving tourist facilities’. However in the meantime the Chamber and Sugar Mouse have joined “forces” (must be a better word, but can’t think of it!) and will be providing a Tourist Information Point in Sugar Mouse. The space to accommodate this is being provided free of charge and the Chamber are providing and funding the display fi xtures and signage. So what we need now is as much information as possible to put there, if your a B&B/Hotel etc please do supply us with any advertising material you have (tourist will have access to the phone in Sugar Mouse to check vacancies etc). Basically any information that is Hungerford related is most welcome, if you can’t get down to the shop just let me know and I’ll collect the info’ later this week. It’s planned to have this up and running by the end of this week for the start of the main tourist season.
Welcome for Hero’s – Robert Johnston is currently on holiday, updates will follow asap.
Just for your info – for those that haven’t yet heard the planning application for the budget hotel has been granted on appeal – Ben Blake
