THE CHURCHMOUSE Windsor Presbyterian Church January 2019 Stewardship . . . What is a Stewardship Campaign? Well, some might say that it's a yearly campaign to extract money from our members. It does have that connotation, but stewardship is more than that. It's an act of affirmation, a spiritual discipline, to fulfill a command from God. Giving is a process. Fewer and fewer people are tithing, partly because there are so many other things to spend their money on. Happy people are not those who have the most stuff. Happy people are those who need the least amount of stuff to be happy. Stewardship is not about what the church needs, but more about our personal and spir- itual development. In Matthew 6:21 and in Luke 12:34, Jesus says, "Where your treas- ure is, there will your heart will be also." A tithe should be 10% of your gross income, before deductions. Church and charitable giv- ing should be part of your basic budget, not decided upon based on what's left over after all other wants and needs are met. It's about perspective. It should be an expres- sion of your faith and trust that the church is helping to carry out God's plan and mission here on earth from this corner. That faith and trust can be built up over time by being in- volved in the church by giving more than just money. As in past years, we are operating on a "faith" budget whereby you, the giver, decide, after prayerful consideration, how much you can afford to give to help continue Windsor's min- istry from this corner. Also, in addition to your financial commitment, you are encouraged to give of your time and talent as much as you can spare. Thus, the theme for our Steward- ship Campaign for 2019 is "All In." We all have some attribute or bit of expertise that we can offer that will help the church operate more efficiently. The more involved that all of our members become in our activities, the more we are able to help others that may not otherwise be helped. When you give willingly and sacrificially, you are giving of yourself and continually renewing your faith, opening yourself to God's response so that you can recognize God's role in your life. Stewardship . .

Stewardship is not about what the church needs, but more about our personal and spir-itual development. In Matthew 6:21 and in Luke 12:34, Jesus says, "Where your treas-ure is, there will your heart will be also."

A tithe should be 10% of your gross income, before deductions. Church and charitable giv-ing should be part of your basic budget, not decided upon based on what's left over after all other wants and needs are met.

It's about perspective. It should be an expres-sion of your faith and trust that the church is helping to carry out God's plan and mission here on earth from this corner. That faith and

trust can be built up over time by being in-volved in the church by giving more than just money.

As in past years, we are operating on a "faith" budget whereby you, the giver, decide, after prayerful consideration, how much you can afford to give to help continue Windsor's min-istry from this corner. Also, in addition to your financial commitment, you are encouraged to give of your time and talent as much as you can spare. Thus, the theme for our Steward-ship Campaign for 2019 is "All In." We all have some attribute or bit of expertise that we can offer that will help the church operate more efficiently. The more involved that all of our members become in our activities, the more we are able to help others that may not otherwise be helped.

When you give willingly and sacrificially, you are giving of yourself and continually renewing your faith, opening yourself to God's response so that you can recognize God's role in your life.

Learning & Serving - Linda Newsom

LEARNING

The adult Sunday School would love to have you join their group for study and spiritual growth in the new year on Sunday morning at 9 AM in fellow-ship hall. The coffee is always on!

Would you like to take a closer look at the week’s narrative lectionary scripture? Then join the bible study on Mondays at 9:30 AM with Pastor Shamaine and friends. This is a rare opportunity to discuss biblical is-sues with not only our own pastor, but other local biblical scholars and Windsor friends.

Our children help with the processing of the elements, and other special worship tasks every Sunday. Afterwards, they can sit with their family or make their own seasonal crafts at the craft table in the back of the sanc-tuary. Babies and toddlers can play in the soft area in the back of the sanctuary as well during worship. Michal King and Kaitlin Mogel take good care of our youngsters.

Windsor on Wednesday Windsor on Wednesday (WOW) is currently on sabbatical but will resume on January 16. We will be studying. WOW be-gins with a light supper at 5:15 followed by a worship and study session. It’s a great way to not only learn, but to make new friends and have some fellowship. If you can’t be there by 5:15 PM, come when you can. We have several folks that arrive late, so you won’t be the only one.

SERVING

The next opportunity to serve dinner at Children and Families Urban Movement (CFUM) at Trinity United Methodist Church downtown, is on Thursday, February 3. We would love to have you join us. We need volunteers at Windsor PC at noon that day to help

prepare the meal. We need donations of veggies, des-serts, and milk, or dollars to purchase the groceries. We need a six to ten hardy volunteers to help deliver the meal to Trinity United Methodist Church, help serve the meal, and do clean up after.

If you can’t make it on February 7, don’t worry. Mark your cal-endar for Thursday, March 7, and join us then, or for any one of the other meals we have scheduled throughout the year. Almost all our dinners are scheduled for the first Thursday in each month. Questions? See Jim or Linda Newsom or Jayne Owen.

Next CFUM Dates:

Feb. 7 March 7 April 4

Clive Community Services is looking for volunteers to work in their clothing room. Their team of volunteers sorts clothing dona-tions, hangs clothing, stages the clothing room, assists clients and more. On a heavy week, the cloth-ing room serves 50-80 families! If you would be interested in this very important ministry, please call 257-8550. The Volunteer Coordinator will return your call.

Eric Lawlor has been on our prayer list because he’s been having difficulty walking and other unexplained health issues. An MRI showed a benign, softball-sized brain tumor. He will undergo surgery this week. Please pray for peace and heal-ing miracles for Eric. Also pray for his surgeon and medical team, that God would guide them in wisdom and compassion. Lastly, please pray for strength and comfort for Pam and their children.

Judy Teig was released from the hospital on December 31. She currently is at Wes-ley Acres while she receives rehabilitation and then will return home.

Please pray for these members and their families, as well as for our shut-ins:

Epiphany Matthew 2:1-23 The Magi Visit

First Sunday after Epiphany Matthew 3:1-17 Jesus’ Baptism

Second Sunday after Epiphany Matthew 4:1-17 Tempted in the Wilderness

Third Sunday after Epiphany Matthew 5:1-20 Beatitudes Choir: Tumefurahi

Celebrating Epiphany

On January 6 the church celebrates Epiphany, the day that God incarnate in Jesus Christ was manifested to the Magi—the first revelation to the Gentiles. It’s a glorious feast day, but unfortunately, not a holiday that most Pres-byterians traditionally observe except in passing. In the Latino tradition though, El Dia de los Reyes—Three Kings Day—is a grand and festive occasion, and it has been for centuries. There are reenactments, music, spe-cial foods, parades and more.

Three Kings Day is rooted in the biblical story of the visit-ation of the Magi, where the Gospel of Matthew tells of wise men from the East following a star that signified the birth of a king. With them were gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to present to this king. Matthew’s text doesn’t give names for these wise men, nor the number of them. However, because of the biblical reference to the three gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh, legends often speak of three kings.

Reaching out to neighbors captures the spirit of the day. After all, the Magi were, according to the Christian tradi-tion, pilgrims “from the East” or “from the Orient” — as underscored by carols and hymns — whose devotion brought them to Bethlehem. Based on the Matthew narra-tive, Christian tradition has always stressed that Gentiles as well as Jews came to worship Jesus. Many non-Latin Presbyterians, while perhaps not celebrating Three Kings

Day, are familiar with Epiphany, which is from t h e G r e e k w o r d epiphaneia, meaning “manifestation,” and ob-serve the first revelation of Jesus Christ to the Gen-tiles, represented by the Magi.

Building & Grounds - Richard Ankeney

Winter is officially here, along with the snow and ice. The sidewalks and parking lots will be cleared as soon as possible after each snowfall. However, when snow is expected Saturday evening into Sunday morning, not all areas may be snow free before people arrive for worship.

Please leave the limited parking spaces in the main lot available to those who need to park closer to the doors. The sidewalk leading from the overflow lot south of University Avenue to the church will be cleared.

Ward Hall is taking a little longer to warm up, now that we’re down to one furnace for that part of the building. We’re raising the setting on the thermostat earlier in the day to make up the differ-ence.

The Christmas decorations will be taken down after Epiphany. Everyone is welcome to lend a hand.

December 13, 2018

Session met on December 13 with Elders JoAnn Hinschberger, Ron Grohe, Sue Cooper, Linda Newsom, and Richard Ankeney in attendance, along with Pastor Shamaine, Dwight Tomes, clerk, and Angie King, substitute clerk.

After the opening prayer, the reflection time centered around Christmas favorites: favorite carols, sights, sounds, smells, memories, traditions. Following a fun sharing conversation, it was emphasized that the beauty and wonder and peace of Christmas is made complete with family, friends, and church. Each of us must hold that magic in our hearts all year long.

The church membership roster is being updated.

The property sale hit a snag, but is back on track for completion after the first of the year.

As the budget is developed for 2019, we hope to showcase our mission and ministry through our spending priorities. Some budget categories may be realigned to better reflect what Windsor is actually doing. Again, if anyone has ideas for outreach, activities, and/or projects for next year, talk to the Elders so they can be discussed and incorporated into the budget.

Session passed a new business motion asking Pastor Shamaine to approach Elaina Steenson about helping to update our website, create a Facebook presence for us, and maintain both.

Next Session meeting is January 10.

Our annual meeting will be held on January 27.

The Operating Fund for November had a Net Loss of $800. Total Income ($11,230) was $1,100 under budget due to very little being transferred from the Capital Fund to the Operating Fund. Actual Expenses ($12,059) were $300 less than budgeted so that the loss is due to low-

ered income.

The Capital Fund had Net Income of $100 as Total In-come was $3,800 under budget and Total Expenses were $3,900 under budget. You might say that we had a rather underwhelming month.

The recipient for Local Mission giving has not been de-cided at this point in time.

Per capita

The per capita amount for 2019 is $45.00. Per capita is a set amount of money a congregation pays to the larger

Presbyterian Church (USA) on a yearly basis. It is based on the number of active members in each church. Every Presbyterian shares in the benefit of the PC(USA)’s min-istries, so every Presbyterian is asked to share the ex-penses associated with coordinating and performing the functions of that system. The amount is a combined re-quest from a congregation’s presbytery, synod, and the General Assembly, based on their respective budgets for the coming year. The breakdown of the per capita is:

General Assembly $ 8.95

Synod of Lakes & Prairies 5.40

Presbytery of Des Moines 30.65

Total $ 45.00

The Session invites you to designate payment to assist with our annual payment if you so desire.
