Principal’s Message Curriculum P-2- Welcome to week 6! In English the Year 1 and 2 children are starting their new unit of work where they will be looking at the generic structure of narrative pictures books. From this the students will write about an event in the story and give their opinion on if the character involved was correct. They will go on to relate this to a personal experience. The Prep students are continuing their exploration of many different types of texts, one of which they will chose to do an oral retell of in the last week of school. In maths, the children are doing lots of counting and learning about the importance of place value. We are looking at counting on and rainbow facts as a number fact strategy. Any extra practice you can do at home will always be beneficial with these strategies. Don’t forget you have access at home to the school provided internet programs of Reading Eggs and Mathletics. All the children need are their usernames and passwords which I can provide you with. Mrs Forrest Year 3-6 Welcome to week 6 of the school year. We are fully underway now and even starting some more assessment. Homework is now up and operating and we are seeking parent feedback around how you feel with the new format. All comments will be taken seriously and we value all feedback to the school. Students are encouraged to come and see an adult for help in the mornings before 8.45 or at lunch time to help them if they need it. We ask parents to sign to say your child has completed their homework during the week. Students are continuing to learn about narratives and persuasion in English, and have started learning about Chance and Financial Mathematics in Math. P&C The Leyburn SS P&C AGM will be held on the 6th of March. Take the time to join the P&C as they provide extra funds and support to the school to achieve a variety of outcomes. The P&C is one very important way you can voice your opinion within the school, as well as know and learn about the school initiatives, processes and direction. I look forward to welcoming all new and returning members on the 6th of March for the AGM and the general meeting that follows. QSR This year is a very important year for the school with our Quadrennial School Review (QSR). This will entail setting the direction and focus of the school for the next 4 years. The P&C is consulted heavily during this time and all community members are welcome to express their opinions, listen to ideas and the earning environment for your children. Attendance Our attendance for the first few weeks is at 91.3%. This is below the state target of 92%. This year the school will be focusing on student attendance, arriving at school on time and being prepared for learning. This is because every day counts for students to be at school. If you are struggling with your children attending school contact us to discuss solutions to the problems. Swimming Just a reminder that swimming will be held on Wednesdays and Fridays until the water / weather starts to turn cooler. Creating Successful Writers. Last week myself, Mr Brouwer, Mrs Grant and Mrs Casbolt attended professional development in Toowoomba. During this time we worked extensively in the areas of identifying changes of pedagogy to support and create places for students to achieve more success with their writing. The biggest item form the session was about consistency of message and language. This is at times hard when students are not aware of what a word means or they are unsure of the correct word to use. We call the metalanguage, and it allows teachers to talk to students about what they have done wrong and how to improve. We are focusing on the improvement of writing over this year, not just in neatness but in how sentences are structured, paragraphing, text structure, audience and punctuation. We make gains in each of these areas as we address each key learning area and the writing demands that they have. Make sure to discuss with your child that writing is very important as it is one form of

communication that is used widely, even in the digital age. Playgroup

Playgroup activities -Last Week the children learnt the letter C. The activity was finger painting. They enjoyed dipping their finger into orange paint. It was messy but a fun learning experience. Next the children will cut a small piece of pipe cleaner to create the carrot stem. This week we are learning the letter E. Parents if you have any art and craft ideas, please feel free to contact myself.

Please remember that the weather is heating up

and to wear protective clothing and bring your hat. New members are welcome to come and enjoy. Please bring morning tea for your children to have during their break. All community members are welcomed to attend playgroup. It is held each Wednesday from 9.00am – 11.00am. If you would like more information please contact the school office.

School Banking School banking will occur on a Thursday. Please place all banking in the school box in the office no later than 9.00am Thursday. Sam Gilmore Teaching Principal

Having the ability to complain or vent your concerns without repercussions is a valuable tool in communications, especially with our loved ones. How many times have you approached someone with a personal concern just to have them throw something back at you? Your original concern doesn’t get heard let alone addressed. The best way to have your needs met in this area is to set up a suitable time to share any issues or concerns. One person shares a particular point that is causing them to feel upset being careful not to “attack” the other. Then discuss strategies that could lead to a resolution or even a compromise. Both parties should have an opportunity to share in turn. Making a note of concerns as they happen is helpful so that you can remember them when you get together. Quotes: The first to apologise is the bravest. The first to forgive is the strongest. And the first to forget is the happiest. Reconciliation is more beautiful than victory V. Chamorro Communication, reconciliation and love brings peace. Finally….make peace not war.
