• “The Internet” was conceived by the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) of the U.S. Government in 1969 and was first known as ARPAnet.

• The original aim was to create a network that would allow computers at one university to “talk to” research computers at another university.

2. You need an ISP (Internet Service Provider) – allows the user to “dial-in” all available website domains.

E.g. Bell Sympatico, Rogers High Speed, etc.

Can be done in several ways:

Modem Connection (e.g. 56K)

LAN Connection (Shared Resources)

High-Speed Data Links (Cable or

Telephone)

1. Using HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) – programming code

2. Using a software program such as FrontPage, Flash, Dream weaver, etc.

3. Using a Template such as Geocities, Angelfire, Homestead, etc.

What’s in a Web AddressWhat’s in a Web AddressJust as we have a home address

so does a web site It is called a Uniform Resource

Page 11: The Internet A brief overview Internet - An interconnected system of networks that connects computers around the world via the TCP/IP protocol. What

URLURL The beginning of the URL contains the protocol.

This is usually “http” (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) or “ftp” (File Transfer Protocol).

The second section of the URL reveals the domain.

Directories follow the domain Lastly is the name of the document. (If no

document is named the browser will automatically open any document in the directory named “default” or “index.”
