Board Bits… by Tom McNamara
The YBYC board met on June 2, and these were a few
of the things on their agenda: The new chase/safety
boat training is going well, reports Joe Novello; and
more chase boat drivers are needed. Drivers are learn-
ing useful powerboat skills, which is important for sail-
ors; The Newport Marathon was very happy with the
clubhouse venue, and will likely use it again; B2B has
gathered 2 entries; A cruise to Yaquina Head is
planned for Sailstice; Hosts are needed for the July
and August monthly meetings; more discussion took
place on ways to increase club revenues, and ideas
from the membership are welcome. The board meets
again on July7.

Monthly Potluck/Meeting
Saturday June 20, 2015 The June 20th Member meeting will be hosted by Commodore Kelly and Amy. We’d like everyone to bring some type of seafood chowder for the potluck. Vegetarian entries are welcome also. We will not have formal judging this time, just a people’s choice award. Sal-
ad and Bread will be provided, so bring desserts if you want them. To celebrate Solstice, we are inviting Chandler Davis to lead a drum circle. Bring your drums or rattles. If you have any outdoor games for the grass area, bring those too!
Race and Cruise Report . . . By Greg Krutz ikowsky
Spring Series will finish up this month on the 17th and Summer Series will start on the 24th as the the seasons change. There will be a Fun Race on July 1 just before the 4th of July holiday with one of our Commodores in charge of the festivities. Don't forget to sign up for up for Committee Boat for Summer Series. We also have lots of opening for chase boat for those of you who prefer being upder power. Whatever your preference Wednesday evenings are a great time to get out on the water with your YBYC friends.
To mark the Summer Solstice which happens near mid-day here on Sunday June 21, we will have our Sailstice cruise outing to Yaquina Head, weather permitting. The outing to Yaquina Head starts about 9 AM and is a great opportunity to sail on the ocean with others. It is an informal outing with participation and exact timing up to individuals, but it's fun to keep in touch with the fleet by radio and know that other boats are out there with you. The Sailstice concept is to have sailboats on the water to celebrate the solstice and our now annual trip out to Yaquina Head is a fun way to do just that. Starting early allows for heading north when the winds are typically lighter this time of year, then heading back for what is hopefully a downwind sled ride home as the wind picks up.
This is a great time of year for boating, so come on out on the water!

Tuesday—Kids day a t the Floathouse Kids day at the Floathouse started the season off with nine children showing up to play on the
water. Three youth club members climbed aboard JY trainers and got to experience their very
first solo sail. Both the kids and their parents were grinning from ear to ear. Other kids played
on the water on Oregon Boating Foundation Kayaks and Joe’s El Toros.
The Oregon Boating Foundation Floathouse is open on Tuesday afternoons from 4:00 - 6:00
pm for any youth in the community to check out boats. Youngsters who are club members and
have gone through the appropriate programs may check out club boats including Kayaks, JY
Trainers, and 420 Sailboats. Youth club members as well as non club members may check out
a variety of boats including various row and sailing boats.
This program is successful due the large number of volunteers it takes to keep it going. With
the large number of kids enjoying this activity we really need more adult volunteers. If you
would like help support this activity please contact Joe Novello, [email protected] Help
is needed checking out boats, running the chase boat and skippering the keelboat.

YBYC Team Heads to the
Nat ional Hospice Regat ta By Giovanni Cata lano
YBYC team Catalano & Krutzikowsky heads to Rochester, NY and the Rochester Yacht
Club (RYC) to represent YBYC in the 2015 Hospice National Championship Regatta
June 11-14. Last year Greg and I were part of the team that represented YBYC as an
impact team in St. Petersburg, FL. We were first in the admirals fleet and had a great
time. This year our team will consist of Giovanni Catalano, Cortez Catalano, Greg
Krutzikowsky, and Ronan Krutzikowsky. Currently there are10 entries with half from
New York and YBYC being the only one from the west coast. The format from the no-
tice of race schedule is one practice day and three days of racing on Lake Ontario, host-
ed by the Rochester Yacht club. We will be sailing in Ideal 18's and Sonar 20's. As of
now, the forecast is temperature near 80 F
with a 50% chance of rain on the weekend,
lake temperature near 50 F, with the wind
forecast all over the place; mid to high teens
on Thursday, 4-11 mph with gusts to 14 mph
on Friday and 20mph with gusts to 32 mph
on the weekend! Looks like we need to be
ready for anything! Due to our busy family
schedules we were not able to practice much.
Either way, it will be a great trip and learning
experience for all.
This year we are being hosted at the home of
Tim Sladden and his wife. He is the 2014
champion, so hopefully we can sneak some
secrets out of him and take it all!!

This year the Columbus Day Regatta will be just that at YBYC. We did not get support
to organize the hospice component from the medical community as they are over-
worked and understaffed. That does not mean we still cannot do it! If people are in-
terested in organizing a fundraising regatta for hospice this year please let me know so
we can make it happen. We will need quite a bit of help, but it is for a great cause!!
