Christian Education
Sunday School began on September 18. Many thanks to our wonderful Sunday School teachers for
volunteering their time this year! If your child hasn’t been to Sunday School yet, it’s not too late! They are
welcome to join us anytime.
Where to go for Sunday School…
3 year olds through 3rd graders will gather in the Children’s Chapel for the Bible story of the day at the
beginning of each Sunday school hour. After story time, the children will be led by their teachers to their
classrooms for further exploration of the story, craft responses, and games. Class groups and room
assignments are as follows:
Preschool and Kindergarten—Day School Kindergarten Classroom
1st, 2nd and 3rd Grade—Day School Library
4th and 5th graders will meet in the Church Library from 9:00 – 9:50 a.m.
Middle School (6th through 8th Graders) will meet in the Vestry Room from 9:00 – 9:50 a.m.
Our High School class will be led by Carolyn Janowski and will meet twice a month in the Rector’s Office
from 9:00 – 9:50 a.m. Please join us!
EYC Kickoff Event—Join us on Sunday, October 9 from 5:30 to 7:30 in the Great Hall for our first EYC
event of the year. This year the EYC group will meet once or twice a month on Sunday evenings, typically
from 5:30 to 7:30. Please come and bring a friend!
Trunk-or-Treat at St. David’s on Sunday, October 30! Join us
during the Sunday School hour for a fun Trunk-or-Treat event.
Trunks filled with goodies will be set up around the building.
Sunday School classes will visit the trunks to collect candy and
treats.

We’re Celebrating a Birthday…

Music
Dear Friends,
I write this note with the music of our season-opening Evensong still ringing in my ears, including wonderful
music from as close to home as our own Composer-in-Residence, as far away as Iceland, and as ancient as a
twelfth-century chant by Hildegard von Bingen. It was a wonderful event with over eighty people in
attendance!
Though of course I’m a bit biased, I have to say I am thrilled about the musical offerings this year. On Sunday
mornings, the Choir of St. David’s will continue to provide some of the finest chamber vocal music in the
area, with repertoire drawn from throughout history and across the world. We’ll also continue an array of
volunteer musical offerings, including the St. David’s Singers, the Chorister Choir, the St. David’s Players,
and the Handbell Choir. If you’re interested in making a joyful noise, don’t be shy! Come speak with me after
a service, send me an email, or sign up online.
This year we are proud to share the music of emerging musicians with our Composer-in-Residence and
Ensemble-in-Residence programs. Our Composer-in-Residence, Michael Rickelton, will probably be known
to many of you. In addition to being a choral singer, Michael is an esteemed composer, with many awards,
performances, and commissions to his name. His choral works will be shared in liturgies throughout the year,
including a world premiere at the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols.
Our 2016-2017 Ensemble-in-Residence is the Argus Quartet, a young ensemble on the rise. Just in their
fourth season, they have already appeared at Carnegie Hall, the Amsterdam Muziekgebouw, and the Banff
International String Quartet Competition. Currently the Fellowship Quartet in Residence at the Yale School of
Music, their performances at St. David’s are a limited-time offer: after they finish this year at Yale, they’ll be
headed back to the West Coast. Don’t miss their incredible performances, the first of which will be on the
October 7 First Friday Concert at 7:30 pm.
In addition to the other upcoming events in the music series—including the October Evensong and Recital,
featuring Sungpil Kim, pianist, performing music of Schubert on Sunday October 16 at 4:30 pm and a very
special concert featuring the music of my and Michael Rickelton’s composition mentor, Michael Hersch on
Friday, November 4 at 7:30 pm—this month features a very special occasion: the birthday of the St. David’s
organ! Built in in 1966 by the Casavant Brothers firm, this instrument was dedicated fifty years ago to the day
on October 23. In celebration thereof, we’ll be celebrating a choral Morning Prayer service—much like the
service that would have been celebrated fifty years ago—replete with sung canticles and a special musical
“sermon,” Edward Bairstow’s festival anthem Blessed City, Heavenly Salem, which features the organ
prominently.
As always, you can find out more about the musical offerings at St. David’s—whether the week-to-week
Sundays in Song liturgy descriptions, the concert schedule, or recordings of past performances—at the
St. David’s website, as well as the Music at St. David’s Facebook page.
I look forward to singing with you!
- Doug Buchanan

Many of you have sent in reservations for altar flower memorials for the upcoming
program year, 2016-2017. The Flower Guild is grateful for your support, knowing
these remembrances are important to you and your family. We do have a number of
Sundays still open, however, and are hopeful more from the congregation will send
their reservation in! Long forgotten or misplaced is a letter from the Guild sent early in
the summer outlining the format for reservations. You can download the form by
going to our website (www.stdavidsrolandpark.com), clicking on the “Program” tab at the top of the page,
and selecting “Flower Guild.” Please consider re-visiting this vacation mail, and send in your support.
Thank you all for your consideration. Nettie Washburn - 410-377-7005.
