    23 July 2014 Edition

Rotary Club of Queanbeyan IncPO Box 155, Queanbeyan NSW 2620 http://www.facebook.com/QueanbeyanRotary [email protected]

District 9710 - Charter Date24 December 1951Meetings held on Wednesday, 6.15pm for a 6.30pm start at Best Western Central Motel, 11 Antill St, Queanbeyan

Presidents ReportIt is two week since I put pen to paper. July is a very busy month for us with our membership drive and theAlpaca for Polio day.

Two weeks ago we held the first Board meeting for the year where we set our fees for the 2014/15 year andreviewed our Constitution and By-Laws. Tim proposed a solution that not only ensures that our constitutionwill continue to meet the needs of the club while staying consistent with the Constitution and By-Laws ofRotary International. While there is still some work to do, Tims proposal received in-principle approval.

Natalie, Tim, Michael, Jasmin and myself manned out information table at Riverside Mall on Saturday 12th

July handing out invitations to our information night last week. Thanks to the great effort of everyone at themall and doing the letter box drops around Queanbeyan. We had a number of prospective new membersattend the information night.

Kristin, Natalie, Hayley (the President of the QHS Interact club), Tim and Grayce (ex Interactor andprospective new member) spoke about different part of Rotary and our club.

Thanks to Natalies efforts in organizing and promoting the Alpacas for Polio event, the day was a hugesuccess with over 50 people attending. The day raised over $400.00 for the fight against polio. Watch thesocial pages in the Queanbeyan Age as a photograph from The Age was there and took some photos. This isa great start to our fundraising for the year.

One of the great Rotary projects is the International Youth Exchange projects. Natalie and Andrew, inconjunction with Woden Daybreak have once again put their hand up to host an international student.Magdelena arrives on 2nd August and it would be good if a few of us could join with Natalie and Andrew inwelcoming Magdelena to Canberra.

I am happy to announce that Sarah Niall has agreed to become the new Interact Coordinator at theQueanbeyan High School. I look forward to meeting with Sarah in the near future.

Upcoming events include. This our guest speaker will be Heidi Flaherty. Heidi is the Marketing Manager of Riverside Plaza

and she has been a great help in the past with the allocation of spaces in the mall for the club to use.

Christmas in July markets on 27th July at the Q theatre, this is another great opportunity to promote

POLIOMYELITIS, WILD TYPE - EQUATORIAL GUINEA (03): WHO UPDATE*************************************************************A ProMED-mail post ProMED-mail is a program of the International Society for Infectious Diseases

Date: Thu 17 Jul 2014 Source: WHO Global Alert and Response (GAR), Disease Outbreak News [edited]

As of 16 Jul 2014, Equatorial Guinea has reported a total of 5 wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) cases, with

onset of paralysis between 28 Jan 2014 (1st case) and 3 May 2014 (most recent case). Genetic sequencingindicated that the cases are linked to the ongoing outbreak in Cameroon.

A national emergency action plan to respond to the polio outbreak was developed by the Ministry of Healthand polio partner agencies and is being implemented. Three nationwide campaigns with bivalent oral poliovaccine (bOPV) have already been conducted in the country -- 2 campaigns targeting children under 15years old in April 2014 and early May 2014, and one in late May 2014 targeting children under 5 years old.Two nationwide bOPV campaigns are planned for mid-July 2014 and mid-August 2014; the July 2014round will target the entire population, and the August 2014 round will target children under 15 years old.

As noted in the Disease Outbreak News update published on 25 Jun 2014, Brazil reported on 18 Jun 2014that WPV1 had been detected in a sewage sample collected in March 2014 at Viracopos InternationalAirport in Sao Paulo state, with genetic sequencing indicating that this virus is most closely related to thevirus currently circulating in Equatorial Guinea. No further samples have tested positive to date in Brazil, nor have any paralytic polio cases been detected there.

According to the International Health Regulations (IHR) Temporary Recommendations issued by theDirector-General of WHO on 5 May 2014, Equatorial Guinea is considered as a polio exporting country.

The country is therefore working to ensure that all residents and long-term visitors (of more than 4 weeks)who travel internationally receive a supplementary dose of polio vaccine between 4 weeks and 12 months

    prior to departure.--Communicated by:ProMED-EAFR

    FELLOWSHIP OF CRUISING ROTARIANS

I am hoping to establish a Fellowship of Cruising Rotarians, which will be a Facebook-based info kiosk for Rotarianswho enjoy cruising and those who'd like to find out more.

Before I can get the Fellowship off the ground, I need to have the names of interested Rotarians, including Rotariansfrom three countries.

As a way of gathering potential members it would be great if you could SHARE this.

If you're interested in being a member, please email me [email protected].
