Peer SupportNobodyunderstandswhatpeoplewithchronickidneydiseasearegoingthroughaswellaspeoplewhohavegonethroughtheexperiencethemselves.

TheKidneyPeerSupportserviceinvolveskidneypatientshelpingotherkidneypatientswhoarefacingsimilarsituations.Itaimstogiveshorttermpractical,emotionalandsocialsupporttopeoplewithchronickidneydisease,theirfamiliesorcarersbasedoncommonexperiences.PeerSupportoffersanopportunitytohaveaone-to-onechatandsharepersonalexperiencesandstorieseitherfacetofaceoroverthetelephonewithanexperiencedkidneypatientorcarer.

PeerSupportersareideallyindividualswhosharesimilarlifeexperiences,lifestylesandareapproximatelythesameage.However,itisnotalwayspossibletomatchpeopleinthisway,dependingonwhohasbeentrainedtobeaPeerSupporter,soyoumayfindthatsometimesyouareaskedtotalktosomeonewhohashadslightlydifferentexperiencestoyou.Oftenthesepeopleneedjustafriendlychat,butifyoufeeltheyneedspecificinformationthatyoucannotoffer,pleasecontactyourPeerSupportorganiser.

PeerSupportisintendedtocomplementthecareandeducationpatientsandcarersreceivefromtheirkidneyhealthcareteam.Itisthereforeanadditionalservicewhichisavailableifwanted.Itisnotasubstitutefortheprofessionalteamandyoushouldnotbeansweringqueriesbettersuitedtootherse.g.aboutmedication.
