Isabel

Isabel was born on April 22, 1451 in Madrigal of the High Towers. Daughter of Juan II and his second wife Isabel of Portugal.

When her father died, occupied the throne his step-brother Enrique IV. In the agreement of Toros de Guisando (1468), Enrique recognized Isabel as heiress and succesor of his kingdoms.

Fernando Fernando II of Aragon was

born on May 10, 1452, in Sos, Aragon. Son of Juan II the Big one and of Juana Enríquez, grew in the middle of a conflict, in which his father and his step-son Carlos were disputing his place in the throne. From very small he had political charges

How did they known? When Isabel was three years old, already

she was compromised by Fernando. But Enrique IV, six years later, he broke the marriage.

On September 18, 1468, Isabel was proclaimed A Princess of Asturias.

Juan II of Aragon tried to negotiate privately with Isabel the wedding with his son Fernando. Isabel thought that he was the best candidate for husband.

How did they know? Isabel was afraid that Enrique broke the

plans. In May, 1469, Isabel said to Enrique that she was going to the tomb of his brother, but really she was going to escape to see Fernando. On his part, Fernando, dressed of merchant and travelled to see Isabel.

After marrying (Isabel) Isabel acceded to the Castilian Wreath

After marrying (Fernando) For his part, Fernando II of

Aragon was replacing his father, Juan II, who had a civil war, in this case against the Generalitat of Catalonia. His marriage with Isabel was, at first, of convenience.

The conquest of Portugal

The Catholic Kings, to conquer Portugal, they used the matrimonial politics of systematical form as an instrument of the exterior politics. In 1490, they married their daughter Isabel with the prince Alfonso of Portugal, first-born son of the king Juan II.

The conquest of Granada

The second step consisted of conquer the kingdom of Granada, the only territory that was staying in Moslem hands. On January 2, 1492, the Catholic Kings were taking possession of the city of the Alhambra, after the surrender of Boabdil, from Granada king.

The expulsion of the Jews The year 1492, the expulsion of the Jews happened. The

Catholic Kings dictated a law. In it he was saying that the Jews had to leave the Peninsula, but they could remain if they were passed to Christianity

Discovery of America (1) After the rejection of Portugal, Colon went to

Castille, where the Catholic Kings gave the orders to form a commission to study the plans of Colon.

In 1492, after the conquer of Granada the capitulations of Santa Fe were signed.

In the capitulaciones of Santa Fe, Colon got the titles of Admiral and Virrey of lands and the tenth part of the benefits.

Discovery of America (2) The select ships were the Santa Maria, the Pinta

and the Niña. On August 3 they went out the expedition of the

Puerto de Palos and after they were one month in Canaries to effect repairs, on October 12 came to an island of the Bahamas, to which called San Salvador.

The Catholic Kings knew the Discovery and they negotiated with the Pope Alejandro VI the support for future trips.

Colon died in Valladolid in 1506. Last days of his life he dedicated to claim to the Catholic

Kings his titles.

Isabel's death

Isabel died in Medina of the Field on November 26, 1504. He was 53 years old and had occupied during 30 the throne of Castile (from 1474).

She died seriously sick, today it is supposed afflicted by a cancer of uterus.

Fernando continues conquering

Another peninsular kingdom where they put the eyes was Navarre, governed by Foix's French house. The annexation was after Isabel's death, when Fernando married with Germana de Foix, who gave to him the rights to take possession of the kingdom.

Fernando's death

Fernando died on January 23, 1516 in Madrigalejo (Caceres)

His throne was going to pass to his daughter Juana, but as they thought that Juana was mad, the throne was for his grandson.
